The Voice winner Lachie Gill gives chilling warning to prospective singing competition contestants: ‘Don’t expect to be a star’

Lachie Gill revealed on Wednesday that it’s incredibly difficult to become a successful performer – even if you’ve starred on a popular singing show.

The former Voice winner, 25, said that because there are so many budding artists looking for their big break, a singer really needs to stand out to get noticed.

“People think if they just won a TV show, they’re going to be a star. It doesn’t work that way,” he said The Daily Telegraph.

“In the end, there are so many artists and you have to be that little bit different to make people want to listen to you instead of someone else.”

The Melbourne native said at the time that he recently recorded an album of new songs and couldn’t wait to release them.

“We have maybe 13 songs ready to go that we can put out, so we definitely want to get those out in a reasonable amount of time so people don’t wait months for a new song,” he said.

His warning rings true because while some singing show winners, such as Australian Idol’s Guy Sebastian, have gone on to have successful music careers, many others are fading from the spotlight, such as 2021 winner of The Voice Bella Taylor Smith.

Lachie was crowned the winner of The Voice Australia in June last year.

During the gripping grand finale episode, the Victorian won the $100,000 prize money and a recording contract with Universal Music Australia.

After host Sonia Kruger delivered the verdict, the former soccer player and gym teacher said he was “overwhelmed.”

‘Oh my God! I never, ever expected this from the start. I’m just blown away. Thank you so much. Wow. Thank you,’ Lachie exclaimed.

Lachie’s coach, British singer Rita Ora, praised him for his talent and thanked Australia for their support.

‘You’ve done all this. Australia, thank you, I love you. I feel like this is just the beginning for you. Congratulations. I’m so happy for you I can’t breathe!’ she gushed.

From the very beginning, Rita was determined to get the talented Lachie on her team, believing him to be in a ‘class of his own’.

The pair sang Lady Gaga’s hit Always Remember Us This Way during the finale.
