Captained by Ryan Giggs, the squad also included top prospects such as Craig Bellamy, Aaron Ramsey and Daniel Sturridge.

However, Team GB crashed out of the tournament in the quarter-finals after losing to South Korea on penalties.

And Richards has revealed that the sex-crazed lifestyle of athletes in the Olympic Village may have played a role.

During the London Games, athletes from all over the world lived close together.

As a result, some decided to partake in everything on offer, from the free food to photos with celebrities.

But it was a “huge room full of condoms” that really caught the attention of Richards and the athletes.

And speaking to Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer, he admitted he was “on fire” during the tournament.

Richards told Rest is football podcast: “It was the party of all parties. You've got all different athletes, all different types in there.

“This is what I imagine going to college, sitting in hallways and sharing a room. I was with Daniel Sturridge.

“Kobe Bryant was there, people were taking pictures with him, we were standing around exploring the village. I went up to say, 'legend, is it possible to take a photo,' and he said, 'No, not now!'

'I've never felt so stupid in my entire life. He had no idea who Big Meeks was!

“We were there for three nights, we went to train, came back to the village, those three nights we were there until four in the morning.

“You've got different campuses, Team GB in one block, Brazil, France, all these countries, and there's a huge big room full of condoms!

“It was like what, clearly promoting safe sex, and honest to God, I was on fire.

“I was really on fire, to be honest. I was a little slimmer, a little ripped, a little skinnier, it was summer and I was walking around with my top off.

“There were several gold medals. one of the best times of my life, it was incredible.

This prompted Alan Shearer to wittily reply: “No wonder you got beaten a lot on penalties, you were absolutely devastated!”
