Clashes broke out between inmates and police personnel at Gurdaspur Central Jail in Punjab on Thursday, leaving five constables and four inmates injured.

Punjab News: Chaos prevailed at Gurdaspur Central Jail in Punjab on Thursday as inmates clashed with jail authorities, allegedly due to lack of facilities. The inmates threw stones at the police personnel, vandalized the premises and also allegedly resorted to arso while trying to set the premises on fire, reports said.

Officials said five police officers, including a Station House Officer (SHO), and four prisoners were injured during the clashes. Late Thursday evening after more than eight hours, the situation was finally under control, they said.

Footage shared on social media showed some people, believed to be prisoners, standing on the roof of the prison building throwing rocks and stones as thick plumes of black smoke billowed from the building.

5 police officers, including SHO, were injured

According to police, clashes broke out between inmates and prison staff over an issue around 11 a.m. on Thursday morning. The police personnel guarding the jail rushed to control the situation but were met with stones and bricks hurled by the irate inmates.

Five constables, including an SHO, were injured in stone pelting by inmates, while four inmates sustained injuries in retaliatory action by security personnel, they said, adding that all the injured are undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital Gurdaspur.

The injured policemen were identified as Yoddha Singh, Havildar Baljinder Singh, ASI Jagdeep Singh, Manoj Kumar (a jail employee) and Dhariwal police station SHO Mandeep Mangotra. The injured prisoners are; Javed Ehmand, Gurvinder Singh, Harsh and Vishal, police said.

What caused the collision?

Giving details, a senior police official said there was an altercation three days ago between prison staff and some inmates who complained about poor prison facilities, security and poor treatment of prisoners.

“On Thursday morning, there was a scuffle between a group of prisoners and a guard, which soon escalated and clashes broke out between police personnel and prisoners,” said DGP (Law and Order) Gurinder Singh Dhillon.

The DGP said the rioting inmates broke into the prison barracks, climbed onto the roof of the building and set it on fire, adding that the prison barracks were damaged during the incident.

The senior officer added that the issue was finally resolved after almost eight hours and the prisoners had been assured that their demands would be addressed.

“The Divisional Commissioner (DC) has deputed three specialist doctors to visit the jail within the next three days and conduct medical check-ups of prisoners,” DGP Dhillon said.

Situation under control, CRPF deployed

Another senior officer said the inmates have informed him of their problems and efforts are being made to address them.

“The situation is completely under control and an investigation has been initiated to determine the cause of the incident,” said ADGP (Prison) Arunpal Singh.

The ADGP said strict action will be taken against those involved in vandalizing the prison premises.

Meanwhile, Gurdaspur police have sought the help of police personnel from neighboring areas such as Pathankot, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, Batala and Tarn Taran to control the situation in the jail, officials said.

A CRPF contingent has also been deployed at Gurdaspur Central Jail following the clashes, they said.
