The Duke of Edinburgh has described feeling a “weight of expectation” as he took over his father’s title in a rare TV interview.

A year after taking over the role, Edward admitted he still doesn’t know where to sit in a room when his title is written in a name place.

In a rare television interview, The Duke gardener Alan Titchmarsh told ITV’s Love Your Weekend program about the challenge of taking over the role from his ‘extraordinary’ father, Prince Philip, who died in 2021 aged 99.

“It was a huge privilege, but it also came with a lot of expectations,” said Edward, as he celebrated his 60th birthday.

“I mean, there’s an awful lot of legacy in that title and everything my father did, especially if you don’t inherit it, this is a choice.”

As he got used to his new title, Edward said, “It’s just the strangest and strangest feeling.

“You walk into a room and, especially now, there are name tags on a card and I still look around and say, ‘Yeah, but where am I sitting?’

During the interview, Edward praised his father for being “brilliant with people,” even though sometimes it “didn’t necessarily come across that way.”

“He always encouraged everyone,” he said. ‘You actually had to get to know him.

‘Everyone always commented on my dad’s sense of humor, but he just did that.

‘He was just an extraordinary man. He was the Prince Albert of our time. He had an extraordinary mind. He loved design, he loved innovation, he was brilliant with all kinds of people.”

The duke said his father was much more comfortable talking about the organizations he supported and “refused to talk about himself.”

Edward continued, “Never ask him to blow his own trumpet, he would never do that.

“You had to get him talking about the organizations he supported, and what he had done in connection with them, and that’s how you got around it.

“And for heaven’s sake don’t say, ‘What are you feeling?’ Because he would never have shared something like that.”

Edward also said his wife Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, is his “rock”, adding: “I feel incredibly lucky that I found Sophie and that she found me.”

He and Sophie, 59, have been married since 1999 after meeting two years earlier during a promotional shoot for the Prince Edward Summer Challenge.

Asked what he does to unwind and relax, the Duke said he enjoys “getting out in the countryside.

‘The garden, dogs,’ he continued: ‘The garden is the most wonderful place to do all kinds of things.

“It can also be a great place to get away and think about things.”

The Duke held a series of engagements with the Duchess of Edinburgh earlier this week ahead of the milestone birthday.

He was presented with a Leeds Rhinos rugby shirt with ‘HRH 60’ on the back to mark the date during a visit to Headingley Stadium in Leeds on Friday.

Prince Edward noticed the detail on the back and told his wife: “Yours is more subtle than mine.”

He told the young players: ‘Thank you very much. I really need to be reminded.’

Sophie then paid a tearful tribute to Edward at the end of the Community Sport and Recreation Awards, saying he was ‘the best dad, the most loving husband and still my best friend’ and that she was ‘so proud of the man’ . He is’.

On Tuesday, the Duke and Duchess visited an amateur boxing club and community church in Stafford.

The downsized working monarchy is under increasing pressure, with some senior members of the royal family banned from public duties.

Charles, 75, is undergoing treatment for cancer and the Princess of Wales is recovering from abdominal surgery.

It comes as Edward praised Prince Philip as an “extraordinary spirit” as he shared his favorite memories of his father in a rare interview to mark his birthday.

Lauren Sanchez threw her billionaire fiancé, Jeff Bezos, an out-of-this-world 60th birthday party with an A-list guest list that included everyone from Kim Kardashian to Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom. 

The private bash was hosted at the couple’s Beverly Hills mansion with a ‘celestial space-age’ theme, a nod to the Amazon founder’s Blue Origin aerospace company. 

Sanchez, 54, channeled her inner Jessica Rabbit in a custom red Swarovski crystal gown by designer Laura Basci, likely to the delight of Bezos, who turned 60 on January 12. 

The dress required more than 800 hours of hand-beading, according to a press release from the brand. 

The bride-to-be paired the figure-hugging frock with a $4,995 crystal-incrusted rocket ship bag by Judith Leiber. 

Sanchez proudly showed off her look on Instagram the day after the party, sharing behind-the-scenes photos of herself striking a pose in her dressing room ahead of the bash.  

‘Getting ready is sometimes the best part of the night. Thank you @laurabasci for creating this incredible dress for such a special evening,’ she wrote in the caption. 

Oprah Winfrey, Bill Gates, Kendell Jenner, Hailey Bieber, and Jay-Z and Beyoncé were among the hundreds of guests spotted at the lavish birthday party, a source told The Sun. 

Sanchez went all out for her husband-to-be’s birthday and set up a replica of Bezos’ first Amazon office with his original chair, the insider shared. 

Guests were served ‘everything from caviar to McDonald’s, a tribute to the billionaire’s first job when he was 16.

The source added that ‘photography was banned at the event’ and attendees had to ‘put their phones in pouches’ when they arrived.

Many guests confirmed their attendance with posts and comments on Instagram, including Kardashian, Kris Jenner, Ivanka Trump, Heidi Klum, Jewel, Kathy Hilton, and her daughters, Paris Hilton and Nicky Hilton Rothschild. 

‘You are the brightest gift to Jeff. Happy Birthday. We had a blast celebrating with you,’ Klum, 50, wrote on Sanchez’s post. 

‘You look so gorgeous in that red dress!!! What a fun beautiful evening,’ Kathy Hilton, 64, added. ‘Sooo fun last night!!’ her daughter Nicky agreed. 

Nicky, 40, and her older sister, Paris, 42, both dazzled in silver. The former had on a bedazzled spaghetti strap dress paired with a star tiara, while the latter wore a long-sleeve gown made of laser-cut stars.  

‘Such a fun night,’ Trump, 42, commented, adding rocket and space emojis. 

The former White House senior adviser was joined by her husband, Jared Kushner, 43, whom she posed for photos with at the party.

The couple flew to Los Angeles from their home on Indian Creek Island near Miami, Florida, where Bezos recently purchased not one but two properties.  

Trump revealed her black and gold beaded halter gown was a vintage Roberto Cavalli design featured in his Fall/Winter 2006 collection. 

She posted a few solo shots of herself modeling the look, including footage of herself blowing a kiss at the camera. 

‘Last night was so fun! U looked amazingggggggg,’ Kardashian, 43, gushed. 

‘Right back at you!’ Trump responded. 

Jewel, 49, matched Sanchez in a red sequin dress by Yousef Al Jasmi, although her frock was a long-sleeve mini dress with feathered cuffs. 

The singer shared photos of herself posing with the host, as well as a group shot of herself with the Hilton sisters and U Beauty founder Tina Chen Craig. 

‘Set donut down, took (small) break from yoga pants and danced!’ she captioned the party pictures. 

Perry, 39, took the space theme seriously and posted snapshots of herself dressed as a glamourous alien complete with antennas and pointy ears. 

The E.T. singer posed for pictures at her home with her fiancé, Bloom, 47, who also sported prosthetics to turn himself into an extraterrestrial. 

‘Spaced out and starry eyed,’ she wrote in the caption.

‘Look who’s turning 60,’ Sanchez wrote in the caption. ‘Happy birthday, baby. Today is another day where your laughter fills our home, and that smile of yours lights up every room.

‘Happy birthday baby,’ she captioned the image of herself her rocking a shag hairdo complete with blunt bangs. 

Sanchez revealed on her Instagram Stories that they rang in her future husband’s birthday in Paris ahead of his party. 

She posted a picture of the stunning view of the Eiffel Tower from their hotel window, which also included a close-up of a bouquet of white roses. 

‘Best morning with the birthday boy,’ she wrote. 

The getaway came less than a month after Sanchez celebrated her 54th birthday aboard Bezos’s $500 million mega-yacht off the coast of St. Barts on December 19. 

It’s unclear when the couple started dating, but their romance was first exposed by the National Enquirer in January 2019, while they were both married to other people.

Soon after, the mogul divorced Mackenzie Scott, his wife of more than 25 years and the mother of his four children, while the former journalist left her husband, Patrick Whitesell, executive chairman of Endeavor, the parent company of WME talent agency. 

Bezos and Sanchez made their first public appearance together in May of that year, and four years later, they got engaged in May 2023. 

The bride-to-be opened up about the moment Bezos asked her to marry him in an interview featured in the November issue of Vogue.

She recalled how he popped the question on his yacht after they enjoyed a romantic dinner under the stars together.

Bezos hid the pink diamond engagement ring under her pillow, and she admitted that she almost ‘blacked out’ when she saw it. 

Sanchez said they were in the early stages of planning their nuptials, noting that she was more focused on the billionaire’s 60th birthday party.

The star appeared on Woman’s Hour alongside presenter Emma Barnett to talk about Doctor Who on the show’s 60th anniversary.

The popular science fiction franchise returns to screens on Saturday to mark an impressive anniversary milestone with David Tennant reprising his role as the Doctor.

Although Jodie won’t appear in the 60th anniversary special episode, the first of which airs Saturday, the star made history after becoming the first female Time Lord in 2017.

She portrayed the eponymous Time Lord on screen for four years, leaving the science fiction series in her final episode in October 2022.

The series was expected to be an instant hit as it brought the show into the modern era, but the highly anticipated episodes were widely criticized.

It is said that her tenure struggled to live up to the hype and her potential, as the show’s script was criticized many times over the years.

But her close relationship with her companion Yaz kept viewers glued to the screens as the pair were shipped together early on, as many suspected a budding romance.

Jodie recently starred alongside Bella Ramsey in the second series of BBC’s Time.

While series one saw Stephen Graham and Sean Bean take on the lead roles as a conflicted prison officer and a former teacher consumed by guilt and demons from his own past, series two features an all-female cast and focuses on a women’s prison.

Before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as Doctor in the upcoming 2023 Christmas special, fans will be treated to three special episodes to celebrate the 2023 Christmas special. 60th anniversary of the show, with David Tennant returning as the Time Lord alongside his former companion Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate.

The first special, titled The Star Beast, will air on BBC One on November 25 and will be followed by Wild Blue Yonder on December 2 and The Giggle on December 9.

Appears on BBC Breakfast on Thursday in a pre-recorded interview with David said of his return: ‘Doctor Who, if you’re attached to it, you’re attached to it. The fact that I would start working on it again, kind of full-time, even if only for a short time, was something I could never have imagined.’

As Russell T. Davies revealed his plans: “I’ve always believed that all this show has to be is it has to be good, it has to be fun, it has to be well cast, it has to be brilliant, but that’s really missing from the schedules at the moment . I can’t say I’m confident, but I’m proud of what we’ve created and I hope it works.”

On Ncuti taking on the role, he said: “I have had a glimpse of what Ncuti can do and it is very exciting. He has such great energy, he’s inventive, he’s smart, he’s fast, he’s funny.

“It’s really exciting to have such a brilliant new Doctor on the way and I’ll be glued to every episode.”
