The Color Purple enjoys the second-biggest holiday opening in history as it rakes in a whopping $18.1 million on its first day of wide release

The film, which didn’t feature the likes of Beyonce and Rihanna, also enjoyed the second-biggest Christmas opening in box office history, trailing only 2009’s Sherlock Holmes, which grossed $24.6 million.

It was also reported that 65% of The Color Purple’s audience consisted of African American individuals, and moviegoers over the age of 55 also made up a quarter of the film’s viewer base.

The new version of The Color Purple is inspired by the 2005 Broadway adaptation of the classic novel.

The feature film follows the trials and tribulations experienced by several African American women in the South during the twentieth century.

The first film adaptation of The Color Purple was released in 1985 and was nominated for a total of eleven Academy Awards.

The original feature film’s director, Steven Spielberg, and one of its stars, Oprah Winfrey, served as executive producers for the new version of the film.

Blitz Bazawule signed on as director of the project in August 2020, and it was also revealed that Walker and her daughter Rebecca would serve as producers that same month.

Much of the feature film’s cast, including Taraji P. Henson, Colman Domingo and Halle Bailey, was added from 2021 to 2022.

Several cast members were featured on the film’s soundtrack album, which debuted earlier this month.
