Television and movies came to a standstill when the Writers Guild Association launched a strike in May after failing to reach an agreement in contract negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
Two months later, SAG-AFTRA joined the writers on the picket line after their own labor dispute with the AMPTP. Most Hollywood productions were subsequently halted unless they adhered to the SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement, which allowed some projects to continue filming.
The WGA and AMPTP agreed on a three-year contract in September.
“We are very proud to say that this deal is exceptional – with meaningful benefits and protections for writers in every sector of membership,” the WGA negotiating committee wrote in an email to its members. The notice contained 94 pages of new terms that referenced compensation profits, a new requirement for minimum staffing levels in TV writers’ rooms, improved payment terms for screenwriters and protections for the use of artificial intelligence.
Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA signed their own tentative deal earlier this month. However, union members still must vote yes on the deal to officially end the strike.
