The idea of being hungover abroad without the comforts of home can give you a chill.

But rest assured, you're never far from a hangover cure.

It might just be an acquired taste, as we discovered when we contacted travel experts and chefs around the world to discover what foods they turn to when they have a hairy tongue and are feeling shady from eating too much of it. good.

Their responses ranged from seductive to decadent to theoretically nauseating – yet apparently effective. So which one would you try?

Taiwan – Ti hoeh koe (pig blood cake)

Pig's blood cake – congealed pig's blood mixed with rice and served on a stick – is an ideal hangover remedy, according to Taiwanese travel expert Nick Kembel

Travel author and founder of Taiwan obsessedNick Kembel, is evangelical about Taiwanese street food's ability to shake off a rough head.

He told MailOnline Travel: 'A must-try is the Taiwanese pig's blood cake, a symbolic street food sold fresh all morning. The deep crimson color may put some off, but iron-rich pig blood works wonders, reinvigorating hangover systems in one hearty slice.”

Pig's blood cake is made by mixing pig's blood with steamed glutinous rice, creating a chewy, semi-gelatinous texture, which is then rolled in peanut dust and spices and served on a stick. Nick said, “It may sound scary, but it tastes like medicine.”

Mexico – Menudo (tripe stew)

There's a plethora of impressive English options: the bacon sarnie, beans on toast, the full try-up. But instead we refer to Nigella Lawson, who loves a traditional prairie oyster.

The English TV chef said: 'My hangover remedy is the 'prairie oyster', which consists of an egg yolk, Tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, cognac and vinegar.

“You have to swallow it all at once.”

A slightly less potent version of this hangover cure was also famously favored by PG Wodehouse character Jeeves – it consisted of Worcestershire sauce, raw egg and red pepper.

Australia – Vegemite on toast

Vegemite is packed with salt and B vitamins – things that need to be replenished because they are quickly used up as the body processes alcohol, says medical nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer

Vegemite is packed with salt and B vitamins – things that need to be replenished because they are quickly used up as the body processes alcohol, says medical nutritionist Dr Sarah Brewer

In 2018, medical nutritionist Dr. Sarah Brewer ranked the best hangover dishes in the world. Her number one? The Australian classic, Vegemite on toast.

“Australian Vegemite on toast tops our list for the best hangover remedies, proving that the simpler the better,” she said.

'Vegemite is full of salt and B vitamins; substances that need to be replenished because they are quickly used up when the body processes alcohol.'

You'll also get a good dose of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and selenium, which are known to help keep skin and eyes healthy.

Spread it in cheese and you'll also replenish your proteins and fats.

Sarah Murphy, creator of the North Carolina Travel Blog Discover more NCraving about their local remedy, MailOnline Travel tells us: 'As any local will tell you, there's nothing quite like a biscuit from Bojangles [a Southeastern American chain restaurant] – whether it's their signature buttermilk biscuit or a savory filet biscuit sandwich.”

According to Sarah, biscuits and gravy — soft dough biscuits covered in white gravy, made from the drippings of cooked pork sausage — are “quintessential Southern comfort food that just feels good.”

Korea – Haejang-Guk (hangover soup)

Judy Joo, founder of Korean restaurant Seoul Food, explains:

'It's called Haejang-Guk and means 'hangover soup'. It usually consists of dried Chinese cabbage, vegetables and meat in a hearty beef broth.'

Hugo Brown, assistant travel editor of The Mail, cites a particularly effective dish he ate in Jersey: freshly shucked oysters, eaten on the beach and washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Nauseating or curative? He emphasizes the latter (and emphasizes that the meal does not occur regularly).

Spain – Tortilla de Patata (Spanish omelette)

“A classic dish that never fails is tortilla de patata, also called Spanish omelette,” says a Spanish travel expert

Lucia Polla, founder of Viva La Vita, is a Spanish travel expert. She told MailOnline Travel: 'We Spaniards certainly know a thing or two about curing hangovers after a long night of fun!

'A classic dish that never fails is tortilla de patata, also called Spanish omelette. This hearty potato and egg breakfast is a favorite here for good reason. The combination of fluffy eggs, sliced potatoes, onions and olive oil gives you just what you need to feel human again… as comforting as a hug from your grandma.”

In Spain it is considered a delicacy if the eggs are undercooked: the runnier the better. As a result, Madrid is experiencing a surge in salmonella cases linked to raw eggs in tortillas, so eat under advice or the hangover may mutate.

Thailand – khao dtom (Thai rice soup)

The francesinha – unique to Porto, Portugal – is the ultimate hangover toastie.

It is made by filling bread with pork, smoked sausage and bacon and finishing it with a medium-rare steak. More bread and then melted cheese are added before it is finally drowned in a melted, spiced tomato-and-beer sauce and served with fries.

The francesinha was endorsed by the late, great Anthony Bourdain, who said: “Meat, cheese, fat and bread. It is the immortal combination.'

It begs the question of whether curing a hangover is worth causing cardiac arrest.

A PROFESSIONAL party girl has revealed her secret to surviving heavy drinking sessions and claims she has an unbeatable hangover cure.

Danielle Walsh, 34, says her role as an events representative combined with her years of drinking experience makes her an expert in banishing the after-effects of alcohol.

The professional party girl gets paid for drinks with gamblers

She gets paid to be the life and soul of the party at stag dos in Northern Ireland – and drinks while doing it.

The 34-year-old was scouted by a bar manager who within seconds spotted one of her impressive viral videos of herself guzzling cocktails.

Now Danielle is tasked with giving punters “the best night of their lives” as hostess at a popular bar on her home turf.

But consistently having a night out can overtake even the heaviest drinkers – so she formulated the perfect remedy to get rid of her sore head.

The rescuer, who acts as a party animal, claims that the solution to curing your hangover requires just a few basic items.

Danielle told me Daily star: “You can't dwell on it. You have to get up and go out and make sure your house is clean beforehand.

“Every Sunday I get prepped with a multi-pack of pickled onion Walkers crisps and diet coke. Honestly, it works wonders.”

She insists that her trusty snacks are the only thing she relies on to ensure she can get back into town the next night.

The partygoer and mother of one manages to fit her fun job into her nine-to-five work week schedule because she isn't besieged by a crippling hangover.

And she needs all the energy she can get for the evening, because after a few welcome drinks, Danielle jumps on the party bike with the party goers for a non-stop drinking session.

She then returns with her husbands-to-be for a series of raunchy activities, including willy workshops, cocktail classes and strippers.

The mother continued: “I do it because I enjoy it. I don't get paid more than anyone else on the team.

“Think of a weekend in Ibiza, but in Belfast. I take tourists from all over the world.

“I'm a party animal and love a night out, so getting paid to party is an absolute dream for me.

“I can let my hair down and blow off steam – while making money – it's a win-win. My healthcare colleagues absolutely love it and find it hilarious.”

Brits have long been looking for a hangover solution that actually works.

HELP FOR HANGOVER

The NHS recommends that both men and women should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol per week.

This equates to six small glasses of wine, six pints of lager or five pints of cider.

Celebrities aren't immune to the effects of partying either: They're seen sharing their secrets to feeling better in the morning.

Footie chief executive David Beckham swears by an Alka-Seltzer tablet before bed and then a bacon sarnie in the morning, explaining: “My grandpa told me to do that.”

And GOOP wellness guru Gwyneth Paltrow promises that switching between hot and cold water in the shower will revive you.

Pharmaceutical giants are keen to capitalize on drinkers' desperation to get rid of their hangovers too.

A new pill has hit the market that claims to put an end to your self-imposed struggles, leaving you feeling refreshed the next day.

Myrkl is a new supplement you can take before drinking that claims to prevent hangovers.

Participants in a clinical trial who drank two glasses of wine and took the supplement before drinking had an average of 50 percent less alcohol in their blood after 30 minutes.

After 60 minutes they had 70 percent less, significantly reducing the impact of alcohol on the body.

However, Dr. Deborah Lee of Dr. Fox Online Pharmacy told The Sun that it is “not so much a hangover cure, but rather a means of preventing you from getting drunk.”

A Guinness lover has claimed he drank 81 pints in one weekend and didn't even have a hangover.

Sean Bryan, 33, from Kilkenny, Ireland, shared the details of his big weekend on Facebook.

While some praised it, others said it was “dangerous.” labeled him an 'idiot' for 'risking his life'.

The man said he started drinking at the local pub at 1pm on December 29 and had his 81st pint at 9pm over the next two days on New Year's Eve – before going to bed before midnight.

Sean said he spent a whopping €400 (£344) on beer over the three days and says Guinness is his favorite alcoholic drink.

But after the 6ft tall Guinness enthusiast shared his feats online, many social media users were unimpressed by his stunt due to the health risks and said he was 'stupid' for bragging about it.

Sean Bryan, 33, who drank 81 pints of Guinness in one weekend, was branded 'stupid'

Hundreds of Facebook users branded his behavior 'dangerous', while others said they wouldn't drink that much booze in a month.

According to the NHS, men and women are not advised to regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week.

This is equivalent to six pints of medium strength beer or ten small glasses of lower strength wine. Long-term alcohol abuse can result in a weakened immune system, high blood pressure, liver disease and increase the risk of stroke.

A pint of Guinness contains 210 calories and has an alcohol content of 2.3 per pint.

In Sean's case, he found himself guzzling more than 17,000 liquid calories in three days, resulting in 186.3 alcohol units – more than 13 times the recommended weekly alcohol limit.

Despite others raising safety concerns about the safety crew worker's drinking, the 33-year-old said he does not count calories and believes his drinking session was not dangerous because it was a one-off event.

“I don't think it's dangerous to do this every now and then, but if you did it week after week it would be,” he said.

'But because it was a one-off and because it was Christmas, [it was okay] and I never actually count calories.

Sean was hit by some hurtful Facebook comments on his post claiming he was dead at the young age of 40

Sean was hit by some hurtful Facebook comments on his post claiming he was dead at the young age of 40

'I started drinking on Friday December 29 and had my first Guinness in the local pub around 1pm.

'I went home every night, but [returned every day and] stayed in the pub drinking all weekend.

'I drank 81 pints of Guinness, breaking my last record of 78. It wasn't really a challenge I set myself, it just became a thrill between friends.

'[Over the 81 pint Guinness weekend]I was just drinking in the pub with friends.

'I drank my 81st pint on Sunday 31 December at 9pm and then went home [from the pub] at 10 p.m., so I didn't continue drinking into the new year. I wasn't hungover, but I was quite tired [after the weekend of drinking].

'An average pint of Guinness in a pub in Europe costs about five euros and in total I spent about four hundred euros on pints of Guinness [over the three days].'

Sean said that after completing his 81 pint stunt, his friends have now challenged him to drink 100 Guinnesses in three days, but luckily he has no intention of trying as he thinks this challenge may be impossible to complete.

Sean said: 'People in the comments said I would be dead before I was 40 and that I looked very unhealthy and I kind of took this to heart.

'[Drinking the 81 Guinnesses] It's over now, but I wouldn't want young people to read this and think of me as a role model or anything like that.

'I just did it for some crack. However, it was fun to do at the time and I think it's fine to do as a one-time activity.

'Everyone has an opinion on social media. That's the generation we're growing up in now and that's how it is.'

After revealing his antics on social media, his post was flooded with more than 3,900 comments – many of which criticized him for “bragging” about them or for being concerned about his health.

One user said: 'Impressive*not.' A second user said: 'It's a stupid thing to brag about no matter what you say.'

One user wrote: 'Stupidity at its best, bragging that they can drink themselves to death.

“I'd have more respect for the guy if he told everyone he's been sober for 81 days. Much more of an achievement.'

A fourth commented: 'A huge amount of stout, I wouldn't even drink that much in a month.'

Sean followed up his original post a few days later, announcing that after the amount of “abuse and health advice” he received in response to his claims, he was enjoying a shandy on his birthday instead.

Sean said: 'Given the abuse and health advice I received on New Year's Eve from the many wonderful people, doctors and psychiatrists in this group, I celebrated my birthday with a shandy but insisted on a Guinness glass.'

Alcohol Change UK said they could not comment on the specific incident but provided the following guidance.

'The UK Chief Medical Officers guidelines for low-risk drinking recommend staying below 14 units per week (that's about six pints of regular strength beer or one and a half bottles of wine), and spreading your intake over three days or more with a few alcoholic drinks. – also days off.

'Regularly drinking above the recommended low-risk guidelines can be harmful to our health.'

Drink Aware and Guinness were contacted for comment.

As Britons up and down the country wake up with sore heads this morning after ringing in the new year in style last night, some people might be wishing they hadn’t reached for that last glass of bubbly.

Despite significant advancements in technology and science over the last few decades as modern medicine achieves things once thought impossible, it seems unfair to those of us who enjoy a drink that there still doesn’t seem to be a universal cure for a good old-fashioned hangover.

Perhaps it’s a case of different things working for different people – with some people opting to ‘sweat out’ the hangover with exercise, while others praise the benefits of extra hydration the morning after the night before.

And, from time to time, a new novel hangover cure is touted that claims to dust off the cobwebs and soothe that aching head.

The latest trendy item said to help cure a hangover is TikTok’s favourite accessory, caviar, with experts hailing its benefits in protecting liver and providing a healthy dose of vitamin B12.

But does it really work? FEMAIL sent reporter Maria Okanrende out for a night on the town to investigate whether or not expensive fish eggs can really make you feel better the morning after a heavy night…

Femail’s Maria Okanrende has tested out whether caviar actually cures a hangover (Pictured: Maria with a cocktail at British grill restaurant 20 Berkeley in Mayfair)

The fun experiment wouldn't be complete without a round of cocktails of course (Pictured: A glass of Furleigh sparkling wine (left) and a Plum and Peach cocktail (right))

Why is caviar touted as a hangover cure?

Caviar is a luxury delicacy that is traditionally composed from the unfertilised eggs, technically known as oocytes, of Sturgeon fish.

According to scientists, caviar can ease the symptoms of a hangover due to its high concentration of vitamin B12.

When we consume too much alcohol, our body is sometimes drained of essential nutrients and vitamins, including B12, which plays a major role in the functioning of our brain and nervous systems and aids our bodies to get over hangovers.

The salt-cured delicacy is also rich in choline, an essential nutrient in the body usually thought of as a B-complex vitamin, and which contributes to the maintenance of normal liver function.

A healthy liver is crucial as the overconsumption of alcohol over extended periods of time can cause irreversible liver damage.

Caviar is also touted as a hangover remedy due to its high content of acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter believed to play a key role in memory retention) which lines the stomach and increases the body’s tolerance to alcohol.

Last week it was reported that the expensive food product has seen a 76% surge in sales in recent months after it became a TikTok obsession.

Gen Z revellers around the world are showing off their prowess by indulding in the caviar ‘bump’ trend – in which they put a pile of the roe onto the back of their hand and licking it.

The night before…

So back to my night… it all kicked off at the corner of Berkeley Street in London’s bustling West End at around 8:30pm.

Although I knew I had work the next day, I threw caution to the wind and came ready for an eventful night dressed in a black blazer, silver sequined trousers and yellow pointed heels. I dashed my winter coat behind – after all I would have alcohol to heat me up.

The stylish venue was decorated with the brightest of Christmas trimmings, including tinsel and festive lights, and its interior was just as welcoming.

Before reporting for duty, we were treated to a tour of the building, and shown both the main restaurant and the room that was to be our home for the night – the Nipperkin bar.

The petite room was nestled in a quiet spot on the ground floor and located just beneath the restaurant. It was surprisingly cosy, and featured a flirtaciously dimming atmosphere, of course apt for a night of drinking or perhaps a date.

After a detailed introduction from host Cleo, assistant bar manager Eugene Kourtoulla and head bartender Giuseppe, we were handed the menu and without hesitation got straight down to business.

I had my eye on champagne, after which I was recommended a glass of Furleigh, an English rose sparkling wine from Dorset. It was surprisingly smooth and thankfully not too dry, prompting me to down two glasses in quick succession – well quick for me.

After 30 minutes it was on to the bar’s varied selection of cocktails which extended to over three pages of the menu. First up was Sloes and Brambles, a delightful concoction of gin, spiced blackberry spirit, sloes – also known as blackthorns – and fermented brambles.

The cocktails kept coming, and later on so did my headaches

Tasked with the ineffable-but-very-serious attempt at a hangover, I and a friend got straight to work

I must admit, as a gal that usually can only stomac one drink, and possibly two on a special occasion – I was already feeling woozy and knew I was fast approaching my limit.

However, I had work to do and so I ploughed on, right into a glass of the healthy-sounding Celery and Cucumber. Inside this one were Suffolk celeries, cucumbers, Scottish red peppers and wine.

I accompanied this with a Fig and Honey; a delightfully sweet rum, fig and soda mixture, and to finish off, I downed a Plum and Peach cocktail – and through it all, I didn’t eat a thing.

Just before midnight, we called it quits, said our goodbyes and walked (slowly) into an Uber, where I was reportedly out like a log for the rest of the one-hour ride home.

The morning after…

The medical term for a hangover is ‘Veisalgia’ and this term originates from the Norwegian and Greek words: ‘uneasiness following debauchery’ (kveis) and ‘pain’ (algia). No words have rung truer.

One may assume – at least my pal did – that judging by my deep slumber at the back of the cab, I’d be set for the night. In fact my friend was so worried I’d snooze through my alarm she sent a text to wake me up right on the nose at 6am.

Unfortunately, this was not my reality and instead I sprang up less than an two hours later at around 2 am feeling like I’d been deprived of water for all of eternity.

Luckily, I keep a bottle of water by my bedside, but after consuming 500 ml in one trot, my mouth still felt drier than the Nyiri desert.

Before I even had the chance to further quench my thirst, I immediately grabbed my head to try and prevent what felt like a mini human punching the back of my forehead. Of course I later realised it was a pounding headache.

Confused, tired and I must say annoyed, I slowly crept towards my bedroom light and fumbled around for the light switch. This turned out to be the biggest mistake of my night, and not the six drinks I had downed in quick succession merely hours beforehand.

The beaming light somehow made me feel dizzy and confused, at which point symptoms of nausea and body aches had begun to set in.

After resuming the comfort of darkness deep  beneath my blanket, it was there I lay hungover and intensely hungry – but incapable of moving – until  6am.

I somehow managed to freshen up, drop my daughter to school and hop on a train to work, albeit without breaking a smile and feeling somehow tortured.

The verdict

To help me finalise my experiment, I’ve indulged in a few spoonfuls of caviar from King’s Fine Food – British caviar specialists appointed the Royal Warrant in 2021 by deference to the late Queen Elizabeth.

A 50g can of King’s Fine Food Oscietra Caviar comes in at £83.45.

I must add that I normally relish the chance to indulge in the salty delicacy, and I absolutely adore its soft, deliciously tender nature.

However, this morning as you can imagine I wasn’t in the mood to eat anything. Oddly I felt ravenously hungry, yet the thought of consuming any type of food moved me to purge.

I was adamant that this would be the perfect time to conduct the test, so I could clearly decipher any immediate changes in my symptoms.

At around 10:30am, barely 12 hours after my night of revelry, I sat down dinner spoon in hand with a serving of some of the finest British caviar fresh from the fridge

Depending on your alcohol tolerance level, results of this experiment may vary, but for me, it's safe to say that the luxury treat fast-tracked my recovery and I feel 70 per cent hangover-free

Both hesitant and curious, I steadily plodded around the tin while ruminating for a moment before scooping some up and placing it in my mouth. I first noticed how shocked I was to savour the taste after initially feeling repulsed.

By the second mouthful, my eyes slowly widened, adjusting to what I had previously thought were painstakingly overly bright lights.

I consumed two more helpings and then set off back to the office to monitor the outcome of my experiment.

I was pleasantly surprised…

By lunchtime, I was not yet quite the loveable Maria we all know, but I did feel more human and less like an unuseful thing.

Staring at the computer screen for long periods of time no longer annoyed me, meanwhile my energy levels had perked up and I could actually commit to my working day without much intrusion.

Depending on your alcohol tolerance level, results of this experiment may vary, but for me, it’s safe to say that the luxury treat fast-tracked my recovery and I felt 70 per cent hangover-free.

Boozy Britons braved the dreary weather and dressed to the nines in their best outfits to kick off 2024 in spectacular fashion last night.

Thousands of revellers from cities including London, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds and Newcastle refused to let the miserable weather dampen their parade as they powered through the pouring rain.

Forecasters had earlier in the day issued a storm warning for 75mph gales and downpours which had sparked event cancellations across the South.

However, partygoers posed for photos with pals as they descended on Britain’s pubs and bars and firework displays.

A huge crowd flocked to the banks of the Thames to watch London’s unity and diversity-themed firework display where ‘London: A Place For Everyone’ was written high in the skies over the capital as the bongs of Big Ben sounded midnight.

The display marked the King’s coronation year and also used Charles’ quote to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush crossing in which he said the new arrivals ‘collectively enrich the fabric of our national life’. There were repeated references to London’s diversity and inclusivity, with the capital telling the world everyone is welcome in a city where people can be themselves.

The show, designed by Cambridgeshire-based pyrotechnics firm Titanium Fireworks, boasted more than 12,000 fireworks.

After millions watched the incredible displays in Sydney and Auckland, Mayor Sadiq Khan told Sky News that the events would be ‘nothing’ compared to London’s – which lasted for just under 15 minutes.

After the bongs of Big Ben sounded midnight, ‘London: A Place for Everyone’ was written high above the crowds as the unity-themed display welcomed the new year.

As hits by the Spice Girls, Calvin Harris, Dua Lipa and others rang out across the city, revellers were invited to look back on 2023.

The celebration referenced the King’s coronation and also used Charles’ quote to mark the 75th anniversary of the Windrush crossing in which he said the new arrivals ‘collectively enrich the fabric of our national life’.

The display – which included more than 12,000 fireworks, 600 drones and 430 lights – also paid homage to the NHS, which celebrated 75 years in 2023.

There were repeated references to London’s diversity and inclusivity, with the capital telling the world everyone is welcome in a city where people can be themselves.

Further messages throughout the pyrotechnic show were heard from Mr Khan, Dame Helen Mirren, Bella Ramsey, Stephen Fry, Joanna Lumley, George the Poet, and Baroness Floella Benjamin, who read a poem by the late Benjamin Zephaniah.

Mr Khan said: ‘Our unique combination of fireworks, drones, lighting and music have put on a fabulous show for the millions watching around the globe, sending a message of unity and showing why London is the greatest city in the world.

‘2023 was filled with so many special moments, and as we move into 2024, I feel more inspired than ever to continue our work towards building a better, greener and more prosperous city for everyone.’

In true British fashion, large parts of the country have welcomed 2024 in with a deluge of rain, but many who are out and about to celebrate the occasion will do their best not to let it dampen their spirits.

In Scotland, the 30th Hogmanay street party in Edinburgh was headlined by rock band Pulp after their surprise reunion last year.

Edinburgh City Council leader Cammy Day said: ‘After the difficult years of the pandemic, I’m overjoyed that our festivals are back to their brilliant best and providing such high calibre cultural offerings for our residents and visitors.’

Elsewhere, there has already been an impressive firework show in Blackpool, as the explosives erupted into the sky with Blackpool Tower illuminated in the background.

In Newcastle’s Quayside crowds were treated to BAFTA award-winning artist Seb Lee-Delisle’s new Laser Light City laser show, which was projected onto the Baltic Flour Mills.

Revellers also gathered in anticipation of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay firework display as musicians hyped the crowd up for an evening of entertainment.

Thousands of people are at the sold out Princes Garden Street Party and Concert in the Gardens in what mark’s the festival’s 30th anniversary.

The event, organised by UniqueAssembly and City of Edinburgh Council, was headlined by Pulp, who have not played in the city in 20 years. Following their set, the fireworks will begin at midnight and will end at around 00.50am on Monday.

Before the event, Alex MacDonald, 26, said he was most excited for Pulp and the fireworks. He told the PA news agency: ‘I’m heavy looking forward to Pulp, like – it’s gonna be smashing. ‘The fireworks will be phenomenal man. It’ll be brilliant. We’ll have a heavy bevy to that, ken what I’m saying?’

Dave Reed, also 26, said he is ‘here for the tunes and everything else that’s happening’.

He added: ‘I’m well excited for the fireworks, it’s gonna be everything. ‘That’s what Edinburgh is all about, and that’s what Hogmanay is all about.’

Ahead of the main display, there were some small firework displays between different musical sets, much to the applause of the hyped-up crowd.

Commenting on the news of a sell-out, Al Thomson, co-director of UniqueAssembly, said: ‘We’re in for one hell of a party now. Fifty thousand people in the streets of Edinburgh enjoying good music, good company, and one of the best fireworks displays in the world – there’s no better way to start the new year.

‘We started things off right with the Torchlight Procession on Friday, where we saw 20,000 people come together to shine a light on homelessness, raising money for our charity partner Social Bite; and this is just the perfect end to the year and the best way to celebrate 30 years of Edinburgh’s Hogmanay.’

However, not every planned event took place this evening, with Plymouth’s Winter Wonderland and a Devon town’s fireworks display both cancelled.

A yellow weather warning for wind is in place for Britain’s entire southern coastline and south Wales.

While the north west has been slapped with a rain warning with heavy downpours expected across Lancashire, Merseyside, Greater Manchester, Blackpool, Blackburn, and West Yorkshire.

Saturday’s Eurostar cancellations hit one family who were hoping to make it back to Britain in time for New Years, after they were stranded in Brussels following a surprise trip for a Canadian relative.

Luke Gibbs, 32, from Kenley, south London, travelled with his wife, Kyla, cousin Liam Eton and sister-in-law Brea Melanson, from Canada, and planned to arrive in London in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations on Sunday.

Mr Gibbs, a business development manager, paid £600 for a New Year’s Eve event in London Bridge, which is not refundable and now he cannot attend after his train from Brussels to St Pancras was cancelled. He described the communication with Eurostar as ‘appalling’.

‘I think the way (Eurostar) dealt with it is pretty appalling in terms of not trying to say ‘this is how you rebook it, we’ll help you out with expenses’,’ Mr Gibbs told the PA news agency.

‘They just said, ‘unfortunately, it’s cancelled, we’re sorry, get on with it’, which is shocking really.’

Organisers of Plymouth’s Winter Wonderland took the ‘very difficult decision’ to rip up its plans for New Year’s Eve tonight because of the expected stormy winds.

‘As much as we are very disappointed and frustrated, your safety comes first, as well as ours, and we can’t possibly take the risk,’ they said as they confirmed those who had bought tickets will be fully refunded.

Elsewhere, Barnstaple, in Devon, cancelled its annual fireworks because of the ‘horrendous’ weather, reported Devon Live.

Barnstaple Town Centre Management said it axed the display for safety reasons.

They said: ‘Unfortunately due to the weather conditions and the gusting winds we will be unable to do the fireworks this evening due to safety.

‘We know this is disappointing, but safety is always the priority and we unfortunately can’t control the weather.’

Temperatures are set to plummet on New Year’s Day and in January increasing the chance of sleet and snow on higher grounds in the north, with frosty mornings for many.

Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: ‘There are growing signs of cold weather developing as we head through the first half of January.

‘The chance of a significant cold spell is quite high.

‘The highest risk of snow will probably be in the North and East. But if low pressure pushes up from the southwest, this would lead to the possibility of snow as weather fronts move northeast.’

The holidays are here, and for many that means raising a glass or two to celebrate. For some, however, the side effects of drinking wine, from headaches and rashes to nausea and heart palpitations, are anything but joyful.

Sulphites are often cited as the culprit. In fact, wine contains significantly fewer sulfites (naturally occurring compounds that act as preservatives) than many other food and drink products.

Those unlucky enough to be allergic to sulfites should obviously avoid wines with added sulfur, but for most wine drinkers the levels are simply too low to cause side effects.

Another suspect in the wine headache whodunnit is histamine. Produced by bacteria, histamines are naturally occurring compounds found not only in wine, but also in chocolate and cheese, to name a few.

However, when histamine is mixed with alcohol, the body’s ability to break down toxins can be compromised, leading to worse side effects for some.

For those planning to raise a glass or two to celebrate this holiday season, Helen McGinn reveals what to drink to have a better chance of avoiding a hangover in the morning (stock image)

In general, crisp white wines are likely to contain lower levels of histamine compared to red wines or many so-called natural or even biodynamic wines.

But that is not everything. A recent study published by the University of California points to evidence that the real culprit could in fact be quercetin, a natural compound present in red wines, especially those from warmer climates. When mixed with alcohol, it can hinder the body’s ability to metabolize it.

So can you really choose wines that are less likely to lead to a pounding headache in the morning?

Here’s wine expert Helen McGinn’s picks for the glasses to raise if you want a better chance of having a clear head the next day…

Move over Prosecco, there’s a new Italian sparkling wine in town! And because it has about a third the amount of natural residual sugar compared to most Proseccos, sugar levels are less likely to rise after a few glasses, which can leave some feeling sluggish.

Made from the Ribolla Gialla grape grown in vineyards in the cooler northern Italian region of Friuli, it is fresh and slightly floral with aromas of pear and peach. The perfect party starter. 9/10

CRISP CREMANT

Taste the difference Cremant de Loire, £10.50, Sainsbury’s

The Loire region is one of the coolest in France, both in terms of climate and qualifications.

This particular sparkling wine is a blend of Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay grapes and made in the same way as Champagne by Ladubay, a company founded in 1851. Fresh with crisp, green apple flavors and a slightly toasty note, it is also only 12.5 percent alcohol. 7/10

FRUITY NUMBER

Co-op irresistible Rioja Blanco 2022, £7.50

You might not think of Rioja for white wine, but this one, new to the Co-op Irresistible range, is fantastic.

Made by a great producer called Muriel from a blend of mainly Viura with some Tempranillo Blanco. There’s no oak involved, so it’s all about the fruit – in this case citrus and white peach. 6/10

COOL WHITE

Found Arinto, £7.50, M&S

Found Arinto, £7.50, M&S

Found Arinto, £7.50, M&S

The key to lower levels of quercetin in wine, according to studies conducted so far, is to stick to red wines from cooler climates and prefer white wines to red wines.

Obviously Portugal is hot, but the location of Lisbon’s vineyards, close to the coast, helps retain freshness and natural acidity, especially in the Arinto grape.

Think of it as a squeeze of lemon and pair it with seafood. At a modest 12.5 percent alcohol, it’s enough to get you in the party mood, but you’re less likely to regret it the next day. 7/10

GREEN AND PLEASANT

Torre de Lapela Vinho Verde, £5.50, Asda

Another one from Portugal, but this one comes from the far north. Vinho Verde translates as ‘green’ wine, a reference to its youth, not its colour, and here you’ll find some of the country’s freshest white wines with naturally lower alcohol content.

This is made from a blend of Alvarinho and Trajadura grapes, grown in vineyards on the banks of the Minho River. Fresh and vibrant with peach and apricot fruit flavors, try this 10 percent alcohol with shellfish. 6/10

BURGUNDY BELTER

Caves de Lugny Macon villages, £10.50, Asda

Choosing white over red is a wise choice for those who want to avoid unwanted side effects, and white Burgundy is a festive classic. Unfortunately, it really isn’t cheap and prices have risen in recent years, putting it out of the price range of many wine lovers.

However, this is made by a large cooperative winery in a village called Lugny, one of the largest in the region. The wine is fresh, clean and clear, with that roundness that makes white Burgundy so drinkable. However, don’t let the price tempt you into a third glass. 8/10

CANAPE COCKTAIL

Irresistible Cotes de Provence, £9.50, co-op

Keeping with the fresh, dry theme, Provence rosé is a good place to forage as the appellation rules regulate the amount of natural residual sugar and alcohol allowed in their wines.

However, as with white Burgundy, prices have been rising in recent years. New to the Co-op range, this is made by a great co-operative producer in the region from a cocktail of grapes including Grenache Gris, Cinsault, Carignan, Syrah, Mourvedre & Rolle. Bright and fresh with citrus and light red fruit, serve this with canapes. 8/10

BEST OF ROSEBOS

Artesano de Argento Organic Malbec Rosé, £10, Sainsbury’s

Red grapes can produce wines with higher levels of quercetin, but this is a rosé made from red grapes. The juice and skins are left together for a relatively short time, compared to how long it would take to make a red wine, so the wines are likely to contain fewer headache-causing substances.

This is a blend of (mainly) Malbec and Syrah grapes from vineyards more than 1,000 meters above sea level.

This higher altitude creates a jump between daytime and nighttime temperatures, slowing the ripening of the grapes and preserving their crispness.

It has spice when it comes to taste, but scores only 12.5 percent on the alcohol front. 7/10

CHERRY PICK

Taste the Difference Chilean Pinot Noir, £9.25, Sainsbury’s

Taste the Difference Chilean Pinot Noir, £9.25, Sainsbury's

Taste the Difference Chilean Pinot Noir, £9.25, Sainsbury’s

If you want a red wine from a cooler region, this one, from the southern part of Biobio in Chile, is made by a great producer and is packed with fresh black cherry and raspberry flavors.

The Pinot Noir grape does not like heat and probably has a lower quercetin content than, for example, a Cabernet Sauvignon from a warmer region such as California.

And when it comes to turkey-loving red wines, Pinot Noir is perfect. 8/10

SIX-STEP PLAN FOR CUREING A HANGOVER

  1. Avoid brown liquors
  2. Drink a bottle of water before you go to sleep and when you wake up
  3. Eat plenty of carbohydrates to replenish your sugar levels the next morning
  4. Take painkiller, but avoid Tylenol (acetaminophen)
  5. Drink coffee or tea to give your energy levels a caffeine boost
  6. Supplement with B vitamins and zinc

Dr. Whittington recommends avoiding dark liquors like whiskey and cognac in the first place, as they have been proven to cause worse hangovers.

“After a night of heavy drinking, drink a bottle of water before you go to sleep and when you wake up the next morning,” he says.

The medical expert adds that you should also “eat plenty of carbohydrates to replenish your sugar levels” after you wake up.

“It’s fine to take something for the headache,” he explains, “but avoid Tylenol, which puts a strain on your liver.”

Combining alcohol with acetaminophen, the generic name for Tylenol, can accentuate the painkiller’s toxic effects on the liver, according to Harvard Health Publishers.

Aspirin, ibuprofen, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are better options for combating hangover headaches.

Dr. Whittington also recommends drinking coffee or tea to “give yourself caffeine to boost your energy levels.”

The doctor’s final tip is to “supplement with B vitamins and zinc, which have been shown to improve hangover.”

The video has been viewed more than 100,000 times since it was posted in August, a few months before the holidays were in full swing.

The advice of Dr. Whittington inspired others to share their hangover cures in the comments.

‘I drink pickle juice before I start drinking. Always works for me!’ one person shared.

“Emergency C and 800 mg ibu before bed,” another advised.

“I take a Dramamine, it works great,” someone else insisted.

Others offered a safe way to avoid a hangover: “Don’t drink.”

“I’m grateful this is no longer an issue,” one viewer explained. “Getting older took care of my drinking days.”

Newly single Hugh Jackman admitted he was ‘hangover sweaty’ after a boozy night out in London on Thursday.

The Wolverine star, 55, enjoyed a bottle of Champagne Ruinart Blanc de Blancs NV, worth £100, while dining out at Gordon Ramsay’s Bar and Grill.

Dressed for the weather, the actor looked handsome in dark blue jeans, a navy blue sweater and a dark blue bomber jacket.

Hugh posted a series of photos on Instagram to thank Gordan, 57, for making it ‘a night to remember’ – although it’s not clear if the chef was actually there as he revealed his transfer sweat was worth it used to be.

He captioned the post: “Went out on a school night. I knew I’d be paying for it in sweat today, but – so worth it!! Thanks @gordongram.
