Tragedy as dad backs up and kills his toddler daughter after walking into driveway in ‘tragic accident’

A toddler died in a tragic accident after her father reversed his car, an inquest heard.

Haniyah Bint Vaqas Youni was just 19 months old when she died after being run over in her driveway on Millwater Avenue in Dewsburyon May 21, 2023.

The toddler had been playing in the garden before walking along a path past the family home.

She walked through an unlocked gate to the driveway at around 10am and heard an inquest at HM Coroner’s Court in Bradford yesterday.

Haniyah sat in the blind spot behind her father’s BMW Three Series and was tragically killed about ten minutes later.

West Yorkshire Police’s Collisions Investigation Unit previously found that Hanniyah’s small size meant the car’s sensors were unlikely to have detected her.

The inquest heard two doctors living on the street rushed to the horrific scene and tried to save the little girl.

They found Haniyah’s mother cradling her daughter and saw blood on the toddler.

Emergency services rushed Haniyah to Leeds General Infirmary where she was pronounced dead at 11.32am.

The official cause of the 19-month-old baby’s death was traumatic head injury.

Senior Coroner Martin Dominic Fleming said: “Haniyah was a sweet, lively, healthy little girl.

“The great tragedy here is that there was nothing to alert the father to her presence.”
