Two dead and seven missing as boat capsizes in Bihar’s Saryu River

Officials said they fear the seven missing people may also have drowned. However, rescue efforts will continue throughout the night.

Sarah: Two persons were killed and seven others are missing after a boat carrying them capsized in the Saryu river in Bihar’s Saran district, officials said. Nine people managed to swim to shore, while the bodies of two women were fished out, they said.

Officials said they fear the seven missing people may also have drowned. However, rescue efforts will continue throughout the night.

Saran District Magistrate Aman Samir told PTI, “The incident took place around 6.30 pm when a boat with 18 people on board drowned in the Saryu river near Matiyar Ghat in Manjhi block.”

“A rescue operation has been launched and we are trying to identify the deceased,” he said, adding that further investigations are on to determine the cause of the incident.

This was the second major boat capsizing incident in the state in recent memory.

On September 14, more than 15 children were feared drowned after a boat carrying them capsized in the Bagmati River in Muzaffarpur district. The incident took place when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was in the district to review the progress of various ongoing projects.
