Silicone Movement has unveiled a potentially transforming piece of storage technology on Computex 2025: the SM2324A single-chip USB4 SSD controller focused on feeding external drives with a maximum of 32 TB storage and reading speeds of 4,000 MB/s.
The company says that the SM2324 combines native USB4 support with an integrated power output -controller, which means that fewer parts, lower costs for OEMs and more compact SSD housings.
In theory, this could be a new class of ultrahigh capacity portable drives, although affordability and availability are still big questions.
A compact controller built for scale and platform-dependent use
In contrast to Multi -Chip Design, it is built to simplify production without endangering, thanks to successive writing speeds that can reach 3,809 MB/s -Assuming -cooling, is sufficient.
It also offers full support for 3D TLC and QLC Nand, as well as compatibility with power output 3.1, and was built using TSMC’s 12NM Low-Power Node to keep electricity requirements reasonable.
With support for a maximum of 32 TB and compatibility with Windows, MacOS, Linux and Even Apple Proors Workflows on iPhones, the controller clearly focuses on a broad market -anyone from mobile filmmakers to back -up users of companies.
Or it ends up in the drives that fight Best portable hard disk or Best SSD Status not only depends on his specifications, but also on how it is implemented.
Yet there are reservations. Although simplicity with one chip lowers the BOM costs, there is no promise that 32 TB USB4 SSDs will be priced for regular users based on the SM2324.
Nand -prices, thermal management requirements and limitations of electricity delivery can all push the end product to specialized territory.
So although it ultimately next to the Best External SSD Options in performance, this may not do this in price.
This device comes with security functions, including support for AES 128/256-bit coding, hardware SHA-384, a TRNG and full TCG Opal 2.0-Compliance.
There is even optional support for fingerprint -based authentication, although integration data is vague.
It also integrates the NandXend LDPC ECC -Engine from Silicon Motion, which improves endurance and reliability for both TLC and QLC memory.
In terms of design, the chip is compact, only 9 mm by 9 mm, and includes an aluminum heat spreader, making it viable for slender external housings.
“At Silicon Motion we are aimed at supplying SSD controller solutions that lead in both performance and power efficiency,” said Nelson Duann, senior VP of customer and automotive storage activities at Silicon Motion.
“… The SM2324 defines portable storage with a fully integrated USB4 solution with one chip. These technologies reflect our dedication to help customers build faster, smaller and more efficient SSDs for applications of the next generation.”
