“It could be worse,” Kroos told CBS Sports when asked how it felt to retire with a Champions League winners medal. ‘That was the plan, but it is of course difficult to plan this.

‘It’s clear that we didn’t play our best game today, but it seems like we can’t lose in these games.

‘We were quite lucky in the first half, we didn’t play a good game. We changed some things, we tried to be a little more compact. [Carlo Ancelotti] Judas stirred [Bellingham] next to me to be a bit more compact and I think it helped.

“After we scored we improved and after that there was no doubt anymore, but in the first half we struggled very much.”

Kroos made an impressive 465 appearances for Los Blancos, scoring 28 goals and registering 98 assists, the 17th highest in club history and the second highest player still at the club, behind teammate Luka Modric.

“Toni Kroos will remain forever in the hearts of every madridista thanks to his mastery of the game and the fact that he gave everything for our jersey, a stable example of Real Madrid’s values,” the statement said.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez paid his own tribute, adding: ‘Toni Kroos is one of the great players in the history of Real Madrid and this club will always be his home.’

Kroos has played a key role in Madrid’s title-winning success this season, making 32 league appearances and scoring nine goals.

“You don’t lose finals,” Kroos added after Madrid’s latest success. ‘That’s a good foundation to have. It’s strange when you see our route to the final in recent years.

“Of course it’s about quality, but the mentality is crazy to be even the worst team and win these games. It’s a lot of belief and I think that’s what sets this club apart from all the others.’

His renewed form saw him take the title again at international level, following his first retirement in 2021 in the wake of Germany’s Euro 2020 campaign.
