A young boy has been seriously injured after being kicked in the head by a horse along a walkway in one of Sydney's largest parks, in harrowing scenes.

Four ambulance crews, including a specialist medical team, rushed to the scene of the accident in Centennial Park shortly after 1pm on Wednesday.

Harrowing photos show a five-year-old boy lying on a stretcher, surrounded by ambulance personnel.

He was intubated and rushed to Sydney Children's Hospital Randwick under a police escort.

It is understood a family was walking their horse when their child was kicked in the head.

A heavy police presence cordoned off the Centennial Park Loop while the boy was treated at the scene and transported from the location.

NSW Police have referred questions about the incident to Ambulance NSW.

The boy's condition is believed to be serious but stable.

The Centennial Parklands course is a popular spot for riders.

More to come.
