James Cameron – director of the 1997 blockbuster Titanic who has visited the wreck more than 30 times – has commented on the Titan submarine disaster.

On Thursday, June 22, four days after the underwater hull went missing while touring Titanic’s North Atlantic site, OceanGate announced that all five passengers were dead. First Coast Guard District Commander Behind admin. John Maugers said the debris found off the coast of Canada is consistent with a “catastrophic implosion” of the submarine.

“People in the community were very concerned about this submarine,” 68-year-old Cameron told ABC News Thursday, echoing criticism from many who didn’t believe the Titan was safe enough for this mission. (Prior to this disaster, the submarine had explored the wreckage of the Titanic twice, both times with problems, though no one was injured.)

“Some of the top players in the deep immersion tech community even wrote letters to the company, saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it should be certified,” said Cameron, who is a diving expert and was good friends with Titan passenger Paul-Henri Nargeolet – noticed.

“I am struck by the similarity of the disaster to the Titanic itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned of ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result. Cameron shared. (The filmmaker included footage of his visits to the wreck site in the epic film, which won a historic 11 Oscars at the 1998 ceremony.)

“For us it is a similar tragedy where warnings were not heeded,” he continued. “To take place in exactly the same location with all the diving happening around the world, I think it’s just amazing. It’s really quite surreal.”

Cameron went on to mourn his friend “PH,” calling the French explorer a “legendary dive pilot” he had known for 25 years. “That he died tragically in this way is almost impossible for me to process,” said the Canadian. (Nargeolet, for its part, had visited the Titanic wreck 37 times.)

Nargeolet was one of five passengers believed to have perished on the Titan. OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, father-son duo Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood, and British billionaire Harding were also on board.

Harding’s stepson, Brian Szaszmade headlines earlier this week for attending a Blink-182 concert while crews searched for the missing submarine.

“It may be unpleasant to be here but my family would like me to be with the Blink-182 show because it is my favorite band and music helps me through difficult times,” 37-year-old Szasz wrote on Monday, 19 June via Facebook. attendance at the event was criticized by many on social media including Cardi B – plus his own mother, who insisted he remove it – Szasz defended his decision to go to the concert.

“I went to a Blink 182 concert to deal with it instead of sitting at home and watching the news,” he said in response to Cardi B’s criticism.
