Skinny jeans and a tight silhouette when it comes to trousers are usually the norm for celebrities. But that has slowly changed in recent years. The relaxed fit is making a comeback, just like the baggy jeans that give your legs some room to breathe.

Jennifer Lopez used to be spotted recently at a Lakers game with her family, wearing wide-leg Gucci jeans, a sequin blouse and bejeweled Gucci boots with a pair of Bottega Veneta sunglasses. It was a look that was just as over-the-top as JLo’s This is me now movie, and so typical of her, we knew we had to remake it. That’s why we add this pair of HDLTE wide leg jeans to our Amazon shopping cart now!

Amazon

To get HDLTE wide leg jeans for only $38 at Amazon! Please note: Prices are correct at date of publication, March 19, 2024, but are subject to change.

It’s safe to say that Jennifer’s Gucci jeans cost a lot more than the modest $38 you can buy this lookalike pair for on Amazon. This is a more affordable option that looks exactly like the pleated wide-leg look that the actress and singer wore to the basketball game. They’re nice and stiff without too much elasticity or give, and flare out at the ends of each leg, just like Jen’s.

They are super loose, with a high waist, wide, straight legs and five pockets to keep all your belongings with you. They also come in 15 different colors if traditional blue jeans don’t fit well with your wardrobe. These relaxed jeans go with everything you have in your closet, and give your legs some rest like a pair of slim-fitting skinny jeans.

Leggings are fun, but if you’ve ever worn palazzo pants, you know exactly how much more fun they can be. They are similar to wearing regular pants, only swisher. You can move in them like a skirt, you get better airflow, and you can almost treat them like a skirt when deciding what to wear that day. They almost look like this, so you can get away with treating them as if they were just a maxi skirt.

If you’ve ever thought about buying a pair but haven’t made that idea a reality yet, now is a great time to do so thanks to a sale at Walmart. At this point you can use the Somer Palazzo wide leg trousers for just $19. That’s an excellent deal considering they’re down to $19 from the previous price of $36.

These casual, loose, high-waisted pants are light, comfortable and perfect to wear for any occasion. Whether you want to wear them with your favorite T-shirt or blouse, they give you a stylish look from head to toe. They even make great beachwear to cover up your swimsuit when you go on vacation.

Your palazzo pants give you a lot of dynamic freedom of movement as you walk, making you look beautiful and regal even if you decide to wear a plain white tank top or halter top with your new wardrobe staple. But whatever you do, act quickly. These pants will sell out quickly and are currently on clearance, so there’s a good chance they won’t be coming back. Make sure you get a pair (or two) if you don’t want to miss out on this excellent value as they are all still very readily available.

The most important news for spring/summer 2024 is that 'real' clothing dominates the agenda. This might make you wonder what we've been wearing all these years if it's not real clothes, but 'real' is fashion-speak for everyday wear – the kind of uncomplicated clothes that make your life easier.

Yes, the catwalk featured trousers and micro shorts, and fringed skirts, and long, flowy white dresses, but above all the message was This Works For Real Life. This blazer, these trousers, this shirt: they've worked before, so we did more in the same way and made them even more attractive.

Does this mean we automatically look good in all the major trends for spring? Not quite.

As always, we have to choose carefully whether we want to get the most out of our clothes, and being over 50 not only means that you look good in your clothes, but also that you look good for your age. Attracting attention would be nice, but we'll settle for shaving six to eight years off our biological number.

We're not talking about plastic surgery. This is about choosing a wardrobe that makes you look contemporary without trying too hard: fresher, brighter and more familiar.

A wardrobe that is years away from your age is the holy grail of the woman over 50 – and it starts with capitalizing on the trends that score high on the 'good for your age' rating…

VEST

Recycled wool cardigan, now £83, and leather skirt, £429, baukjen.com

The classic, neat and tidy crew neck cardigan, worn slightly unbuttoned with nothing underneath or a glimpse of something lace trimmed in the neckline, is a going out option for any age.

It's more flattering than a plain crew-neck sweater (which your daughter might wear with a nice skirt). Make the cardigan black, add a midi skirt or smart trousers, some gold and pearls or statement earrings.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: A wide cardigan with a shirt underneath.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A bare collarbone draped with a single chain.

Or opt for a long cardigan with four pockets, unbuttoned from the waistband.

GATE PULL

The everyday floral dress has taken a back seat for the time being, and a midi pencil skirt or A-line skirt with a neat top are the new alternatives.

For evening, the new option is a simple top (perhaps a cashmere T-shirt with three-quarter sleeves) and a nice A-line skirt.

WHAT IS BECOMING OBSOLETE… A skirt with a high slit.

TAKE YEARS WITH: A skirt with boots or kitten heels. Stick to dark colors for now.

GLOSSY AND SPARKLING

Striped cotton shirt with embroidery, £190, Essentiel Antwerp

Striped cotton shirt with embroidery, £190, Essentiel Antwerp

At Prada there were fireworks bursts of rhinestones embroidered on black dresses and silver eyelets on fringed skirts. Sequins, metallic, lamé and rhinestone embroidery were in abundance on the spring/summer catwalks, and while you should always say no to a Bacofoil trouser suit, an element of shine in an outfit looks modern and has striking benefits for the over-50s.

A narrow sequin stripe on a skirt, or a few rhinestones on a top, make those minimal 'real' clothes look more decorative and festive.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Shiny sequins from head to toe.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A sparkling detail on a skirt, or gold or silver shoes.

GOOD JEANS

High-waisted wide leg jeans, £168, thereformation.com

Seam detail, wide leg jeans, £99, mintvelvet.com

L-R: High-waisted wide leg jeans, £168, thereformation.com; Seam detail, wide leg jeans, £99, mintvelvet.com

By 'good' jeans we don't just mean weekend jeans or favorite jeans, but also jeans that will look good at the office or after work at a friend's birthday dinner. For jeans to be good (not just good enough), they need to be a dark wash, fitted and on-trend, which means mid to high rise and relaxed at the leg, but still sharp and not sloppy. The new style in town is cargo jeans, but why complicate things when you can make a straight leg or a flared A-line your two best options?

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Your old bootcut or skinny jeans.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… Straight and long jeans worn with boots. Or wear wide-leg jeans, like a long skirt, with a nice white tuxedo jacket.

COLOR FROM HEAD TO TOE

Paneled midi dress, £250, meandem.com

Paneled midi dress, £250, meandem.com

Wearing one color, or tonal color (shades of one shade), is easy and smart, but doubling down on shades of camel, white or gray while Spring 2024 won't do much for older skin tones.

Khaki works well in tonal shades, as do all blues and pinks, and designers loved red this season.

Red from head to toe can look beautiful, but an accent (a cardigan around the neck of your shirt) works just as well.

White coats and dresses designed to be worn together are already in stores, but if you're heading that way, look for off-white shades and cream as well.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Black from head to toe.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A statement red dress (the flowers are a thing of the past), but it doesn't match your shoe.

A LITTLE PURE

Sheer panel skirt, £98, anthropologie.com

Sheer panel skirt, £98, anthropologie.com

Pure is not the word women over 50 want to hear when it comes to clothing. But when pure is as important as it is this spring, it's worth taking a closer look, because a little bit in the mix makes the difference between watching and not watching.

The sheer (nude) skirt is the big news — so for us that means covered on top, lighter from the waist down (what they call “business on top, party underneath”).

We won't be wearing a sheer skirt anytime soon, but we might wear a silky skirt, a skirt with a mesh hemline or a discreet sheer insert on a blouse.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Underwear on display.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A transparent hem under a jacket, or a transparent hem under a cardigan.

THE BOOT

Kitten heel leather boots, £200, dunelondon.com

Kitten heel leather boots, £200, dunelondon.com

Boots are made for every age, and with their cover-up potential and the look of '70s chic, they're the perfect solution to wear with skirts to look like an uptown woman rather than a mom.

Black always works, at least until the weather gets warm. Brown is also a good option. Make sure heels are walkable and won't ruin your wooden floor.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Very high heels.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A block or kitten heel – and try a longer boot with cropped trousers.

THE POLO SHIRT

Merino-blend jumper, £75, boden.co.uk

Merino-blend jumper, £75, boden.co.uk

As long as it's not clingy, not baggy and not striped like a rugby shirt, the posh boy's signature shirt will be as useful this spring as a polo collar is in winter. Whether you wear it buttoned up under a blazer and tucked into wide-leg trousers, or open with a midi skirt under a trench, this is a simple and sleek way to inject the crucial zipper of sportiness that defines the tailoring of this season a modern touch — and it's a lot simpler than the other sporty top out there: a plain cardigan. The best ones have sleeves that end just below your elbow.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Polo shirts with the collars up.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… Solid colored polo shirts made of fine woolen knit. Avoid navy blue and white (too school gym).

TROUSERS HEIGHT

Shirt, £199, and wide leg trousers, £199, lkbennett.com

Shirt, £199, and wide leg trousers, £199, lkbennett.com

If you missed the memo, here it is again: Pants are no longer skinny or tight. They can be straight and looser in the leg, or wide and roomy. Anyway, the waistband rises slightly.

For the avid fashion lover, this means ribbed cuffs, and for us it means loose, flowy, fitted pants that cover your belly button. Try it before you flinch. They can be amazingly slimming and leg lengthening if you add a little heel, and there's no escaping the new silhouette.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Wearing narrow, tight tailoring.

TAKE YEARS WITH: High-waisted trousers with half a shirt tail in them. A classic pinstripe in an extra wide cut feels right on trend, so start here.

BUSINESS CHIC

Trench, £149, blazer, £125, and wide leg trousers, £85, johnlewis.com

Trench, £149, blazer, £125, and wide leg trousers, £85, johnlewis.com

We no longer feel like having a special work wardrobe. But then again, simple classic tailoring is a grown woman's best friend.

The core of the company is there to bridge the gap: it's office wear as you've always known it – blazers, shirts, trousers and pencil skirts – but comfortable, feminine and good enough to wear.

The key to the core of the business is clothes that you probably already have and that just need a little adjustment to be ready for spring.

Keep your slightly oversized blazer (for oversize read generous rather than really big – that's for the young adults) and wear it with high-waisted trousers or smart jeans and a belt.

The boyfriend shirt is still popular, but buy it in dazzling sky blue or a pink stripe instead of fashionable cool white, and tuck it in halfway; don't leave it loose and flowing as it was styled on the catwalks; sloppy doesn't do those of us who remember the grunge of the eighties any favors at all.

A cargo-style pencil skirt with an edge-to-edge jacket with a round collar or a button-up cardigan is the new smart-casual skirt suit.

If you love a trench coat, now is the time to dive in and make it last.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: A tight-fitting black pantsuit

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… A blazer, shirt and trousers/skirt in tonal colours. Smart belts are an instant lift in the city.

THE SHOE

Slingbacks, £35.99, zara.com

Slingbacks, £35.99, zara.com

The good news for adults is that the classic leg-extension pumps are back in all sizes, and you can wear them to work or use them to spice up an outfit in bright red or shocking pink satin. Low heel mules are also a big trend, but are tricky. If you want a dress up shoe, you're better off buying a reliable slingback. Say no to boat shoes, even if they were on the Miu Miu catwalk, and to Mary Janes – there are many, but they make you look anything but young.

WHAT IS OUTDATING: Nude high heels.

TAKE YEARS OFF WITH… Walkable slingbacks or a pair of suede, colored sneakers.

  • Australian man admitted using batteries for 'sexual gratification'
  • He revealed that he had never had any problems removing batteries in the past

A man lost part of his penis after inserting three 1cm wide button batteries into his urethra.

The unnamed 73-year-old, from Australia, waited 24 hours before seeking medical attention.

He admitted to medics that he used the batteries for “self-gratification” and that he had never had problems removing objects in the past.

Doctors shared eye-opening details of the incident in a medical journal, telling how failed attempts to fish out the 1.3cm wide batteries only pushed them deeper into his urethra.

Button batteries release a corrosive liquid if left in the body, which can burn through tissue and blood vessels within hours, causing serious internal damage and bleeding that can be fatal.

Doctors who examined the man found that the opening of his urethra was stained black, while surgery later revealed that necrosis had occurred.

The incontinent 73-year-old, whose name was not given, waited 24 hours before seeking medical attention. He later admitted to medics that he used the batteries for 'self-gratification' and that he had never had any problems removing them in the past.

During the operation, medics then returned his foreskin to its original position after it had been trapped by the batteries, creating a tight band of contracting tissue. They used tweezers to remove the batteries individually and noted that he had suffered

During the operation, medics then returned his foreskin to its original position after it had been trapped by the batteries, creating a tight band of contracting tissue. They used tweezers to remove the batteries individually and noted that he had suffered “extensive” burns on the outside of his penis. The photo shows an example of button batteries sold

Medics at Western Health Footscray Hospital in Melbourne who treated him said he arrived at A&E in pain and felt he could not empty his bladder properly.

Doctors tried to grab the trio of batteries using tweezers, a tongue-like medical device and other tools.

But register Urological case reportsthey said the patient “had difficulty tolerating the procedure and it was abandoned.”

They then operated on the man while he was under general anesthesia and successfully removed the batteries using tweezers.

What sounds? And why can it be dangerous?

Clutching is when men insert objects into the opening of the penis to increase their sexual pleasure.

These usually involve specially designed tools made of glass or metal.

Doctors at the International Andrology London clinic said there has been a 'dramatic increase' in the number of men experiencing urethral problems as a result of it sounding like men want to 'increase their sexual activities and improve their sexual experiences'.

Men interested in the practice should understand the risks and purchase equipment from reputable companies and ensure they do so hygienically.

But they warned that the practice can damage the sensitive tissue in the urethral route, causing the release of urine and semen.

It can also lead to a lack of bladder control and infection.

And the penis and urethra may even need surgery or implants to rebuild sensitive tissue.

Source: International Andrology London

Each of the batteries was covered in a “black tar-like material” and the man's urethra had suffered “extensive” burns, they wrote.

He was given antibiotics for two weeks and was discharged after three days as he recovered well from the surgery.

However, when he returned to the hospital ten days later complaining of a swollen penis and discharge from his urethra, doctors rushed him into another operation.

They cut into his penis, which led to a 'large amount' of pus oozing out and revealing he had an 8cm piece of dead tissue in his shaft, which was removed by medics, along with part of his urethra.

The man, who had suffered from erectile dysfunction for three years, was also fitted with a semi-permanent catheter to help him urinate due to his injuries.

A follow-up appointment two weeks later revealed that it had healed as expected and his catheter was removed and replaced with a suprapubic catheter.

This is a semi-permanent device that is replaced every four to twelve weeks. Instead of being inserted through the urethra, the catheter is inserted through a hole in the abdomen and then directly into the bladder.

He was advised against complete penis reconstruction, which doctors said would take nine months, 'given the complexity of his injury'.

Doctors wrote in the diary that they believe it is the first case involving batteries and removal of the urethra.

Battery insertion is “very harmful” and requires “clinical urgency,” she added, given the risk of battery acid discharge into the urethra.

When discussing the issue of urethral insertion in general, they noted that most cases involve objects such as wires, bones, cutlery, thermometers and even worms.

But there is no typical care protocol for dealing with 'foreign bodies in the urethra'.

Workwear can be tricky to navigate at the best of times as we recycle the same basic sweaters and office clothes.

Noble-eyed shoppers have found the perfect way to update their work wardrobe with wide-leg trousers from H&M.

The classic style pants exude a great, calm, luxurious vibe, with the high waist and straight leg pleat making them look more expensive than everyday.

There's plenty to love about these workwear staples, as they also feature a hidden hook-and-eye closure that makes them look extra stylish even on days off.

However, unlike other classic trousers, you don't have to worry about taking them to the dry cleaners as these office clothes are made from a durable and washable polyester blend.

If you weren't already sold, these gorgeous pants come in nine different shades (yes, you read that right), so there's bound to be something to match your wardrobe.

For those looking for a more classic look, you can choose from black, white, navy blue or brown, with these colors giving quite a luxurious look.

Alternatively, you can indulge your girly side with the lilac version, which is sure to turn heads next one time when you enter the office.

With so many colors to choose from, it's no surprise that these wide leg trousers are a hit with shoppers – who have given them an impressive 4.3 star rating online.

More than 1,600 shoppers have purchased a pair, with many saying they are 'obsessed' with the fit.

This includes one reviewer, who wrote: “OBSESSED with this. I loved them and was sad that 10 were out of stock, I got 12 hoping they would fit and they did!

Another added: “Really nice trousers, the material is thick enough not to see through and hangs really well. The legs are wide, but not ridiculously wide (like some lately).”

After spotting the pants in her local H&M, influencer Nicky was so in love with her pair that she made an entire Tiktok video dedicated to the high street find.

Speaking about the fit, she said, “They're just so perfect for us tall girls.”

While shoppers might check out what the pants look like in the mirror, there's another reason why we run to the high street to grab a pair.

Although they usually retail for £32, the navy blue version is currently on sale and has been reduced to £20.99.

If you want a pair, you have to be quick, because the H&M website showed that there are only a limited number of sizes available in this color.

If you want an alternative color, don't despair, because you can still get 15 percent off any other color via the H&M app.

It seems like the perfect excuse to give your work wardrobe a new look.

Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas nearly 100 days ago, President Biden and his aides have struggled to keep the war under control, fearing that a regional escalation could quickly draw in American troops.

Now, with the American-led strike in nearly 30 locations in Yemen on Thursday and a smaller strike the next day, it is no longer a question of whether a regional conflict will emerge. It has already started. The biggest questions now are the intensity of the conflict and whether it can be contained.

This is exactly the outcome that no one wanted, probably not even Iran.

“We are not interested in a war with Yemen. We are not interested in any conflict,” White House spokesman John F. Kirby said Friday. “In fact, everything the president has done has tried to prevent any escalation of the conflict, including last night's strikes.”

Biden's decision to launch airstrikes after resisting calls to act against Yemen-based Houthi militants whose repeated attacks on Red Sea shipping have begun to take their toll on global trade a clear change in strategy. After issuing a series of warnings, officials said, Mr. Biden felt his hand was forced after a barrage of missile and drone attacks on Tuesday targeted a U.S. cargo ship and the Navy ships surrounding it.

“This is already a regional war, no longer limited to Gaza but spreading to Lebanon, Iraq, Syria and Yemen,” said Hugh Lovatt, a Middle East expert for the European Council on Foreign Relations. Washington, he added, wanted to demonstrate its willingness to deter Iranian provocations, so it conspicuously positioned its aircraft carriers and fighter jets to respond quickly. But those same views leave the United States more vulnerable.

Over the course of twelve weeks, attacks on Israeli, American, and Western interests have come from Lebanon, Iraq, and Syria, prompting modest, carefully targeted responses from U.S. and Israeli forces. The United States has also issued warnings to Iran, which the Americans say is acting as a loose coordinator.

What was striking about the retaliatory attack in Yemen was its scale: Using fighter jets and sea-launched missiles, US and British forces, supported by a small number of other allies, hit a large number of Houthi missiles and drone sites.

Mr. Biden is walking a fine line between deterrence and escalation, and his aides admit there is no science behind the calculation. Tehran and its allies, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, have been cautious in their support of Hamas and have kept their actions contained, to avoid a larger US military response that could undermine Tehran's exercise of power in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria to threaten.

But how much control Iran has over its allies is up for debate, and its leaders could also be misinterpreting the American and Israeli red lines.

The Houthis, a small Iranian-backed tribe in Yemen, are among the most aggressive in pushing borders, trying to block international trade routes through the Red Sea and ignoring American and Western warnings to stop doing so.

Houthi officials say the sole purpose of their attacks is to force Israel to halt its military campaign and allow the free flow of aid into Gaza.

Western diplomats said there was reluctance to strike back against the Houthis, partly to avoid disrupting the ceasefire in Yemen's civil war, and partly because of the difficulty of completely eliminating their threat. But the Houthis' repeated attacks on ships, their direct fire on U.S. helicopters and their attack Tuesday on a U.S. cargo ship left the United States with what officials say was no real choice.

US officials said the Pentagon launched a second round of strikes against the Houthis on Friday, bombing a radar facility in Yemen.

It is not known how long it will take before the Houthis will recover and threaten the ships in the Red Sea again, as they have promised. So far, the response has been muted, with only a single anti-ship missile fired harmlessly into the Red Sea, far from any passing ship, a Pentagon official told reporters earlier on Friday.

But deeper U.S. military involvement also contributes to the perception in the larger world that the United States is acting even more directly on Israel's behalf, risking further damage to U.S. and Western standing as the death toll in Gaza rises. Israel is now defending its conduct against charges of genocide before an international court.

Iran is using allies like Hezbollah and the Houthis to distance itself from their actions and maintain its credibility in the region, trying to avoid a direct attack that could jeopardize the Islamic Revolution and its nuclear program.

But Iran is also being pulled along by those same proxies.

“Iran is really pushing for it,” said François Heisbourg, a French military analyst. “It's another reason why they don't want war now: they want their centrifuges to run peacefully.” The Iranians do not have a nuclear weapon, but could enrich enough uranium to weapons grade within a few weeks, from the current 60 percent enrichment to 90 percent, he said. “They did 95 percent of the work.”

Israel is also increasing its attacks on Iranian allies, especially in Lebanon and Syria. Following the attack by Hamas, Hezbollah in Lebanon began a series of attacks from Lebanon, prompting Israel to evacuate civilians near the conflict.

After that, Israel's air campaign killed 19 Hezbollah members in Syria in three months, more than twice as many in the rest of 2023 combined, according to a Reuters tally. During the same period, more than 130 Hezbollah fighters were also killed by Israel in Lebanon.

Amine Hoteit, a retired Lebanese army general and analyst, listed several objectives of the Israeli strikes in Syria: to maintain attention there and to pressure the Syrian government “to cut off the Iranian supply route.”

U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Syria to prevent an ISIS resurgence have been attacked by Iran-backed militias 130 times since Oct. 17, according to the Pentagon's count Thursday, with a total of 53 attacks in Iraq and 77 in Syria. The United States has retaliated less than a dozen times, mostly after American casualties.

Each time, the United States has said its response is intended to deter further attacks and is aimed at sending a message to Iran and its allies, who operate freely in Iraq and Syria. But no American troops were killed. The concern, according to U.S. officials, is that sooner or later one of the strikes will kill troops, and the response would then be much deadlier and could spiral out of control.

On January 4, the US military launched a rare retaliatory strike in Baghdad, killing a militia leader it blames for recent attacks on US personnel, a move condemned by the Iraqi government.

Although the Iraqi government is now dominated by parties close to Iran, the American presence is largely tolerated due to fears that the Islamic State could quickly regain ground without American help.

But on Friday, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks on the Houthis in Yemen. “We believe that expanding the scope of the targets does not represent a solution to the problem – rather it will lead to an expansion of the scope of the war,” the statement said.

While the main focus has been on Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah, the Houthi threat to trade has the potential for the greatest global impact, as about 30 percent of the world's container ships pass through the Red Sea. Volvo, Tesla and other automakers in Europe have already suspended production for a few days or more due to disruptions in receiving parts as ships sail around the Red Sea and Suez Canal.

The United States and more than a dozen other countries have formed a coalition to protect shipping, Operation Prosperity Guardian. But the Houthis have continued to try to attack ships, with or without Israeli connections, and Maersk decided to suspend all shipping in the Red Sea after a December 31 attack on one of his ships. It has warned its customers to expect significant disruptions, and analysts expect higher prices will contribute to global inflation.

In public speeches this week, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Hezbollah leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah reiterated that they do not want extended war. But Colin P. Clarke, a counterterrorism expert and research director at the Soufan Group, said Israel could not afford to be complacent, given the serious miscalculation before October 7 that Hamas was also not interested in war.

Recent killings that have struck at the heart of Iran's ties with Hezbollah and Hamas have unnerved Iranians, who have described them in chat rooms and on social media as “beaten again and again.”

Brig. General Sayyed Razi Mousavi, who was killed in Damascus on Christmas, was responsible for purchasing missiles, rockets and drones for Hezbollah in Lebanon and allied militias in Syria and Iraq for 20 years, according to Iranian media. Mr. Khamenei performed the Prayer of the Dead over his body at his funeral, an honor reserved for the most respected subordinates.

Saleh al-Arouri, deputy political head of Hamas, killed in a drone strike in the heart of Hezbollah's power base in the Dahieh district of Beirut, was the Hamas member closest to Iran and Hezbollah and the person who they most trusted with sensitive messages and facilitating financing and technical know-how from Iran.

Since the outbreak of war between Israel and Hamas nearly 100 days ago, President Biden and his aides have struggled to keep the war under control, fearing that a regional escalation could quickly draw in American troops.

Now, with the American-led attack on 16 locations in Yemen early Friday morning, it is no longer questionable whether a regional conflict will arise. It has already started. The biggest questions now are the intensity of the conflict and whether it can be contained.

This is exactly the outcome that no one wanted, probably not even Iran.

“We're in a low-boiling regional war right now and that's what you're seeing right now,” said Colin P. Clarke, research director at the Soufan Group, a security and intelligence consultancy focused on the Middle East.

The tunnel in the northern Gaza Strip is wide enough for a large car, reinforced with concrete and equipped with electrical wiring. And at least one section of the tunnel — which Israel says is the largest it has discovered so far in Gaza — is within walking distance of an Israeli border crossing.

Israeli military officials, who took a group of reporters, including two journalists from The New York Times, to the tunnel on Friday, say its size and complexity demonstrate the scale of the challenge they face as they try to root out Hamas. The group has built a network of tunnels across Gaza that allows it to evade and attack Israeli forces, the army says.

The military arranged the tour as Israel comes under increasing pressure to conclude the most intense phase of the war within weeks to try to limit the death toll; Nearly 20,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

The Biden administration envisions Israel shifting from its massive ground and air campaign to one in which elite forces carry out more precise, intelligence-based missions to find and kill Hamas leaders and rescue hostages captured during the group’s attack on Israel on October 7. , US officials say.

The size of the tunnel the journalists toured through on Friday and its proximity to the border was a reminder not only of the challenges that await Israel, but also of its inability to prevent the construction of such a structure in the first place.

But Israeli military chief spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari, who was among the officials leading the tour, said it was important to note that the tunnel was evidence that Hamas has diverted building materials, especially concrete, from civilian use .

“This tunnel has been built for years,” he said. “Millions of dollars have been spent on this tunnel, hundreds of tons of cement, a lot of electricity. Instead of spending them all – the money, the cement, the electricity – on hospitals, schools, housing and other needs of Gazans.”

The Times agreed to wait until Sunday to publish details of the tour, but otherwise no restrictions were placed on how the visit would be reported. The journalists were escorted the entire time and were not allowed to wander further into the tunnel, with Israeli forces stopping journalists at about 150 to 200 meters, approximately 650 feet.

But even in that short stretch it was possible to see that the tunnel stretched ahead for a great distance. Vertical shafts extended from the main tube, which Israeli officers said suggests the tunnel may be connected to a larger network deeper within the earth.

Two military officials interviewed after the tour said recently gathered intelligence indicated Israel grossly underestimated the size of the underground network. The system, which the Army previously estimated was about 60 miles long, is now believed to be closer to 250 miles long, they said.

These claims and others about the tunnels could not be independently verified.

Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, has dug a warren of tunnels under the enclave for years, according to Israeli officials. The network, which reportedly snakes under dense residential areas through much of the strip, is a veritable subway system for the militant group, using the labyrinth to hide and transport weapons and fighters.

The tunnels have been a prime target for attacks since Israel declared war on Hamas in the aftermath of the October 7 attack on Israel that killed an estimated 1,200 people. But as international anger grows over the civilian deaths in Gaza, some Israeli officials say they have tried to think of alternative ways to destroy the tunnels besides bombing.

Over the past month, Israeli military engineers have experimented with pumping seawater into tunnels in northern Gaza in an effort to drive out any fighters hiding there, according to Israeli military officials interviewed after the tour who spoke on condition anonymity because they weren’t. authorized to speak publicly about the effort. It’s unclear whether the technique will work given the force required to move water through the system’s multiple spurs, officials said.

In addition to arranging Friday’s tour, the Israeli military also provided reporters a video showing men digging a tunnel with large earth-moving machines. The military said it obtained the video when it raided Hamas offices during its ground invasion. The video shows that the work is being carried out in a large building that resembles a warehouse.

It was unclear where the video was shot, but the Israeli military said the video showed construction of the tunnel where a tour was given Friday.

Two officials said Israeli leaders were surprised by the content of the video because they had not realized that Hamas had access to this type of earth-moving equipment, which can build very large tunnels more safely and quickly. Until the discovery of the video, officials said they believed only Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon, and not Hamas, could build such large tunnels.

The military said the tunnel where it conducted the tour was the first it had found that was large enough to allow cars or other vehicles through.

The army was released on Sunday another video that said a brother of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader in Gaza, was driven through the tunnel in a car. The military said the presence of Sinwar’s brother Muhammed – who is also considered a top Hamas leader and his brother’s confidante – indicated the strategic importance of this tunnel.

The underground corridors have become a central part of the information war that is also being fought over Gaza.

Last month, when Israeli forces moved to occupy Gaza’s largest hospital, Al-Shifa, which they said provided cover for an underground Hamas base, the militants and hospital officials insisted that the facility be used only to treat patients.

But after Israeli soldiers captured Al-Shifa, they conducted a tour where journalists were shown a 100-meter tunnel section and rooms beneath the hospital. The military argued that the tunnel, along with weapons it said were found at the hospital and surveillance videos of hostages being brought in by armed men, supported its decision to send its troops there.
