Sinner* 3-4 Fritz (6-3) (6-4)

The home crowd are mainly here for Fritz, but they know good tennis when they see it and a lovely forehand in-close from Sinner is well-appreciated.

They then given an even greater roar for Fritz as his perfectly-placed drop shot is followed up by a lob and subsequent volley that moves him ahead in the game.

Fritz has the momentum and continues to build with his best tennis of the match to take a 40-15 lead against the serve that has the whole place absolutely bouncing.

Sinner double-faults and Fritz finally, finally, breaks serve to take the lead in the third set.

Sinner 3-3 Fritz* (6-3) (6-4)

Sinner stars by taking a point but is reeled in by Fritz who is being saved by his serve at times tonight.

We get a really good rally between the pair that leaves Fritz asking questions of Sinner but not enough to trouble the Italian.

Sinner capitalises on two unforced errors by Fritz and finds himself 40-15 up before being pulled back by one point.

Fritz faults on his first serve and a high octane rally goes his way to take the game to deuce.

He needs to hold serve and does exactlty what is ordered by taking advantage and then coming out on top in another great exchange.

Could that be the turning point for the American?

Sinner* 3-2 Fritz (6-3) (6-4)

Fritz gets a huge roar of support from the American crowd when levelling the game at 15-15 with a very stylish and powerful forehand.

He really wants to change the narrative of this set but is let down when trying to compete with a fantastic Sinner serve.

Every time Fritz has an opening, Sinner shuts it and that’s exactly what happens once again as the match leader navigates his way around a tricky double-fault to evenutally manage another game win.

Sinner leads midway through the third set.

Sinner 2-2 Fritz* (6-3) (6-4)

Fritz gets us started with a wicked ace, but can’t do anything when trying to defend a backhand that eventually see’s his effort dip into the net.

Sinner tests out his footwork when strethcing to reach a serve and is beaten by the pace of Fritz’s strong forehand.

The world No.1 covers incredible ground to get a reply following a brief rally but can’t get enough on the ball and Fritz manages to hold out to level us once again.

Sinner* 2-1 Fritz (6-3) (6-4)

Fritz tries to take Sinner’s serve on but is chasing shadows as Sinner takes an early two-point lead in the game before being slightly pegged back.

Fritz can’t reply when he needed to as Sinner see’s out the game with backhand and forehand winners that see’s him hold the serve that his opponent is so desperate to break.

Sinner 1-1 Fritz* (6-3) (6-4)

Finally we see some short game and Fritz comes out on top as Sinner hits off-target. Sinner then replies to level the game as he has done so brilliantly throughout this evening.

Sinner then goes long with a return to give Fritz renewed breathing room in the game that he takes to move into a two-point lead.

He completes the game with an ace and we are level in the third set.

Sinner* 1-0 Fritz (6-3) (6-4)

Fritz gets the first points on the board to encourage a muted applause from the American crowd who are already fearing the worst. His second point receives an even greater reply from those in attendance.

Sinner is continuing to struggle with some of his first serves and can’t withstand the pace on a return from Fritz who takes a 40-0 lead against the serve.

But, the leader replies with two quick points of his own and then takes us to deuce with an ace that comes at the perfect time for him.

Sinner aces his next serve to take advantage and wins the game with a fired up volley as he holds on from 40-0 down.

Sinner takes the second set (6-3) (6-4)

It looks like things are getting away from Fritz as Sinner takes a 30-0 lead, but the server fights back with a serve over 150mph.

It’s the rally where Fritz then comes undone to give Sinner two set points. Does the Italian buckle? No chance as he again gets the better of Fritz in a rally with a stunning backhand that leaves his opponent crumpling on the ground.

If Fritz is going to win this then he will have to take the match to five sets!

Sinner* 5-4 Fritz (6-3)

We get a rally for the first time in what feels like forever that Sinner comes out on top in as Fritz hits a tame shot into the net when trying a delicate backhand.

He is then handed a point in return by Sinner who watches a heavy strike settle out of court. His next point is brilliant however with a small shot that just reaches over the net.

Fritz can’t control a return to Sinner’s serve next and the Italian takes the game after a short rally to put all the pressure on his opponent.

Sinner 4-4 Fritz* (6-3)

Sinner wants to break Fritz’ serve but wanting and doing are totally different things as he finds out with the American racing to a 40-0 lead.

He pulls back a point but can’t get another when trying to get deeper for his return and we are level again in the second set.

Sinner* 4-3 Fritz (6-3)

Again Sinner takes control on his serving set, but it’s a better response from Fritz than what we have seen in the last couple of games.

However, the world No.1 is dominant with his serve and makes no mistake with two break points in the game as he again takes contorl of the second set.

If he can break Fritz in the next game then he will fancy himself winning the second set with serve.

Sinner 3-3 Fritz* (6-3)

Fritz starts us off with an ace and almost has another but is denied as Sinner somehow stretches to reach the ball only for him to be beaten with the follow-up effort.

The American quickly finds himself at 40-0 and quickly wins the game to level the second set once again.

This has been much better from Fritz in the second set and Sinner knows that he needs to up his game when not serving.

Sinner* 3-2 Fritz (6-3)

This is much better from the home favourite as he breaks Sinner to move 15-15, but can only follow that up with a poor close-range shot into the net.

Sinner continues this strange run of fault serves in the second set but manages to limp to a lead as Fritz is called out on one of his deep returns.

He then wins the game as Fritz somehow finds his return to one quick delivery up in the air and almost out of the stadium. Sinner in control.

Sinner 2-2 Fritz* (6-3)

Fritz is finding the rhythm with his serves in the second set as he makes it seven out of eight to take a 40-0 advantage in the game.

That’s later made a game win that levels the scoreboard ad Sinner now needs to hold his serve or Fritz will fancy his chances of pulling a set back.

Sinner* 2-1 Fritz (6-3)

There’s a little bit more competition as Fritz makes Sinner play some awkward shots that the European just isn’t able to pull off as he concedes a 30-15 lead.

Both players take another point each and Sinner is in danger of being taken to deuce, but recovers composure and wins out the game with an unanswered forehand.

Sinner 1-1 Fritz (6-3)

That is an essential game win for Fritz as he basically does exactly what Sinner did to him a game earlier and we are level in the second set.

Fritz was broken three times in the first set and makes sure he doesn’t start with another by quickly beating Sinner to give this American crowd some hope.

Sinner* 1-0 Fritz (6-3)

It’s start as you mean to go on from Sinner who storms to a dominant 40-0 win in the opening game of the second set.

Fritz simply had no reply to his counterparts serves and that is a big statement from the match leader.

Can Fritz reply with serve next?

Sinner wins the first set (6-3)

Sinner is in cruise control as he takes an early 30-0 lead as Fritz racks up a couple of faults on his first serves. Shots are then exchanged and Sinner is just not relenting as he makes Fritz run in every possible direction to put himself in control.

Fritz pulls a point back with his second ace of the match and then another as Sinner perhaps overconfidently tries a cross-court half-volley that only needed a slight tap over the net.

He makes no mistake with his next attempt, this time forcing Fritz into a mistake that wins the Italian the first set in front of an American crowd that has just been quietened slightly.

Great tennis on show but Sinner’s quality is just starting to show through. Fritz must reply or this could be a quick final.

Sinner* 5-3 Fritz

Both players take a little bit of time to refresh and cool down before getting the next game underway that see’s Fritz take the opening point.

Sinner fights back to make it 15-15 and adds further points as Fritz makes an error by hitting one of his returns out as we start to get a few more unforced errors.

The world No.1 eventually takes the game as Fritz struggles to stay within the lines and Sinner now has a chance at set point if he can break his opponent’s serve again.

Sinner 4-3 Fritz*

Sinner breaks Fritz just as he did in the opening game of the final but it is some show of athelticism from the American who refused to give up and chasing every ball.

Sinner looks to have regained some composure and is now within touching distance of taking the first set.

Sinner* 3-3 Fritz

Well we are just beginning to see some uncomfortable play from Sinner as with the game squared at 15-15 he ends up with a bizarre shot sailing into the crowd.

Fritz is making this a real contest but can’t hold on and Sinner ends up easing to the game win relatively comfortably in the end.

There’s another Taylor in the house!

Well it wouldn’t be a US Open final without the presence of some of the world’s biggest celebrities and the cameras have picked out a trio of global stars as Taylor Swift joins Travis Kelce and Patrick Maholmes in the VIP stands.

They are certainly being treated to some stunning action early on!

Sinner 2-3 Fritz*

The pace quickens in the fifth game and we are treated to some absolutely monster forehands as both competitors play deep on either side of the court.

Nobody appears interested in visiting the net yet in this match and you wonder how long it will be before one of this duo try to find an advantage with their short-game.

Sinner is the first to reach game point of which he has only one but can’t get the better of Fritz following a frantic exchange of 23 total shots.

The American is really beginning to enjoy this and takes first advantage at deuce before storming to victory at the first time of asking. That’s three game wins in a row for Fritz now.

Sinner* 2-2 Fritz

Fritz gets on top of Sinner’s second serve and takes a 15-0 lead, only for the Italian to fault on his next delivery. He then recovers to move level.

Fritz looks a lot calmer now and moves forward to meet a Sinner return that the world No.1 instead parries into the net and promptly examining his racket.

The American then comes on strong to move onto 40-15. Sinner pulls one break point back and adds another to take us to deuce for the first time tonight.

The advantage flip-flops between both and eventually Fritz comes out on top to break Sinner’s serve.

Sinner 2-1 Fritz*

The crowd realise they have a part to play and roar Fritz on – he duly obliges by acing his first serve in style. Sinner this time goes long with his next return and Fritz is only denied a second ace by going slightly long with his serve.

He looks in much better form with a strong forehand down the line leaving Sinner helpless and takes the game without reply to finally get a foothold in the final.

Sinner* 2-0 Fritz

Both players are hitting the ball as sweet as you like in the early exchanges, but Sinner is just that bit better with his accuracy.

Fritz makes two errors when hitting attempts long to give his opponent a 30-0 lead and Sinner puts himself into a commanding position by forcing the home favourite to scurry from side-to-side.

He wins the game with his second shot in the final exchange and that is a huge statment of intent from Sinner.

Sinner 1-0 Fritz*

Sinner breaks Fritz’s first serve with a brilliant forehand onto the line. The American hits long with his next effort after a brief short rally, but recovers with Sinner hitting into the net to make it 30-15.

We’re treated to another flurry of shots as Sinner takes control with two break points but is made to fight for the victory only for Fritz to miss his smash volley into the court.

Sinner takes an early break point and leads.

Fritz to serve first

Sinner wins the coin toss as Fritz incorrectly calls heads and the world No.1 will receive first at the Arthur Ashe stadium.

Here we go…

Out come the two dreaming players into a cocophony of noise as those in attendance wait to see a new US Open champion crowned.

The majority of that noise is understandably for home favourite Taylor Fritz, but there is some Italian support on display for Sinner who is looking to further build on his world No.1 status.

We’ll be getting the match underway shortly and you won’t miss a swing of the action with Mail Sport’s live updates.

Jannik Sinner: ‘This is a special occasion’

Jannik Sinner has just been speaking before heading out to the court. He knows the task at hand, beating an American on his own turf, but hopes are high for him.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: ‘I feel like every final is different, happy to be here, this is a special occasion. The crowd has been amazing, very fair, playing against an American is not easy but it’s normal in New York.

Plenty of support for Fritz

Tennis royalty in the house

Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam winner, has been snapped arriving at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre.

Sharapova famously won the US Open once in 2006, when she beat Justine Henin in straight sets.

She’ll be hoping for a fantastic game of tennis this evening!

ICYMI: Sabalenka wins women’s singles

If tonight’s clash is anything like the women’s singles final between Aryna Sabalenka and Jessica Pergula, well then we are in for a treat.

The Belarusian emerged victorious 7-5 7-5 to beat the American in what was an intense battle – and it ensured redemption for Sabalenka after her defeat in the final last year.

The home crowd at Flushing Meadows will be hoping for better luck for Fritz this evening.

Mail Sport’s Matt Lambert was in attendance last night and you can read his report on the action below…
