Chennai: Heavy rains continued to lash Chennai in Tamil Nadu while Cyclone Michaung is expected to make landfall on Tuesday, further deteriorating the current weather conditions. The heavy rainfall has left numerous low-lying areas and residential areas inundated with knee-high water. Videos circulating on the internet show heavily flooded streets and cars being swept away by strong currents. Several areas in Chennai are still flooded, leading to severe traffic jams, including on Chrompet GST Road in Chennai. In north Chennai, Vadakarai Road is also flooded, making it impassable from Madhavaram to Sengunram.

Chennai and its adjoining parts witnessed heavy overnight rains with Meenambakkam recording 196 mm and Nungambakkam receiving 154.3 mm of rainwater in just 24 hours.

Notably, schools, colleges and government offices in the city and three adjoining districts remained closed on Monday due to the critical situation. The state government has also asked private companies to allow their employees to work from home.
