McGregor hasn't fought in two and a half years since his devastating defeat to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264, in July 2021, when he suffered a seriously broken leg.

A comeback fight with Michael Chandler has been in the works for over a year, with the two clashing on the most recent season of The Ultimate Fighter.

Despite his time off, the former UFC doubles champion remains the biggest draw in the UFC, with a host of competitors eager for a clash.

And now he has been summoned to battle by Ilia Topuria, who took the initiative the challenge before his UFC featherweight championship fight against Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 298.

Topuria is backing himself to beat Volkanovski and has his sights set on a showdown with the Irishman in the Spanish capital.

He said on The MMA O'clock: “Conor McGregorthat's the fight I'm looking for.

“He has a great fight with Mike Chandler.

“If he doesn't get beat up, he'll happily share the Octagon with me.

“Maybe in the UFC Spain. We're both from Europe, and he can go back home and say to his wife, 'Honey, take out the red panties. Topuria kept us rich.”

The Spanish fighter further mentioned the timing of the event, saying: “Of course it's going to happen in 2024…

'When? I don't know, maybe at the end of this year.

'And where? I hope it will happen in Madrid [at] the Santiago Bernabeu stadium…

“The stadium is ready to host events.

'You can close the roof. Which can [cover the grass].

“They made it specifically for events so it would be one of the biggest ticket sellers in the UFC history.”

The Bernabau Stadium has recently undergone a £500 million revamp, with the LaLiga champions investing in a retractable roof and a 360-degree video screen stretching across the entire ground.
