Taylor Swift inspires Super Bowl 2024 ad about fathers and daughters

Taylor Swift is the muse for Cetaphil's moving Super Bowl LVIII ad featuring a daughter and father bonding over football.

“Fathers and daughters around the world have been brought closer together thanks to a certain globe-trotting singer shouting from the football sidelines, and that's what we're here for. 😉,” Cetaphil wrote via YouTube on Friday, February 9. “So this season we invite fathers and daughters to come closer to each other's worlds – daughters who share their love of skin care and fathers who share their love of the game.”

The video starts with a teenage girl scrolling on her phone with headphones on while her father watches a football match. The father later tries to bond with her by showing a video on his phone, but the daughter remains uninterested.

The girl then walks to her room and sits at her dressing table to apply some moisturizer to her face. In the background, she hears a football announcer insinuating that Swift, 34, is at the game, prompting the daughter to head downstairs.

Kris Jenner, Jenna Ortega and Kate McKinnon will all be part of the 2024 Super Bowl. The big game is the most-watched night of television in the US (115 million people watched it last year), so advertisers are paying big bucks for top talent. Companies also drop a pretty penny to air an ad […]

“Well folks, there she is, here to support,” the announcer exclaims. “The game's most famous fan.”

The daughter bumps into her father watching his team play, and he smiles as she enters the room. Later, he surprises his daughter with a gift: her own red sweater with the number 13 on the front, referencing the color of Swift's friend, Travis Kelce's team the Kansas City Chiefs, and the pop star's favorite song. She accepts the gift and he applies some of her moisturizer under his eyes, just like football players blacken their eyes.

After putting on the sweater, she heads downstairs to spend quality time with her father. He pulls her into a hug and shows off his latest accessory: several friendship bracelets, reminiscent of the jewelry fans exchange at Swift's concerts.

“This season, fathers and daughters have found a new way to connect,” reads a title card, noting that the duo featured in the clip was a real-life father-daughter duo from New York.

Since Swift started dating Kelce, 34, in the summer of 2023, she has become a fixture in the NFL, having attended several games to support the tight end

Many of Swift's fans tuned in to catch a glimpse of the Grammy winner. NBC Sports reported that viewership among teenage girls rose 53% when Swift attended the Chiefs' game against the New York Jets in October 2023.

While the NFL has gone all out on the “Swift Effect,” some fans have taken to social media to express their frustration with Swift's presence. Despite the backlash, many have come to Swift's defense, including the commissioner Roger Goodell.

“I'm excited to have her there,” he said during a press conference ahead of the Super Bowl. “It creates a buzz, it creates a new group of young fans – especially young women – who are interested in asking, 'Why is she going to this game? Why is she interested in this game?'”

Late night host Seth Meijers also expressed support for Swift and Kelce, while noting that the actual football broadcast only shows “11 minutes of actual gameplay.”

“This is such an innocent All-American thing: They kiss on the field after he wins the big game and she celebrates with his mom and dances with the family,” he said during a January episode of his Late Night with Seth Meyers talk show. “How can you be mad about that?”
