It’s an age-old debate that divides households – where should tomato ketchup be kept?

While many argue that the spicy sauce should go in the cupboard, others think it stays fresh longer in the fridge.

But hopefully to put an end to the argument, Heinz has revealed that the spice should be kept in the fridge – but many fans aren’t convinced.

On Twitter, the food giant said yesterday: “FYI: ketchup. go. in the. refrigerator!!!’.

Hundreds of fans replied saying they are keeping it in the closet and won’t change their method.

Olivia Lennon of Heinz Tomato Ketchup told FEMAIL, “There was always only one right answer, and we are happy to share with Heinz Tomato Ketchup enthusiasts in the UK that our ketchup should be in the fridge.

While we know that many fans of Heinz Tomato Ketchup have kept their ketchups in the cupboard, we recommend refrigerating them after opening.

“This is the best way to preserve the delicious spicy taste of our Heinz Tomato Ketchup that you know and love.”

Ketchup can be left on the shelf until opened.

However, since tomato has a high acidity, once opened it should be kept in the refrigerator so as not to affect the taste.

Ddespite expert opinion, dozens have signed up and explained that they are unwilling to change.

According to the sauce makers, 41 percent of Britons have wrongly kept their Heinz Tomato Ketchup in the cupboard, not in the fridge.

“I’ve never kept ketchup in the fridge. In the closet or on the counter,” said one fan.

‘No, it doesn’t. You keep to the production and I take care of the consumption,” said another.

“Heinz doesn’t even know where to store their product,” a third wrote.

“I just carry it in my pocket. You never know when you’ll come across a snack that needs some ketchup,” another joked.
