The truck went up in flames at 3.45pm on Friday, forcing the blocking of all outbound lanes of the West Gate Freeway near Bolt Bridge, Docklands in Melbourne's east.

The person, who has not been identified at this time, is believed to have been injured after shrapnel exploded from the truck while the truck was on fire.

Thick plumes of black smoke billowed from the white truck, bringing traffic to a standstill.

Hundreds of motorists driving home from work along the highway have been caught in traffic chaos as a result of the incident.

Vehicles have been backed all the way onto the Monash Freeway from the Domain Tunnel, causing a traffic delay of more than 55 minutes.

Motorists traveling on the highway towards West Gate Bridge will be diverted to two lanes on the far left leading to CityLink and Todd Road.
