American cricket fans celebrated their team’s shock T20 win over Pakistan in New York on Thursday as they rejoiced in one of the biggest upsets in sporting history.

The US – a non-Test nation – had recorded a seven-wicket win over Canada in their opening match, but beating 2022 runners-up Pakistan stands as historic in a country that barely understands the rules of the game.
Aaron Jones, who scored an unbeaten 40-ball score of 94 against Canada, once again played a starring role for the tournament’s co-host as he extended the match to a super over with another crucial knock of 36 not out 26 .
Jones hit a six off Haris Rauf and then a single before Nitish Kumar’s boundary off the last ball made the score 159 at the end of regulation as Pakistan’s veteran fast bowler gave away 14 runs off the last six balls.
Both teams next play India in New York, while the US returns to action for their third group match on Wednesday.
Pakistan panicked in the super over when much-experienced fast bowler Mohammad Amir, preferred over Shaheen Shah Afridi, gave away 18 runs, including seven runs on wide balls when Jones hit a boundary to the left arm.
Fast bowler Saurabh Netravalkar, who earlier bowled brilliantly to take 2-18 from his four overs, conceded just 13 runs in the super over to give the US its most historic Twenty20 win against 2009 champions Pakistan.
Iftikhar Ahmed hit a boundary off the Netravalkar’s second ball before holed out at long-off as the left-armer kept his cool to snatch a famous win for the US.
Both teams next play India in New York, with Pakistan facing their arch-rivals on Sunday before the US return to action on Wednesday.
