The body of a woman was found Thursday in a wooded area on the University of Georgia campus, according to university officials, who said foul play was suspected in her death.

Just after noon, a friend reported to campus police that the woman was missing after she failed to return from a run near the university’s intramural fields, University of Georgia police said.

At 12:38 p.m., officers found the woman’s body in a patch of woods near a lake. The woman, whose name and age have not been released, had ‘visible injuries’, the police said.

It was unclear whether she had been a student.

University police said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke police assisted in the investigation.

In a statement, the university said it has canceled the remainder of classes on Thursday and all classes on Friday. Officials encouraged students and staff to take precautions on campus and advised people to “travel in groups whenever possible and be aware of your surroundings.”

According to The red and black, a campus newspaper, students on the intramural fields said their classes were canceled Thursday afternoon midway through a class period. The newspaper said police officers checked the identifications of people in the fields before leaving the area.
