Rumeysa Ozturk’s plane touched in Boston on Saturday evening and ended a six -week -old Odyssey for the student in the federal detention that aroused indignation about President Trump’s performance.

Her return to Massachusetts, where she was arrested in March, came one day after a federal judge in Vermont ordered that she was released From a detention facility in Louisiana.

Mrs. Ozturk, a Turkish citizen who studied at Tufts University on a student visa, was one of the more than a thousand international students whose visas were canceled by the federal government and who had to deal with deportation. The movements came when the Trump government escalated its attack on higher education, and said the goal was to eradicate anti -Semitism.

Mrs. Ozturk had written an opinion piece in the student newspaper in which it was criticized from the university’s reaction to pro-Palestinian requirements. Her supporters denied that she was anti -Semitic and said she was held as a retribution for her speech contrary to the first amendment.

On Saturday, her friends and former professors bounced between joy during her release and pain that Mrs Ozturk, a fulbright -learner who specializes in children’s media and who is known as an inquisitive line follower, would ever be held.

“She is one of the most humanistic, compassionate and good -hearted people I have ever known,” said Mehmet Fatih Uslu, one of her former professors, in an e -mail. Her non -bregated position, which focused on death in the literature of children, reflected her sensitive nature, he said.

On Friday, judge William K. Sessions III of the US District of Vermont said that her detention would potentially cool off “the speech of the millions and millions of individuals in this country who are not citizens.” He also said that the government, who has accused Mrs. Ozturk of fascinating ‘in activities to support Hamas’, had not introduced any other evidence than the pro-Palestinian opinion-essay that Mrs. Ozturk had co-author.

This is a developing story. Come back for updates.
