A CAR driver cheated death when a two-ton roof was torn off a former Methodist chapel – missing his car by a second.

Around 6pm on Sunday, half of the roof flew off when the wind came under a temporary membrane and split it in two.

The locals told of an evening storm drama which closed Westgate Road, in the nearby village of Belton Doncasterin both directions.

Darren Johnson, 55, was converting the former church and trolleybus museum into a private home for himself.

He said: “The waterproof membrane and wood were taken off, just missed a car and went to the next door.

“It was an old roof and it still fell off.

'It's historic.

“We were afraid that the facade would crack and that the side walls would collapse.”

Forecasters are now warning the British to brace themselves Storm Jocelyn – which will bring storms of 120 km per hour from tomorrow.
