The new film, written and directed by Laura Chinn, follows a teenager who lives with her weak-willed mother and has to take her brother to a specialized facility.
She forms an unlikely friendship with an eccentric activist during protests surrounding a landmark medical case.
The coming-of-age film is also based on Laura's life experience from the early 2000s.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 21, followed by a streaming release in the United States on February 9 on Hulu.
In 1998, Thandie married Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again writer and director Ol Parker, who also wrote both Best Exotic Marigold Hotel films.
In addition to Nico, the showbiz couple also shares a 23-year-old daughter named Ripley and a nine-year-old son named Booker.
Nico entered the family business with a role in Disney's live-action remake of the 1941 animated flying elephant musical Dumbo.
