Hyderabad: India will look to build on their 16 consecutive home series wins and make it 17 when Rohit Sharma's men take on England in the first of five Tests at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. The last time India lost a Test series at home to England was in 2012, when the visitors were led by the now retired Alastair Cook. England have arrived in the country just three days before the first Test and have already faced criticism from some quarters for not playing test matches in a bid to adapt to the conditions. Instead, England held a pre-series camp in Abu Dhabi.

Lots of spin is expected from both sides as the pitch is likely to help slow bowlers. England have already announced their XI with three specialist spinners, including a debutant. The duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja will be seen for India. However, there will be a toss between Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav for the third spinners.

England have already had a taste of what these two can do on their previous visits here, and they will be worried, especially about Ashwin. The 37-year-old still retains the burning enthusiasm of a 17-year-old to keep improving his craft and since 2012, Ashwin has taken 283 wickets from 46 Tests. Meanwhile, India will be without the services of Virat Kohli, who withdrew from the first two matches due to personal reasons.

Head-to-head

India and England have played a total of 131 times in Tests, with the former winning just 31 times. England have won 50 matches, while 50 matches ended in draws. A total of 64 Tests were played between both teams in India, of which the hosts won 22. England won 14 matches in India, while the remaining 28 ended in draws.
