Saturday's Newbury Placepot picks

LEG 1: Hurry, make progress

HASTHING was useful at bumpers and has done very well since moving to hurdles with wins at Leicester and Catterick. He was worth much more than the official profit margin last time and seems capable of much better.

MAKING AHEAD has held its own in the company of Graded and will enjoy taking a course here more.

LEG 2: American sniper, Emitom

AMERICAN SNEAKER He charged onto the Cheltenham hill and scored over 2m5f two runs ago. He will prefer this test to the shorter distance he covered when finishing fourth at Taunton at the latest. He seems capable of improving for this distance and it is still early days at handicap level.

EMITOM goes on any surface and went through the mud for a close-up second at the latest in Ludlow. This is more difficult from a higher grade, but it has place claims.

LEG 3: Shishkin

SHISHKIN seemed an unlucky loser last time in the King George in Kempton. He seemed to have the race at his mercy, but stumbled on the flat after jumping penultimate. He previously declined to race at Ascot, which will always be a concern, but he is a multiple Grade 1 winner who looks suitable for this trip. He can make a run at the Gold Cup with a good performance here.

FLOOR 4: Boothill

BOOTHILL took the first fall of his career at Kempton last time out, but he can get back on track here. He was previously a back-to-back winner at Ascot and appears to have improved since being placed in this class last season.

LEG 5: Iberico Lord, Altobelli

IBERICO LORD looked a class act when winning the Greatwood Hurdle in the mud at Cheltenham two runs ago. He was looking very strong this trip and still had plenty left in the tank. The faster field at Ascot was against him last time and these conditions will better suit what still looks like a reasonable handicap.

ALTOBELLI has knocked on the door at Ascot in good company and there is more to come at this early stage of his career. In any case, trainer Harry Fry has high expectations of him.

LEG 6: Inch house

INCH HOUSE scored on his last two points here and was close in good company at Cheltenham last time. It will be disappointing if he can't make the frame.
