CHILDREN have revealed the sports they would like to do at school, with rock climbing, boxing and archery topping the list.

A survey of 1,000 children aged 10 to 16 found that while netball and football are still popular, a third want to try less traditional sports.

But traditional lessons such as hockey and cross country are falling out of favor as children look for more modern sports.

Some schools are already offering new classes, with 17 percent of children taking part in circuit training and six percent enjoying yoga in PE.

The research was conducted on behalf of SPAR Great Britainwhich is giving away £50,000 and encouraging schools to apply for £200 grants to buy new equipment and improve their sports days.

GB hurdler Marli Jessop, who is backing the campaign to encourage schools across the UK to apply for the Sports Day Grant, said: “When I was at school, sports day was huge for me and I think it is so important is for children in so many different ways. ways.

“I have always loved sport, whether it was gymnastics, trampoline jumping or running, and my school sports day made me realize what I enjoyed most.

“It gave me confidence at school and when I wasn’t good at academics, gym class helped me to be myself.”

The survey, which also surveyed 1,000 parents, found that 67 percent wished they had as many sports opportunities at their age as children do today, believing sports can build team skills (70 percent) and physical fitness (69 percent). help improve. and trust (60 percent).

For parents, nostalgic sports such as badminton, hockey and cross-country running have become their top sports at school.

But only three percent of today’s children would say badminton or running was their favorite sport, and only two percent would say the same about hockey.

The Men’s and Women’s World Football Championships and the Olympic Games are the sporting events that have inspired children to become more involved in sports.

But 33 percent believe not enough time is spent on the subject, while 23 percent have limited access to sports equipment.

It also found that 90 percent of parents agree that it is expensive to buy sports equipment and equipment to cater for children’s diverse sporting interests, and that 58 percent of mothers and fathers struggle to participate in outdoor sports activities pay for their children’s education.

As a result, 35 percent said the only way their children have access to sport is through their PE classes.
