‘Heroic’: PM Modi hails Navy’s operation in rescuing sailors from merchant ships

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised the Indian Navy’s successful execution of an operation to free a merchant ship from the clutches of pirates in the North Arabian Sea as “heroic.” Speaking at the 58th Conference of DGPs and IGPs, Prime Minister Modi also referred to the success of India’s first solar mission vessel Aditya L1 and said it is a testament to India’s strength and the prowess of Indian scientists.

“Two days ago, the Indian Navy completed a highly successful heroic operation. When word came that a merchant ship was in distress, the Indian Navy and Naval Commandos swung into action,” he said.

The Prime Minister said there were 21 sailors on the ship, 15 of whom were Indians. The ship was about 2,000 km away from the Indian coast.

He said the Navy rescued all the sailors from danger.

“The Indian sailors (after being rescued) praised the bravery of the commandos and raised the slogan ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’,” he said.

On January 5, the Indian Navy’s elite naval commandos rescued all 21 crew members, including 15 Indians, from a bulk carrier after boarding a warship during a swift operation in the North Arabian Sea that followed after about five to six armed pirates had tried to hijack the ship. During the Aditya L1 mission, Modi said the spacecraft reached its destination, the L1 point, about 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, from where it will study the wonders of the Sun, uninterrupted by eclipses and occultations.

“This is the place where Aditya L1 will have a clear view of the sun. This will greatly help scientific research such as our moon mission,” he said.

Another milestone for its space program, India’s first solar mission craft Aditya L1 reached its destination on January 6 from where it will orbit the Sun and study the wonders of our star, uninterrupted by eclipses and occultations.

The ISRO’s latest achievement came months after the success of Chandrayaan-3, where the space agency accomplished the challenging soft landing of the spacecraft on the lunar surface.
