A MAJOR supermarket gives out free pastries if you spend just 1 cent.

Bargain hunters are flocking to Lidl stores across the country to get their hands on the tasty treats with a simple trick.

The budget supermarket offers the free snack to all customers who use their loyalty app.

All shoppers have to do is scan their Pluskaart app at the checkout.

It could mean claiming a free pretzel or cookie, usually worth 39 cents each, up to a slice of pizza, usually worth 69 cents.

TikTok account Costoflivingcrisistips tried out the frugal trick earlier today.

They explained: “Do your Lidl shopping as normal, or if you're a cheap skater like me, just buy a banana for 14p.

“You actually take what you buy to the cash register, pay and scan your app.

“I won a pain au chocolat. Then I went and got that and took it to the cash register, scanned it and it was free.

“So basically I got a pain au chocolate and a banana for 14 cents. Happy Days.”

How does LidlPlus work?

Lidl Plus is a virtual savings card that you need to download Lidl's free app to claim.

The Plus card app lets you unlock coupons when you reach your spending goals each month, and it's a great way to save on Lidl's already low prices.

Once this coupon appears, you only have seven days to use it, so you'll want to act quickly.

What you can use it for also depends on the availability of products in your local store.

And you can't use it online either, as Lidl doesn't offer deliveries, so you'll have to go to your nearest Lidl store – use the search tool to find out where that is.

However, it's not the only time you can claim freebies at the discount store, as you can also get a free cookie worth 39 cents on your birthday.

A Lidl spokesperson said: “Just in case you thought your Lidl shop couldn't get any better, shop from 1 to 29 February, scan your Lidl Plus card at checkout and win a free bakery item!

“Just check your app after your store and you'll see your Super Spin wheel ready.
