A plane has crashed into a plane at Sydney Airport, causing major flight disruptions.

The Sydney Airport car, operated by a security company, crashed into the Jetstar A320 plane about 5.30am on Monday as it was being towed to a gate at the domestic terminal.

The crash trapped the driver and forced the plane, which had no passengers on board, to be taken out of service.

“A Sydney Airport commercial vehicle made contact with one of our aircraft, which was towed to the gate without passengers,” Jetstar said.

Dramatic footage taken at the airport shows the ute with a shattered windscreen after it rammed into the plane's No. 2 engine.

“We are working with Sydney Airport to fully investigate what happened.”

It is understood the security contractor driving the ute was uninjured in the crash and was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital in Randwick for further assessment.

Jetstar was forced to cancel a number of flights because three other aircraft were stuck behind the A320 after the crash.

The crash resulted in a total of six cancellations, including flights from Sydney to Adelaide, Melbourne and the Gold Coast.

The airline has organized alternative same-day flights for affected passengers.

Jetstar and Sydney Airport are both investigating the cause of the crash on the plane.

The aircraft is being assessed by engineers for damage and remains out of service.
