Lead commentator Darren Fletcher welcomed viewers to the game, saying: “Forget Gladiators, the battle is here.”

The comment was in reference to Gladiators on BBC One, which is shown at the same time and has recently been relaunched.

The beloved 1990s show has been renewed, with Bradley Walsh presenting alongside his son Barney.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg will also oversee the action as a referee on the show.

Clattenburg recently dipped his toe back into the refereeing game after taking a job at Nottingham Forest.

The former whistler will become a ‘referee analyst’ for the club, the first of its kind.

The football feeling doesn’t stop with the popular TV show, with Guy Mowbray providing the commentary.

Mowbray is known for his commentary on Match of the Day week in, week out.
