Whoopi Goldberg is backtracking on her own prison sentence

During the Popular topics On Wednesday, March 6, the panel pulled the following talking point from a sparkly “HT” bag dropped from the ceiling as Goldberg read from a piece of paper: “Would You Rather Hike the Appalachian Trail Yourself or Splurge? six months in prison?”
After Joy Behar said she “would rather watch Netflix,” Alyssa Farrah Griffin And Sunny Hostin opted for the Appalachian Trail (which Behar called “a stupid choice”), Sara Haines said she’d rather go to jail as long as she’s not in the gene pop.
Goldberg, 68, then weighed in and joked, “Well, I’ve done both.”

Desperate for more details, Behar asked, “When were you in jail?” Goldberg responded, “I’ll tell you about it.”
The show later went on a commercial break and when it returned, Goldberg took the time to clarify her alleged stint behind bars.
“I don’t want people to panic,” said the EGOT winner. “There are jokes. If you say, “Yeah, maybe I did the Appalachian Trail and went to jail,” don’t get it twisted. I’m a humorist, okay?”
Then she discouraged anyone from finding information about it.
“Stop looking it up,” she joked. “That’s what I know is happening, correct? People are watching: ‘When did she go to jail?’ You’ll search until the cows come home, darling.’
A brief dig reveals that Goldberg was arrested on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley in May 1985 during a protest against racial policies in South Africa. She and then-Berkeley Mayor Gus Newport were taken into custody along with a dozen others for blocking access to the headquarters. Associated press syndicated article about The New York Times.
She appeared in Berkeley Municipal Court and was later “released after signing a pledge to appear June 6 on a charge of blocking a public entrance.”
