Trader Joe’s is coming to Springfield. Just not that Springfield.

So when The Springfield News-Leader, a newspaper covering Springfield, Mo. serves, reported that Trader Joe’s planned to open a store there quoting a company statement, this was noted.

“I am pleased to confirm that we have plans to open a new store in Springfield,” the Trader Joe’s spokeswoman had written, according to the newspaper.

But ‘Springfield’ turned out not to be descriptive enough. There are Springfield, Florida, Springfield, Mass., Springfield, Illinois, Springfield, NJ, Springfield, Ohio, Springfield, Oregon, Springfield, Pa., Springfield, Vt., Springfield, Tenn., and Springfield, Va.

Springfield is also where “The Simpsons” is set. Show creator Matt Groening, who in recent years acknowledged that the city in his home state of Oregon was the inspiration for the city in the show, said: “Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the US. anticipating the show’s success I thought, ‘This is going to be cool; everyone will think it’s their Springfield.’ And they do.”

Minutes after the Springfield, Mo., newspaper published the Trader Joe’s news, the company spokeswoman said she had made a mistake, the newspaper wrote. “I realized this morning that The Springfield News-Leader is in Missouri. Unfortunately, I thought you were talking about Springfield, Virginia,” she said.
