Man causes horror on London bus after threatening passengers 'with unknown substance' – as police strip and arrest suspect – The Sun
Police have arrested a suspect who threatened London bus passengers with an “unknown substance”.
A tense standoff ensued in Croydon when the man refused to leave the busy bus on London Road in Thornton Heath at 10.30pm.
The man, 44, boarded the bus in Brixton and reportedly started smoking, prompting passengers to intervene.
The situation quickly escalated when he began threatening passengers with an unknown substance.
Emergency services, including officers dressed in specialized blue chemicals to takerushed to the scene in Croydon.
Dozens of police, firefighters and ambulance crews were seen at the scene where four double-decker buses were lined up on the closed road.
However, police later revealed that the substance was not found to be harmful – and the man was arrested.
Photos show an officer dressing the men in orange jumpsuits while they were surrounded by a huge blue tarpaulin.
The man was then strapped to a stretcher and taken to hospital for medical examination.
A Met Police A spokesperson said: “Police responded to calls to London Road, Thornton Heath shortly after 10.30pm last night.
“A man had threatened bus passengers with an unknown substance.
“Nobody was taken hostage. The man made threats and everyone else on the bus immediately got off. The substance was not thrown.
“Shortly before midnight, the 44-year-old man was arrested for affray. The substance did not appear to be harmful.
“Taser was discharged before his arrest and officers believe the man had taken it drugs. He was taken to hospital as a precaution.
“His condition is not believed to be life-threatening.”
