And in the near future, even more talented prodigies could arrive at Erik ten Hag's doorstep.

According to TyC SportsMan Utd are in the hunt for South American quartet Franco Mastantuono, Aaron Anselmino, Ian Subiare and Tomas Parmo.

Attacking midfielder Mastantuono, 16, made history in River Plate's 3-0 win over Excursionistas on Thursday as he became the second-youngest goalscorer in Argentine football history.

The teenage prodigy scored at the age of 16 years and 177 days, just like Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero.

His achievement is only eclipsed by Argentine icon Diego Maradona, who scored for Argentinos Juniors at the age of 16 years and five days.

And although he has been linked with Man Utd, Man City, Real Madrid and Barcelona, he delivered a loving message for River Plate after his historic goal.

He said: “Since I arrived at River in 2019, I kissed the club's badge every time I scored a goal. It was the club that put food on the table when I was little.

“It was a great emotion (when I scored), a lot of things went through my mind, it made me want to cry.

The centre-back has played just 296 minutes of senior football but is already attracting interest from some of the best clubs in the world.

Winger Subiare, 17, has attracted attention with his three goals in 20 appearances for the Argentina U17s.

He made his debut for River Plate last week as the team recorded back-to-back wins.

And Independiente midfielder Tomas Parmo, 16, is another young talent being considered by Man Utd as they look to emulate rivals Man City in acquiring young South American players.

Pep Guardiola's men signed Julian Alvarez for his breakout tournament at the 2022 World Cup.

And last month they signed River Plate Claudio Echeverri, 18, for around £12.5 million on a contract until 2028.
