The Iron Rock’s journey from the depths of space ended with a thud in a dense pine forest about an hour north of Stockholm, around 10 o’clock on a November night four years ago.

In an unusual move, its trajectory was recorded on several cameras in the region used to track meteoroids. That led to a weeks-long hunt and an even longer trial over an unusual question: who owns an unearthly object that falls to Earth?

The lawsuit took a new twist Thursday when an appeals court ruled in favor of the landowner, overturning a decision that had sided with the two men who recovered the meteorite.

Days after the rock landed, Anders Zetterqvist, a geologist, found the spot where it first hit the ground. After several weeks of searching, his friend, Andreas Forsberg, a fellow geologist, found the 30-pound piece sticking out of the moss where it had rebounded, about 70 yards away.

“For me it was the find of a lifetime,” he says. “It was so spectacular. And to know that it was only a few weeks old.

Most meteoroids that reach Earth’s atmosphere burn up upon entry, leaving only a trail of light, called a meteor, in the sky. So-called fresh-fall meteorites are compared to old meteorites found in the ground. The meteorite north of Stockholm, made of iron, was the tenth meteorite found in Sweden and one of the few iron meteorites found in the world, Mr Forsberg said.

After a few weeks, the men took the stone to the Swedish Museum of Natural History, where it has been kept since 2020.

“We were afraid that hundreds of people from all over the world would show up looking for more,” Mr. Forsberg added. “Better and bigger pieces could leave the country before we knew it.”

Dan Holtstam, a senior researcher in the museum’s geosciences department, said, “It’s a textbook example of an iron meteorite.”

“Falls of iron meteorites are rare worldwide – this is the only observed fall of an iron meteorite in Sweden,” added Dr. Holtstam added. “In almost forty years in geosciences, it was the first time I had gotten my hands on a freshly fallen meteorite.”

In addition to their scientific value, meteorites are prized by collectors. On the global private collector market, such a person could fetch tens of thousands of dollars, said Dr. Holtstam.

About a week after the geologists made their find public, the owner of the property where the meteorite was found, Johan Benzelstierna von Engestrom, sent a letter to the museum claiming ownership.

The legal battle ensued.

Laws governing ownership of found meteorites vary from country to country. There are none in Sweden. In France and Morocco, by contrast, “the first person who gets their hands on it owns it,” said Dr. Holtstam. In Denmark they are owned by the state. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management outlines rules for meteorites that have fallen on public lands.

In December 2022, the The Uppsala court ruled in favor of the geologists, where the meteorite is considered movable property. “A newly fallen meteorite is not part of the terrain on which it landed,” the judge wrote in a statement.

Mr. Benzelstierna von Engestrom appealed. Thursday is the The appeal court in Stockholm ruled in favor of the landowner.

Judge Robert Green, one of four judges on the case, said the appeal court ruling concerned two questions: whether meteorites can be considered “real property” and the extent of a Swedish customary law known as “Allmansrätten”, which provides the right of public access.

The laws governing real estate – houses and land – are clear, the judge said.

“The premise with real estate is that the landowner has a right to it,” he said in an interview Friday. “But we don’t have a specific law regarding meteorites, which made this case special.”

Everyone’s rats gives everyone in Sweden the right to move in nature, including walking, cycling or camping, even on private property.

“That includes the right to take berries and even small stones from other people’s property,” Judge Green said.

Although the plaintiffs argued that the right to pick up small things could also include amber and more valuable objects, the judges ruled that because the meteorite was not made of materials foreign to the Earth, it should be considered part of the Earth . . So they decided it was real estate.

One judge disagreed, stating that while the meteorite should be considered real property, in this case common law also applied, and should be interpreted to include the right to remove a meteorite from private property to get.

“Allemansratt has far-reaching consequences for everyone, so it was interesting and important for us to try this,” Judge Green said.

The landowner, Mr. Benzelstierna von Engestrom, praised the ruling, saying in an interview: “I want to retain ownership of it, but give it on permanent loan to a Swedish museum.”

He did not specify which museum, but said he wanted the public to benefit from it.

The geologists have not yet decided whether to appeal to the Swedish Supreme Court.

Mr Forsberg said they were disappointed by the appeal decision.

“It’s very sad for me and my friend,” he said. “I have been passionate about collecting rocks and fossils all my life.” He added: “It’s sad for all the enthusiasts interested in finding new meteorites. If people think they won’t get a reward, how are we going to get people to search?”

Sweden has said it will discuss with NATO leaders plans to step up militarization of the island of Gotland, a 1,000-square-mile spit of land widely seen as the most strategic location in the Baltic Sea.

Described by analysts and commentators as a ‘gigantic aircraft carrier’, Stockholm-ruled Gotland lies just 200 kilometers off the coast of NATO’s Baltic triad of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, but also just 470 kilometers north of the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

The prime location offers enormous advantages in the deployment and control of air and sea traffic in the Baltic Sea, and is regularly cited by military analysts and commentators in the Russian media as a highly desirable target.

Sweden maintained a military presence on Gotland during the Cold War and at its peak the island housed some 25,000 troops, but in 2005 it was almost completely demilitarized.

With Sweden’s accession to NATO now complete, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the prospect of rearmament of Gotland was “an obvious topic to be discussed with our new NATO allies” as part of a broader increase in military preparedness in the Baltic Sea.

“Anything to do with the Baltic Sea is such an obvious candidate (for deploying military resources),” Kristersson told the FT in an interview earlier this week.

‘That applies in terms of presence on Gotland, but also in terms of surveillance, in terms of submarine capabilities.’

Russian military analyst and retired navy captain Vasily Dandykin told Russian news channel Sputnik that a remilitarization of Gotland would be seen as a major problem in the halls of the Kremlin.

‘The size of this island allows aviation, airfields and naval bases… (to serve) the dream of both the NATO bloc and the Americans to turn the Baltic Sea into a NATO sea… We understand what kind of threat is this,’ Dandykin said.

‘At least more intensively [Russian] exercises will take place in the Baltic Sea. We must understand that Finland is also already a member of NATO. Therefore, our actions will be adequate – both from Kaliningrad, where the Baltic Fleet is stationed, and from the rest of Russia.”

Sweden has not gone to war in more than two centuries and until recently had limited its military capabilities to such an extent that its population, so ill-prepared for the possibility of conflict, even developed a term for it: ‘fredsskadad’, or ‘fredsskadad’ . peace damaged’.

Sweden’s demilitarization of Gotland in 2005 raised concerns among NATO allies, especially the Baltic states that had only just joined the alliance a year earlier.

War planners have long struggled to figure out how to prevent these countries from being cut off from their allies if Russian land forces were to seize the 40-mile Suwalki Gap between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.

If the Kremlin were to also gain control of Gotland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania would remain sandwiched between the Russian mainland to the east, Kaliningrad to the west and yet another strategic location to the north.

NATO repeatedly urged Stockholm to recognize Gotland’s strategic importance, but the government continued its demilitarization and the Swedish armed forces effectively abandoned their “giant aircraft carrier.”

Fears for the Baltic states were justified in 2013 when Russia carried out a widely condemned military exercise in which two of Moscow’s Tu-22M3 nuclear bombers, along with an escort of Su-27 fighter jets, carried out dummy bombings, deploying their wings within a radius of only 38 kilometers from the nuclear bombers. Island.

This shock prompted Stockholm to restart a program of steady rearmament, but it was not until Russian tanks and fighter jets crossed the Ukrainian border on February 24, 2022 that the militarization of Gotland accelerated.

The invasion of Ukraine marked a turning point in Swedish foreign policy, prompting the government to abandon its two-century policy of military neutrality and non-alignment and to apply to join NATO.

Two years later, SwedenThe flag was raised at NATO headquarters in Brussels on Monday, cementing the Scandinavian country’s place as the security bloc’s 32nd member.

“Russia’s brutal, large-scale invasion of Ukraine united Sweden behind the conclusion that full NATO membership is the only reasonable choice,” Kristersson said.

Now the Scandinavian state appears fully aware of the Russian threat and has developed a well-trained and well-equipped military that boasts one of the most advanced submarine fleets in the world and a highly capable air force, with around 80 Gripen fighter jets.

Swedish armed forces are now also involved in the Nordic exercises of NATO’s massive military exercises, Steadfast Defender 2024, which will see around 90,000 troops take part in large-scale war games taking place from January to June.

‘We are modest, but also proud. We know that expectations are high for Sweden, but we also have high expectations for ourselves,” Kristersson told reporters earlier this week after his country’s accession to NATO.

“We will share burdens, responsibilities and risks with our allies.”

The country has been working closely with the security alliance during military exercises in recent years, even before joining.

Sweden also meets NATO’s defense spending target of 2% of gross domestic product.

Sweden’s entry into the security alliance last week came days after Germany’s defense minister said Putin’s military could launch an attack on allied countries within “five to eight years.”

Boris Pistorius said the US, UK and EU “hear threats from the Kremlin almost every day… so we have to take into account that Vladimir Putin could one day even attack a NATO country.”

Pistorius told German newspaper Der Tagesspiegel: “Our experts expect a period of five to eight years during which this could be possible.

“We must learn to live with danger again and prepare ourselves – militarily, socially and in the field of civil protection,” he concluded, pointing to an alarming speech by the Swedish Minister of Civil Defense earlier this year in which he called on citizens to prepare. for the prospect of war.

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas believes a confrontation between Russia and NATO is even more threatening, giving Europe just three to five years to prepare for a serious military threat on the alliance’s eastern flank.

And Admiral Rob Bauer, the chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, urged both citizens and governments to prepare for cataclysmic conflict and the chilling prospect of conscription.

‘We must realize that it cannot be taken for granted that we will have peace. And that’s why we [NATO forces] have the plans, that is why we are preparing for a conflict with Russia,” Bauer told reporters after a recent meeting of NATO defense chiefs in Brussels.

‘But the discussion is much broader. It is also the industrial base and also the people who need to understand that they have a role to play.”

Canada and Sweden are resuming funding for the main United Nations agency supporting Palestinian refugees in Gaza, citing the widening humanitarian catastrophe there and saying the agency has taken steps to improve accountability amid allegations that some of its employees had ties to Hamas.

The countries were among more than a dozen that suspended payments to the aid group United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, known as UNRWA, following accusations in January by Israel that a dozen of its 13,000 employees in Gaza had been involved in the acts of terrorism. October 7 Hamas-led attacks on Israel or their aftermath.

Israel’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it was “a serious mistake” by the two countries to restart funding for the UN agency. “It constitutes tacit consent and encouragement on the part of the governments of Canada and Sweden to continue to ignore the involvement of UNRWA employees in terrorist activities,” the statement said.

UNRWA has argued that Israel has attacked the country with a “deliberate and coordinated campaign” to undermine its operations when its services are most needed. Warnings of widespread hunger bordering on famine have become more urgent, and signs of desperation are increasing as people resort to consuming livestock feed or ambushing aid trucks.

In a government statement on Saturday, Sweden said it would make a conditional first payment of about $20 million. It said UNRWA had agreed to allow independent audits and strengthen internal oversight.

“In this urgent situation, where the need among the civilian population is so great, it is first and foremost important to save lives,” the statement said.

Canadian officials said Friday that they had received an interim report from the United Nations internal agency investigating the claims, and that the agency had taken immediate steps to improve accountability. The United Nations has also ordered an external investigation.

The European Union, one of UNRWA’s biggest donors, announced last week that it would substantially increase funding for the organization, saying Palestinians faced terrible conditions and should not pay for Hamas’ crimes. The first tranche of 50 million euros, about $54 million, was due to be paid this week.

The United States has said it will wait for the results of a U.N. investigation before deciding whether to resume donations. The United States is the agency’s largest donor, pledging $344 million in 2022.

Canadian officials said UNRWA plays a “critical role” in providing humanitarian assistance to Gaza’s 2.2 million citizens, and that other organizations relied on the long-standing organization’s expertise and infrastructure.

The international community is under increasing pressure to take action to alleviate the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza. UNRWA officials have said that without a reversal of donor countries’ suspensions, which cost the organization some $450 million in funding, the organization would soon run out of reserves.

The United States and other countries announced plans this week to try to get aid by sea to northern Gaza via the Mediterranean coast. In recent weeks, countries have sent aid via airdrops attached to parachutes.

Israel has claimed that at least 10 percent of UNRWA staff in Gaza have ties to Palestinian armed groups and that employees’ ties to Hamas fundamentally endanger the organization. In a proposal for Gaza’s post-war governance, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel last month included a call to close UNRWA and replace it “with responsible international aid organizations.”

Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, said this week that he had received no additional information supporting Israel’s allegations after they were initially presented to him in January, but that the agency had immediately terminated the contracts of staff members accused of involvement in the October 10th. 7 attacks due to the seriousness of the accusation.

Aaron Bokserman contributed reporting from Jerusalem.

Sweden formally joined NATO on Thursday, becoming its 32nd member, two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine forced both Sweden and Finland to put aside their traditional military non-alignment and seek the collective security of the American-led alliance.

After months of uncertainty caused by the hesitations of Turkey and Hungary, Sweden officially joined by filing its legal paperwork – its instrument for joining the North Atlantic Treaty – with the US State Department in Washington.

At a brief ceremony in Washington, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken received the documents from Ulf Kristersson, the Swedish prime minister, and said: “Good things come to those who wait.” Mr Blinken said “everything changed” after the Russian invasion. “Swedes realized something very profound: that if Putin was willing to try to erase one neighboring country from the map, he might not stop there.”

Mr Blinken said Sweden’s membership is a clear example “of the strategic debacle that Ukraine has become for Russia”, adding: “Everything Putin tried to prevent, he has actually accelerated through his actions, through his aggression .”

Mr Kristersson said that “today is a truly historic day.” Sweden, he said, “will defend freedom together with the countries closest to us – in terms of geography, culture and values.” He pledged that Sweden, which largely dismantled its ground forces after 1989 but has retained a powerful air force and navy, would soon reach NATO’s goal of spending 2 percent of gross domestic product on the military.

NATO plans a Swedish flag-raising ceremony on Monday at its headquarters in Brussels, as well as at NATO commands across Europe and North America.

Jens Stoltenberg, NATO Secretary General, called it “a historic day.” In a statement, he said that “Sweden will now take its rightful place at the NATO table, with an equal voice in shaping NATO policies and decisions. After more than 200 years of non-alignment, Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5, the ultimate guarantee of the freedom and security of its allies.”

Sweden, he continued, “makes NATO stronger, Sweden more secure and the entire alliance more secure.”

The Russian government has said it will now take unspecified measures to strengthen its own defenses against the newly expanded NATO, which, with Sweden and Finland, has a much longer land border with Russia than before.

Five Europeans have died in an outbreak of avian chlamydia that has spooked health chiefs.

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an urgent warning about an ‘unusual’ increase in the number of people developing psittacosis in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden.

The flu-like illness, nicknamed parrot fever, is caused by a type of chlamydia common in birds.

It is different from the species responsible for the human STD and is not spread sexually.

Psittacosis usually causes mild symptoms such as headache and coughing. Still, in severe cases it can lead to severe pneumonia and meningitis.

Officials from the World Health Organization (WHO) have issued an urgent warning about an ‘unusual’ rise in the number of people developing psittacosis in Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Denmark and Sweden. The flu-like illness, nicknamed parrot fever, is caused by a type of chlamydia common in birds. In Britain, parakeets, the only wild parrot species in Britain and a popular pet, may pose a particular threat due to their large numbers across the country.

The latest figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show that there have been four laboratory-confirmed cases of psittacosis in England in 2023

It can be especially problematic for the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Surveillance data shows that rates of psittacosis, also called ornithosis, in Austria are up to seven times higher than expected.

The WHO said: ‘Although birds carrying this disease could cross international borders, there is currently no evidence that this disease is spread nationally or internationally by humans.

‘Generally speaking, people do not spread the bacteria that causes psittacosis to other people, so the chance of further transmission of the disease from person to person is small.

‘If the correct diagnosis is made, this pathogen can be treated with antibiotics.’

WHAT IS PARROT COAST?

Psittacosis – better known as parrot fever – is primarily an infection in birds, but can cause pneumonia and other serious health problems in humans.

Human infection is usually due to exposure to infected pet birds, such as cockatiels, parakeets, other members of the parrot family and pigeons.

Flu-like symptoms of the infection include fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

These will normally appear within 5 to 14 days after exposure to the bacteria.

Sick birds may show signs of poor appetite, inflamed eyes, breathing difficulties and diarrhea.

Although the disease can often be mild or moderate in humans, it can be serious, especially if left untreated in the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Pregnant women are also particularly at risk.

The bacteria is known to have affected Britons. The latest available figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show four laboratory-confirmed cases in England in 2023.

Officials have urged pet owners, who are most at risk, to keep cages clean and avoid overcrowding.

Workers who have regular contact with potentially infected birds, such as pet store employees and veterinarians, should also maintain good hand hygiene, the WHO said.

Infected birds do not always show signs of illness. Sick birds may have no appetite, inflamed eyes, breathing difficulties and diarrhea.

Parrot fever is a respiratory disease caused by the bacterium Chlamydophila psittaci.

The bug can infect people who are exposed to infected birds, especially parrots, parakeets, budgerigars and cockatiels.

Pigeons, pigeons, ducks, turkeys and chickens can also be infected.

Infection usually occurs by inhaling airborne bacteria from bird droppings, feather dust, or respiratory secretions.

Human-to-human transmission is possible, but rare, studies show.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there is no evidence that the bacteria is spread by preparing or eating poultry.

In most recent cases, people had been exposed to domesticated or wild birds that were infected, the WHO said.

Denmark, where around two dozen human cases of psittacosis occur each year, has recorded 23 cases since the end of 2023, including four deaths.

However, officials suspect the number of cases is much higher.

One got parrot fever from a pet bird. Of the remaining 15 for which exposure information was available, 12 had contact with wild birds.

Three had no history whatsoever with the animals.

Another fatal accident was recorded in the Netherlands, where twice as many cases were registered as in previous years.

Of the three other countries under the WHO flag, Austria recorded fourteen confirmed cases in 2023. Normally the country only sees two per year.

The latest figures from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) show four laboratory-confirmed cases of psittacosis in England in 2023.

In Britain, parakeets, the only wild parrot species in Britain and a popular pet, may pose a particular threat due to their large numbers across the country.

Scientists have long been concerned about rising numbers of rose-ringed parakeets, which are largely concentrated in suburban areas, especially in gardens and parks in England’s leafy south-east.

The very first quads of a rare breed of ‘blacknose’ lambs have been born in Britain.

Adorable photos show the four Valais Blacknose youngsters who arrived at Whitehall Farm in Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

The boys Livramento and Larry, and the girls Lotus and Lily, were born to mother Grace three weeks ago and have been winning hearts on the farm ever since.

Emily Duncan, who runs the farm with her husband, said: ‘As far as I know these are the first quad bikes ever born in Britain, it’s very unusual.

‘They get a lot of attention! Only one set was born in Germany and one in Sweden.

Above are three-week-old quad Wallis Blacknose lambs, the very first quads of the rare breed born in Britain

‘The Valais Blacknose sheep came to Britain from Switzerland, from the Valais region, in 2015 – hence their name.

“We got them late that year, so very early.”

Emily explains that it’s not just the color of the species that makes them stand out, but also their friendly nature.

She said: ‘The species are quite rare so look different – but they are also exceptionally friendly sheep, which is another reason why people love them so much.

‘So much so that when one was eating lambs, all the others were cooing and nibbling at my feet.

‘They’re all following me, it’s a bit tiring! When the species came to us in 2015, people came from all over the world to see them.

“There was even a busload from Hawaii!”

Whitehall Farm is also home to 500 other sheep, as well as Aberdeen Angus and Belted Galloway cows, horses, chickens and dogs.

This comes after the Mail revealed how Black-nose sheep are in high demand as pets.

Rarely seen outside their native Switzerland and often referred to as the cutest sheep in the world, the Valais blacknose breed are worth up to £10,000 each – 40 times the value of an ordinary lamb.

These three are the latest additions to the flock on a farm in north Devon where the lambing season is in full swing.

In Switzerland, which banned exports nine years ago, sheep are bred for both wool and meat.

In Britain, where there are probably only a few thousand, they are kept as pets, for breeding and for show.

In 2020 we reported that they typically sell for up to £7,000, but the most attractive rams can fetch £10,000.
