Delhi shivers as Mercury dips to 4 degrees, dense fog affects flights and train services; Check IMD forecast

New Delhi: Delhi woke up to another chilly day as the mercury dropped to a chilling 4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. The drop in temperatures has led to several flights and trains being delayed or canceled due to reduced visibility, causing inconvenience to travelers. Delhiites are bracing themselves for the harsh weather conditions. The cold wave has gripped the city and temperatures are continuously dropping below normal. The biting cold is the result of the prevailing northwest wind that blows over the region.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday are likely to be around 4 degrees Celsius and 17 degrees Celsius. The weather department also predicted that a short break in the cold wave is unlikely and the dense fog could continue for another two to four days. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Wednesday and Thursday due to cold wave conditions and denser fog. Yellow alarm was given on Friday and Saturday due to dense fog.

According to the MeT department, fog is considered 'shallow' when visibility is up to 500 metres. 'Moderate' fog occurs when visibility is a maximum of 200 meters. Because visibility is a maximum of 50 meters, the fog is categorized as 'dense'. It is categorized as 'very close' when visibility is less than 50 meters.
