Police have confirmed that she is an 83-year-old British citizen, but her name has yet to be released.

Officials said today she died at the Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in the island capital Arrecife.

The tragic accident happened just after 9am on Wednesday and she is believed to have died later that day.

Local reports said witnesses told investigators that the driver of the bus, owned by a private company but operating a public transport service, had been traveling “too fast.”

But there is no official confirmation of this claim yet.

A local official said: “A woman hit by a bus in Lanzarote has been taken to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital with serious multiple injuries.

“The first alert was received at 9.08am on Wednesday stating that a road traffic accident had occurred in the municipality of Teguise and one person had been injured.”

It was not clear this morning whether the tourist was alone or accompanied by family or friends when she was hit.

Local police have launched an investigation and will question the bus driver as part of the investigation.

His vehicle is also expected to be examined to rule out any mechanical defects.
