A heated debate broke out on Good Morning Britain as guests clashed over whether motherhood is ruining women’s careers.

Broadcaster and mother-of-two Narinder Kaur said that ‘mothers need to be at home’ because they ‘can’t have both’, while fashion designer and mother-of-three Savannah Miller argued that women ‘can do both’.

The debate comes after singer Lily Allen admitted having children ‘ruined’ her career and rejected the idea that women can ‘have it all’.

Agreeing with the Smile singer, Narinder said that a woman having children and a successful career is ‘a myth’.

She added: “I want to pat Lily Allen on the back for being completely honest. I think she has triggered a lot of mothers who believe in the myth that you can have it all, but you can’t.

Broadcaster and mother-of-two Narinder Kaur said ‘mothers need to be at home’ because they ‘can’t have both’ in GMB debate

‘You absolutely cannot have a successful career and raise children. It’s a lie because if you want to be a fully present mother and meet their physical and emotional needs, you have to be a stay-at-home mom.”

Savannah disagreed, saying that women can balance motherhood and career, but they must “make sacrifices.”

She said: ‘I don’t believe we can have everything, we have to make sacrifices. However, it is very harmful to tell your daughters that they will have to choose between being a mother or having a career.

‘Also telling your sons that this is what you expect from your wife or girlfriend when they give birth – that they are just going to put their careers on the shelf and yours is more important – is, quite frankly, disgusting.

‘I want to raise boys who go out into the world to support women. Why is a man’s career given more value than a woman’s? I do not feel like it.’

The fashion designer revealed that she was a ‘flexible worker’ when she had children and had people around her who could help.

She said: ‘I had people from my village help me when I couldn’t get to the school gate and I would put my children to bed every night, read them a story and go back to my laptop. It is very damaging to tell women that their careers do not have the same value as men’s.’

Narinder disagreed and said, “We don’t have to be Superwoman, we have to be mothers at home with our children. Unfortunately, this world is not made for two working parents and as a mother I believe that the mother should be at home with the children.’

Viewers rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to leave their thoughts on the controversial topic.

One person said: ‘Lily Allen’s comments highlight the need for more discussion and support around the challenges parents face in the workplace. It’s not about ‘having it all’, it’s about finding a balance that works for you.’

Another said: ‘How is this even a debate? A career isn’t really a sacrifice for having children. Have some damn perspective.”

Someone else said: ‘It’s impossible to be 100% committed to a job and 100% committed to raising children.

‘Women seem to be obsessed with proving they can do anything, but they can’t! I am a stay at home mom and am ashamed that I made that choice! I think your career needs to be put on hold to raise your child.”

A fourth said: ‘They don’t ruin a career, but if you are the main childcare provider, or even share equally with your partner, having children limits your ability to continue rising through the ranks!

‘I’ve often felt like I’m not giving, both at work and as a mother, the juggling guilt is real!’

The debate comes after Lily Allen admitted her two daughters ‘totally ruined’ her pop career because she chose to prioritize them over work, insisting: ‘You can’t have it all’.

The 38-year-old singer and actress said she believes women should decide whether to put their children or their careers first, saying she chose the former.

‘My children ruined my career. “I love them and they complete me, but in terms of pop stardom they’ve totally ruined it,” she told the BBC Radio Times podcast.

“I get really annoyed when people say you can have it all, because honestly, you can’t.

The 38-year-old singer and actress said she believes women should decide whether to put their children or their careers first, saying she chose the former (L-R: Lily Allen, daughters Marnie Rose Cooper and Ethel Cooper, and actor husband David Harbor)

‘Some people choose their career over their children and that’s their prerogative, but my parents were quite absent when I was little.

“I feel like it left some nasty scars that I don’t want to repeat on mine.”

Lily’s father is actor Keith Allen, 70, who left her film producer mother Alison Owen, 63, when Lily was four.

Lily has now said that she has ‘chosen to take a step back and focus on my children’ and she is glad she did because ‘they are quite versatile.’

The Smile singer shares two daughters Ethel Mary, 12, and Marnie Rose, 10, with her builder ex-husband Sam Cooper, 45, but released her last studio album No Shame in 2018.

Lily now lives in New York with her children and new husband, Stranger Things star David Harbour, 48, who she married in 2020 and has turned her hand to acting.

Many of us know how excessive heat can damage our hair, but what about when we sleep?

Trichologist and Definitely collagen Hair expert Eva Proudman shared how we can damage our hair at night without realizing it, and tips to combat it.

Tossing and turning at night causes friction and heat between your hair and pillow, which can damage the hair and lead to breakage,” she explained.

“The best way to protect your hair from friction and damage is to tie it back instead of putting it up. Tying your hair back can indeed cause pulling, but if done correctly it can minimize friction overnight.”

Other experts from Absolute Collagen came up with a list of ways to protect your hair while it rests.

This way you can wake up every morning without lint and breakage.

SSLIP ON A SILK OR SATIN PILLOWCASE

For the restless sleepers, a silk or satin pillowcase is a must, especially if you are typically prone to breakage.

The smooth material allows hair to glide freely, minimizing tangles, friction and frizz when tossing and turning.

Most read in Hair & Beauty

Experts noted that silk pillowcases don’t absorb oils, which means your hair won’t be stripped of all its natural oils and you can wake up to hydrated strands.

COMPLETELY DRY HAIR

According to the experts, your hair is most fragile when it’s wet, so the friction and heat you get while you sleep can increase matting and even breakage.

The best evening routine for your follicles is to wash them a few hours before bed with a nourishing shampoo and conditioner and then let them air dry.

For a faster solution, you can blow-dry the hair at a gentle temperature with a protective spray.

WRAPPING YOUR HAIR

“Similar to the benefits of a pillowcase, wrapping your locks in a silk or satin scarf can reduce friction, retain the hair’s natural moisture and even reduce the chance of split ends,” they said.

If you often wake up with dry or frizzy hair, consider sleeping in a silk or satin headscarf or shawl. If you don’t have one, wrapping your hair in loose braids before going to bed is also a great way to do it.

Plus, experts recommended that you can use this method even if you’ve had a fresh blow-dry or a hairstyle that you want to last longer.

SWAP HAIR BANDS FOR SCRUNCHIES

“If wrapping isn’t for you but you still want to protect your hair by tying it up and away from your face when you sleep, invest in soft, silk or satin scrunchies,” said an expert at Absolute Collagen.

Regular cloth ties are fine for use during the day, but things are different when you sleep.

The best option is a loose scrunchie that doesn’t cause friction or pull on your delicate hair.

TUSE A LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER OR HAIR OIL

Last but certainly not least, for those with curly, tangled, or dry hair, a leave-in conditioner or hair oil should be your best friend.

Experts suggested that if you have dry hair, you should look for a nourishing oil that contains hyaluronic acid, coconut oil or castor oil.

For fine hair, try looking for one that contains argan oil or grapeseed oil.

This is a great way to lock in moisture and revitalize your curls overnight.

Make sure you dry your hair before going to bed so it doesn't mat and cause breakage

A musician has lashed out at Qantas for damaging his $13,000 'handmade' double bass just before he was due to perform at the Perth Fringe Festival.

Mark Elton traveled from Melbourne to Perth for the gig and checked the instrument in as oversized luggage with stickers reading 'fragile' on the case.

But when the musician, aged over 30, opened the bag upon arrival, he noticed large cracks in the wood.

“Hey @qantas! Thank you for a very depressing start to my month of shows at @fringeworldperth 2024,” he posted on Instagram along with images of the damage.

'After flying into Melbourne/Perth today I opened my flight case to discover that my beautiful double bass had been destroyed beyond repair after clearly being dropped from a significant height by your baggage crew.

Mark Elton posted on his Instagram account on Monday that the damage to the instrument was excessive and “destroyed beyond repair,” writing that it needed to be replaced.

The musician, who was due to perform a month's worth of shows at the Perth Fringe festival, said the double bass looked as if it had “fallen from a significant height”, blaming baggage handlers.

'What's worse is that there has been no apology or report of an accident involving my precious instrument.

“After many years as a club member and choosing to fly with @qantas, I hope you will support me through this major emotional and financial setback.”

With a month of shows planned and no way to get a tune out of his double bass, fellow musicians supported him with WA Symphony Orchestra double bassist and luthier Andrew Tait lending him an instrument.

Qantas has since responded to the complaint and checked the CCTV footage.

TThe airline said there was no evidence of damage to the suitcase in transit, but did offer a goodwill payment.

“We know how important it is to handle all luggage, including musical instruments, with care,” Qantas said in a statement.

'We are concerned to hear that the double bass has been damaged and we have been actively investigating what has happened to our ground handling partners since we were first notified on Tuesday.'

Social media users were shocked by the photos, calling the incident “heartbreaking” for an artist.

'That's getting out of hand!!! How on earth did they do so much damage?' wrote one.

“Our instruments are our babies, I hope there is a quick and satisfying outcome,” said another.

When royal family gatherings take place out of public view, Prince Andrew is still welcome. Indeed, he would like to continue participating.

'The king will not simply drive his brother adrift. He adores his nieces [Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie]. And at least [Andrew] has not been unfaithful,” the source said. 'But a return to public life is out of the question. His legal problems haven't been resolved yet, the public doesn't want him and many people still remember his rudeness last time.'

Privately, in diplomatic circles or among the provincial lieutenants, it is rarely long before the mere mention of the Duke of York prompts an eye roll and an unflattering anecdote.

A year into the new government, new details about Prince Andrew's friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein continue to emerge with embarrassing frequency. For example, in June 2023, US court cases produced email correspondence showing that the Duke of York was still communicating with the pedophile, long after he claimed (during his disastrous Newsnight interview in 2019) to have cut off all contact.

It is precisely this potential for further surprises that makes any prospect of public rehabilitation impossible in the near future.

Royal insiders emphasize two other considerations. First, Prince Andrew remains contrite and eager to please, even though he wouldn't remain so if he were cast out of the royal fold. As one source notes, “Andrew could be much more damaging outside the circle.”

Second, there are those who fear for his mental well-being. One official, who had known him for years, was amazed at the transformation in him when they met again, describing him as “almost incoherent.”

Whether he continues to live in the Queen Mother's spacious former home, Royal Lodge, is another matter.

There will be no deportation order from the King. Contrary to reports that he wanted to give Royal Lodge to Prince William (who was certainly not looking for another move), it is more likely a matter of cost.

Royal Lodge is located outside Windsor's main security cordon and requires separate protection. The King's position, according to a source, is quite simple: his brother can either pay the annual security bill of around £1 million himself – or move within the Windsor cordon, where Prince Harry's old home, Frogmore Cottage, is available.

Since Prince Andrew doesn't have a steady private income, it may make more sense to move there. Royal officials would then attempt to secure a private tenant.

Previously, Prince Andrew's massive security bill – following his retirement from public life – was funded by his mother.

“Andrew was the weak one,” says a close family friend. “She was always protective of him and that definitely took a toll on her health in the end.”

Her heir, however, was less lenient. In 2019, Prince Andrew had announced he would be stepping back from his public duties, but just hours later he said he would still go ahead with a business visit to Bahrain.

Buckingham Palace initially did not intervene. While the Prince of Wales was on a tour of New Zealand, Prince Andrew had visited the Queen and secured her agreement to his plan. But as soon as dawn broke in New Zealand, the Duke's journey to Bahrain had most definitely begun. Prince Charles had made sure of that.

“When you get a problem like Newsnight that suddenly gets worse, you just have to be bold and fast,” said a senior Palace aide. “Charles knows that.”

For now, Prince Andrew can still be found driving around the Windsor estate for something to do. As long as he has a (limited) number of family events to shape his year, and the presence of grandchildren takes up some of his time, he maintains some kind of framework for life, albeit without clear direction.

He is fit, teetotal and still in his early sixties. He seems destined to remain an unanswered question for many years to come.

Wild weather is forecast for large parts of Australia on New Year’s Eve, with SES volunteers facing verbal abuse from frustrated residents devastated by floods.

Heavy rain, thunderstorms and large hail forecast for northern NSW and Queensland have emergency services on standby on New Year’s Eve.

A wild weather system stretched more than 1000km from Port Macquarie to Rockhampton on Sunday afternoon, with parts of Qld’s Central Highlands and Coalfields, Maranoa and Darling Downs regions worst affected.

Jonathan How, senior meteorologist at the weather bureau, urged residents to stay aware of flood warnings.

“At this stage we do not expect widespread flooding, but areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms could cause flash flooding, as well as rapid rises in creeks, rivers and storm drains,” he said.

South East Queensland area manager Tony Cooper revealed recovery crews who volunteered over Christmas had suffered abuse in the aftermath of shocking storms on the Gold Coast.

SES crews had on Sunday responded to more than 3,500 calls for help from residents since Christmas Day, when the Gold Coast, Scenic Rim and Logan counties were devastated by severe weather.

Mr Cooper said there had been cases of abuse against volunteers, many of whom had sacrificed their Christmas holidays to help affected communities.

“There have probably been specific cases, but our guys are very experienced. They are very professional and take it on the chin,” he said.

Meanwhile, Queensland Deputy Prime Minister Cameron Dick had a media event interrupted by frustrated residents after being without power for almost a week.

There was also a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds over the Northern Territory’s Gregory district.

A group of thunderstorms threatened Timber Creek and Yarralin with gusts of 90km/h recorded at Delamere Weapons Range.

High wind warnings have been issued for the Byron Coast in NSW and several coastal areas in Western Australia, including eastern and western Pilbra, Perth, Bunbury, Leeuwin, Esperance and Eucla.

Wind gusts reached 93km/h at Gympie on Saturday, while 64mm of rain fell at Cedar Pocket Dam in Queensland.

The Sunshine Coast was also lashed by rain, with Beerburrum recording 110mm in two hours and Landsborough 67mm in 30 minutes.

On the Fraser Coast, farmer Aaron Broom posted photos of cattle killed after being struck by lightning.

“A wild storm just came through our Fraser Coast property in SEQ and a lightning strike killed five cows,” Mr Broom posted on social media on Saturday.

‘I’ve never had this before, poor buggers were in the wrong place at the wrong time. I’m glad there was no more cowering in the weather.’

Crews have confirmed that four homes in the state’s southeast have been “completely destroyed” and 750 homes have suffered minor to severe damage from storms since Christmas, Deputy Prime Minister Cameron Dick told reporters in Jimboomba on Sunday.

He said there have been 3,000 calls to the state emergency service since the night of the 25th and about 18,000 people across the state are still waiting for power to be restored.

“We have crews cleaning the streets and trying to clear the debris so we can get the electrical crews in,” Mr. Dick said.

Up to 70 Defense Force veterans and retired emergency services personnel are assisting with storm cleanup efforts in south-east Queensland.

They have been deployed to the worst affected areas, including the northern Gold Coast, Tamborine Mountain and Jimboomba, to remove fallen trees, clear debris, stabilize buildings and improve access to homes.

Severe weather between Christmas Eve and Boxing Day resulted in ten deaths in Queensland and Victoria, including a nine-year-old girl who became lost in a storm drain.

NSW SES crews were kept busy, responding to 473 calls for help and carrying out six flood rescues over the Christmas weekend.

Wow! Shock horror. It’s the latest scandal to rock the royal family, turning it into a giant whodunnit.

Someone is said to have said something about the possible physical appearance of an as yet unborn prince – Harry and Meghan’s son – and the world is thrown into an ecstasy of manufactured outrage.

In the Netherlands, the name of the alleged perpetrator has appeared, accidentally and deliberately, in the Dutch version of a new book on royal mischief, and a terrible battle has been waged in the British media.

Do we have the right to call the royal family ‘racist’? Can the British public be told the truth about the blue-blooded gaffer who blurted something about royal baby Archie?

Can you handle it?

You know what: I don’t know and I don’t care. I don’t care about a monkey who said something about the possible genetic inheritance of the impending arrival of a child who is in yet another place in line for the throne, because I don’t think such speculation is even remotely racist .

It is claimed that someone has said something about the possible physical appearance of a then unborn prince – Harry and Meghan’s son Archie, writes BORIS JOHNSON

Why the epic hoo-ha? Well, I suppose this is partly because it's meant as a hoo-ha, not least by tripe-mongering author Omid Scobie (pictured)

Asking such questions in anticipation of a happy event is human nature.

It is one of life’s great joys and mysteries that in the womb we have no real idea what our children will look like.

We can see their shapes on the amazing prenatal scans, and we can hear the heartbeats; but despite all the heartbreaking details of the images, the fingers, the toes, the thumb in the mouth, they are still tantalizing. We cannot be sure which traits the babies will visibly inherit.

Every family is the same. As soon as a baby is born, and with each week that passes, we pore over him and pathetically look for signs of family continuity. Whose nose is this? Whose eyes? And what is the origin of this mysterious eggplant-colored hair?

My own children have all kinds of exciting antecedents – Indians, Russians, Turks, you name it.

I am so honest myself that I have been accused (wrongly, I assure you) of suffering from a kind of albinism. So of course in the past I have thought – probably out loud – about which set of chromosomes would prevail this time, or which gene would be dominant and which would be recessive.

I expect this was exactly the kind of ruminative debate the so-called royal racist was having. It was a completely innocent and completely normal antepartum meditation, which takes place when a family is expecting a baby.

So why the epic hoo-ha? Well, I suppose that’s partly because it’s meant as a hoo-ha, not least by the tripe-mongering author.

Despite Harry and Meghan's claims about Oprah, there has been no wrongdoing, no sin against 21st century values, and no distasteful comment made. To say otherwise – and to give in to the hysteria – is to once again surrender to wokeness and cancel culture

We all love a hoo-ha, especially when it comes to the royals.

Piers Morgan can fulminate beautifully in his TV program. Government ministers have the relief of talking seriously about something other than politics through the media.

In a way it’s all innocent; and yet I cannot help thinking that there is still something pernicious in the whole affair.

The 'royal racists' were mentioned in the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie's Endgame

The ‘royal racists’ were mentioned in the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s Endgame

What is this accusation of ‘racism’? It is yet another example of the process by which ordinary human patterns of thought and behavior are challenged, demonized and expunged from the canon of acceptability. The royal family is said to be considering legal action to prevent the name(s) of the alleged perpetrator(s) from being published.

Such legal action seems to me to be a mistake. The attempt to suppress identity seems to indicate that some transgression has indeed occurred, that someone actually said something that requires public censure – which, as far as I can see, is total nonsense.

There has been no transgression, no sin against 21st century values, no unsavory comment made.

To say otherwise – and to give in to the hysteria – is to once again surrender to wokeness and cancel culture.

People have had enough of all this. Ask yourself why the viewing public has abandoned BBC Newsnight, the once great haunt of Jeremy Paxman – whose own political views, however searing his questions, were always forgotten.

Is it perhaps because the public has had enough of the endless de haut en bas* speeches to the majority of the British population who voted for Brexit?

Or ask yourself why so much of the United States electorate seems so determined – based on current evidence – to elect Donald Trump for another term as president.

It seems astonishing that they are willing to overlook his behavior after the last election, and his refusal to respect the outcome of the democratic process; and yet, for now, he appears to have a big lead in the race for the Republican nomination.

The fact is that many millions of Americans regard him as a man who speaks his mind, even if it is quite unpasteurized, and they increasingly resent the way the left-liberal establishment is trying to abolish him, use to crush him. and to keep him from seeking their vote again.

To this extent, wokeness proves self-defeating. But it’s worse than that.

I have spent a lot of time over the past eighteen months campaigning for the Ukrainian people in their heroic struggle for freedom.

Ask yourself why the viewing public has abandoned BBC Newsnight, that once great haunt of Jeremy Paxman

I am shocked when I go around the world to find so many places where they are willing to give Putin the benefit of the doubt; and one reason for that, I think, is that he can satirize some aspects of our values.

He can point to us in the liberal Western democracies and say: look at all these people, they don’t even have the guts to say what a woman is.

Or he can say: look at Western liberal education, they let pre-pubescent children decide what gender they want to be.

In other words, he presents himself as the custodian of common sense against the wacky Western workers – and, fair or not, it works.

In Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and South Asia, they read about the debates in Britain and the cancellations of people like JK Rowling and think: hmm. . . Maybe Putin has a point.

That’s a disaster. We stand up for Ukraine because we believe in freedom, democracy and human rights, and because we want to help Ukrainians defeat an evil and criminal invasion. We can win the argument on all these points.

But when it comes to wokeness, cancel culture, and banning people from saying things that have always seemed completely natural – then we lose our audience. Wokery costs the West, and we must wake up to that.

Honestly, I don’t know or care which royal said anything about Archie, but I’m sure he or she wasn’t even remotely racist. It’s time to stop all this nonsense and redraw the distinction between the ugliness of racism and prejudice – against which we have abundant laws – and ordinary, innocent patterns of human thought and behavior.

It’s time to wake the woke from their trance and cancel cancel culture; because it begins to make a mockery of the liberal values that really matter.

A charity lawyer has criticized Captain Sir Tom Moore’s Foundation for the “very sad” damage done to his “brand”, but insisted he will “always be someone who is loved”.

Captain Tom: Where did the Money Go?, which airs on Channel 5 tonight at 9pm, details the truth behind how a large amount of money donated by the British public was spent.

This includes funds raised from the sales of Captain Tom’s three books: Captain Tom’s Life Lessons, One Hundred Steps and his autobiography Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day.

Liz Brownsell, partner and head of charities for Birketts, explains that in the case of his autobiography, it has been repeatedly claimed that the proceeds will go to The Captain Tom Foundation.

Founded in June 2020, the charity aimed to recognize and raise money for organizations supporting older people in Britain.

His daughter Hannah Ingram-Moore has admitted keeping £800,000 from the three books her father wrote, claiming this was at Captain Tom’s request.

It also comes as Mrs Ingram-Moore was ordered to demolish an unauthorized £200,000 spa pool complex in her garden in Marston Moretaine, Bedfordshire.

Neighbors, who welcomed the decision, called the family’s handling of the situation ‘deceitful’ and claimed their reputation had been further damaged after a series of PR disasters.

Captain Tom raised £39 million for NHS Charities Together in the run-up to his 100th birthday during the first lockdown in 2020, prior to his death the following year.

Mrs Brownsell said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore will always be someone much loved and seen as the grandfather of the nation. It’s really sad that the brand itself has been damaged.

“So if you look on the foundation’s website, it says, ‘His autobiography and a children’s book’ will support his newly formed charity The Captain Tom Foundation.”

She also pointed to the prologue of his autobiography, which reads: ‘Amazingly, at my age, the offer to write this memoir has also given me the opportunity to raise even more money for the charitable foundation now established in my name.”

The expert said: ‘And that is the problem’

The Channel 5 documentary seeks to discover whether Britain was ‘misled’ when it donated millions of pounds to Captain Sir Tom Moore’s cause at the height of the pandemic.

In October, his daughter Ingram-Moore admitted pocketing £800,000 from books written by her father.

She claimed her father wanted the family to keep the profits from his three books: Captain Tom’s Life Lessons, One Hundred Steps and his autobiography Tomorrow Will Be A Good Day.

The family also believes that people who bought the publications were never told that their money was going to charity – a claim disputed in Captain Tom: Where did the Money Go?.

In the interview with TalkTV’s Piers Morgan, Ms Ingram-Moore also broke her silence on the £85,000 salary she earned as interim director of the Captain Tom Foundation.

She spoke about the £18,000 she earned as a judge at an awards ceremony that featured the charity’s name. Only £2,000 of that fee was donated to the organisation.

Discussing his books, written before his death at the age of 100, Ms Ingram-Moore says money earned in his name went to Club Nook Ltd – a separate company from the charity.

“These were my dad’s books, and it was honestly so much fun for him to write them, but they were his books,” she says.

“He had an agent and they were working on that deal, and his wish was that that money would end up in Club Nook, and ultimately….”

Morgan then interrupts her and asks her, “To keep?”, to which she replied, “Yes.”

It seems like years of chemical and heat treatments have taken their toll on Kim Kardashian’s hair, leaving her locks thin and wispy.

Fans of the reality TV star were no doubt shocked by her appearance in the trailer for this week’s episode of The Kardashians.

The 43 year old revealed her natural hair during a scene at the gym, revealing short, brittle-looking locks.

It’s not the first time the glamorous social media icon has given fans a glimpse of her real locks.

In August, Kim was photographed stepping off a private jet in Los Angeles (below) without her signature long, thick hair.

Recent images of Kim Kardashian's hair show short, brittle locks, unlike her signature full, long hair

Kim Kardashian’s hair is shorter and more brittle than normal, which experts say is the result of years of bleaching, extensions and hair glue

Instead, it was tied into a bun, with thin strands falling out the back. And last December, the mother of four posted a video to her TikTok channel, which showed off thin, crunchy hair that had clearly been damaged by multiple bleaching sessions.

In December 2022, Kim shocked fans with videos of her natural, wispy hair without extensions

In December 2022, Kim shocked fans with videos of her natural, wispy hair without extensions

Now experts have revealed to DailyMail.com the likely reasons why Kim’s natural hair looks the way it does – based on her extreme hairstyles over the past two years.

Kim Kardashian is a noted hairstyle chameleon, often sampling a range of different looks in the same month, from waist-length platinum blonde extensions to a sleek long dark ponytail.

But hair damage is inevitable when the scalp is subjected to extreme treatments, no matter how talented the hairdresser, although the most qualified among them are usually better able to estimate how much the hair can tolerate.

Mrs. Kardashian steps off a private plane

Recent photos of Ms. Kardashian getting off a plane show shorter, thinner hair

Bleaching the hair to strip it of all color and repeatedly applying high temperatures takes a toll on the integrity of the hair and the health of the scalp, increasing the chance of permanent hair loss.

Ms. Kardashian often wears hair extensions that reach down to her belly button, although it is not clear whether the extensions are installed via microbeads that are fused to the hair, taped or sewn into place.

But experts claim that no extensions are good for hair.

Anabel Kingsley, a hair and scalp specialist and Brand President of Philip Kingsley hair products, told DailyMail.com: ‘I wouldn’t strongly recommend hair extensions.

Pulling the hair back so that the face is taut puts pressure on the scalp and loosens the hair in the follicles

Pulling the hair back so that the face is taut puts pressure on the scalp and loosens the hair in the follicles

‘When you take them out, it’s not just a matter of going back to how your hair used to be, you’re often left with worse-looking hair. It may not be because you have caused permanent hair loss, but it may simply be because you have quite a lot of hair loss.’

Hair extensions burden the hair follicles, the roots of the hairs. Over time, the hair in the follicle becomes loose and falls out, a condition called traction alopecia.

Signs of traction alopecia include thinning or balding patches around the forehead and temples, but this can be reversed if treated early by avoiding tight hairstyles that cause tension on the scalp.

Wearing wigs, as Kim did in the fall of 2023 for a photo shoot for CR Fashion, can also damage the scalp, block hair follicles and lead to a build-up of bacteria.

Wigs that fit too tightly can cause hair loss and breakage around the perimeter of the head.

Bleaching the hair is not better.

The actual bleaching process uses strong chemicals to strip the hair of melanin, the natural pigment that determines hair color.

Bleaching also damages the integrity and structure of the hair, making it dry and brittle.

Ms Kingsley said: ‘Bloning, any form of permanent chemical processing, whether highlighting or bleaching, damage to the hair – the extent of which is very dependent on how big the change is.

“So if you were a brunette or a deep brunette and went to platinum blonde, that would be more damaging than if you were a naturally sort of dirty blonde and went to platinum blonde.”

Ms Kardashian underwent 14 hours of hair bleaching before the Met Gala last year to look like Marilyn Monroe

Ms Kardashian underwent 14 hours of hair bleaching before the Met Gala last year to look like Marilyn Monroe

Ms. Kardashian's platinum bun was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. But the tight hairstyle and extensive bleaching to achieve the look undoubtedly damaged the integrity of Ms. Kardashian's natural hair.

Ms. Kardashian’s platinum bun was a tribute to Marilyn Monroe. But the tight hairstyle and extensive bleaching to achieve the look undoubtedly damaged the integrity of Ms. Kardashian’s natural hair.

Kim Kardashian, a natural deep brunette, dyed her hair platinum blonde to completely resemble Marilyn Monroe as she wore her dress to the Met Gala last May.

She said at the time: ‘I also wanted a physical change so I thought I would wait and do it for this, so I spend a day dying my hair – 14 hours straight! – to make it happen.’

Healthy hair is covered with scales called cuticles, which lie flat like tiles on a roof. But when the hair cuticle is exposed to bleach, it raises the cuticle, making it easier for toxins to pass through the holes. Hair is therefore prone to tangles and breakage.

Ms Kingsley added: ‘The outer layer of the hair becomes weaker, but the inner part of the hair can also become damaged.

“If you bleach your hair too much, there’s a point where your hair just can’t handle it anymore and it will break off.”

Extreme heat causes similar damage to the integrity of the hair, especially if used frequently, causing it to burn in the same way as the skin.

Using heat, such as a straightener or curling iron, on dry hair also sucks out any remaining moisture in the hair, leaving strands dry and frizzy.

Ms Kingsley said people should still have the freedom to change their hair when they want, but stressed the importance of knowing how much chemical or heat intervention the hair can tolerate.

She said: ‘I’m all for coloring your hair – it’s for fun.

“Just know what the limits of your hair are, so if your hair is very fine and already fragile and you’re a brunette and you want platinum blonde, then that’s probably not something you should do.”

“But maybe opt for a kind of honey blonde or highlights — and then do conditioning treatments once a week.”

Minneapolis’ wounds are far from healed.

TJ Johnson, a South Minneapolis resident of 40 years, says he is applying for a gun license after long since giving up on police to protect him.

Veterans of the city’s police force, which has lost more than 300 officers, say they are running on fumes, tired of patrolling under a cloud of suspicion.

Elected officials are grasping for a glimmer of optimism.

Three years after the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer, a Justice Department report released Friday concluded that the city’s police department was plagued by unlawful conduct, discrimination and mismanagement. In some ways, it was meant to be an answer to Mr. Floyd’s death and to years of complaints about policing in this city of 425,000. But the devastating report seemed to bring little closure to Minneapolis, where many remain traumatized and torn by distrust.

The report — which found that Minneapolis police officers used excessive force for years, disproportionately targeted black and Native American residents, and suppressed the rights of protesters and journalists — likely ended up differently in different parts of the city, said Senator Tina Smith, a Democrat who has lived in Minneapolis since 1984.

“There are probably a lot of people reading this report, especially people living in black and brown communities, who are saying, ‘This is terrible, but it’s not news to me,'” she said. “I think there are probably also people who live in more affluent parts of the city who might be surprised to see how pervasive the violations have been.”

Mr. Johnson, the South Minneapolis resident, said his brother spent his career with the Chicago Police Department, so his view of the police force is nuanced.

But Mr. Johnson said his confidence in the Minneapolis police department was irrevocably shaken after viewing footage of Mr. Floyd’s death, footage that sparked outrage and protests across the country in the spring of 2020. The video showed Mr. Floyd, a black man, gasping for air as Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, knelt on his neck for nearly nine and a half minutes as fellow officers watched. Mr. Johnson, who, like 18 percent of Minneapolis residents, is black, said he has come to the conclusion that the city’s police department can no longer be reformed.

“I stay as far away from them as I can,” says 63-year-old Johnson, who runs an electronics recycling company and has attended the same church for 28 years. “White men and women, they don’t worry like we do.”

Mr Johnson said he inherited a gun after his brother died, and recently filed paperwork to get a firearms licence. For him, he said, this was the best security measure in Minneapolis, a city where carjackings and auto thefts have been a major problem and where he is concerned about interactions with the police.

“I plan to never go out without my gun again,” he said.

Many Minneapolis police officers viewed the report as a damning indictment that delivers yet another blow to a department beset by low morale and understaffing. The officers’ union, the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, said in a statement that the federal report had glossed over vital and heroic work.

“The report will only be used by those inclined to have an anti-police bias to justify their beliefs, while those more pro-police will question the report’s findings,” the union said. “As with most things, the truth lies somewhere in the middle.”

In interviews, longtime police officers said they welcomed calls for sweeping changes in training and accountability. But they also said many of the most egregious incidents in the report involved officers who left the force, including Mr Chauvin, who was convicted of the murder of Mr Floyd.

“Police are tired of being called racist,” said Sgt. Andrew Schroeder, a member of the department’s firearms unit and a Minneapolis officer since 2014. “The cops that are still here on the department are good cops, they want to do a good job and legitimately want to improve the community. ”

Sergeant Schroeder said officers “don’t focus on color,” noting that city statistics 2022 shows that the vast majority of gunshot victims in Minneapolis are black men, as well as suspects in the shooting in cases where descriptions are given to police. “We focus on crime.”

Mook Thomas, 27, sees things differently. Shortly after moving to the north side of Minneapolis with her husband and five young children in December 2022, she first encountered officers one night around midnight as her husband was driving home. She said they saw a police car behind them on West Broadway Avenue, a major thoroughfare, and were eventually apprehended. They were told they were pulled over due to a broken headlight, she said, though she said both headlights worked.

“He’s harassing us by telling us we don’t belong here,” said Ms Thomas, who is black, and said the officer used racial slurs.

Afterward, Ms. Thomas said she was determined to avoid the Minneapolis police officers. She wouldn’t call them, she said, even if her life was in danger. If they ever try to pull her over again, she’ll say, “I’d keep going.”

Ms. Thomas said she has never seen a black police officer in her part of town, where many residents are African Americans.

The burden of restoring trust with people like Mrs. Thomas will fall heavily on Cmdr. Yolanda Wilks, one of six black female officers on the Minneapolis Police Department. She was recently tasked with overseeing sweeping changes the city agreed to as part of a court-ordered agreement with the Minnesota Department of Human Rights. Following the release of the Justice Department report, the city and federal government began negotiations for a court-mandated review of policies and procedures similar to the one already initiated with the state.

In an interview, Commander Wilks acknowledged that rebuilding trust and resolving long-standing institutional problems will take years. But she said she hopes residents will also recognize how difficult the past few years have been for officers who stayed on the force.

“We forget that there are big-hearted, passionate people who work every day for the community they signed up for,” she said.

Commander Wilks herself said she was about to quit in the tumultuous and painful days following Mr. Floyd. She stayed, she said, because she felt the city could recover.

“It will take a while,” she said. “An open wound takes time to heal internally.”
