If there is one person who knows something about traveling with a budget, it is Alfie Watts.
On last year’s series Race all over the worldThe 22-year-old from St. Albans and his Pal Owen Wood received a budget of only £ 1,100 each to make its way of the northernmost Japan To the idyllic Indonesian island of Lombok.
Since winning the show and the £ 20,000 prize pool, Alfie has made it his mission to visit every country – and with 78 out of 195 he has reduced a small budget.
And now, in an exclusive interview with MailOnline, he has unveiled his best hacks to save money while traveling – as well as the biggest mistakes he and Owen made on race around the world.
The first tip from Alfie is to ensure that you do not trust your bank card or credit card when you are abroad – especially when you are outside of Europe.
“Exchange money while you’re at home and always wear cash,” says the maker of the travel content. “In the West we are quite used to that everything is card, but that is not the case in many countries – actually as soon as you come from Europe – and ATMs, abroad, will your fleece.”
Alfie also recommends comparing the total price of vacations against each other, instead of just the price of flights and accommodation.
He explains: ‘You will find that it is sometimes better to go for a long time.

‘Of course, flights to Thailand are £ 600-700, while Spain can sometimes be around £ 300, but if you look at the price of accommodation in Thailand, it can be £ 20 per night for luxury, and you can get meals for £ 2.
‘Owen and I spent less in Brazil, all -in, than a week in Mallorca – although our flights were 750 pounds.
“The money can rise quickly if you go to Spain in high season.”
Alfie has now become an experienced traveler since he participated in race around the world that he and Owen could have saved so much money in so many different places’ if they did the journey again,
He says: ‘I hate negotiating on street markets because you negotiate three or four dollars, which means nothing for us, but a lot for them.
‘But on race all over the world, negotiation is essential, and I just don’t think we got good enough. I also don’t think we’ve watched enough. I don’t think we have received worthless accommodations. I don’t think we’ve done enough hostels.
‘We could have saved money by sacrificing a little comfort.
“Traveling can be very easy and cheap, but we who have that inexperience at the time is what the show makes.”

Alfie recently revealed his favorite countries of those he visited – as well as his most overrated country.
When it comes to his favorites, Alfie has two – Jordan and Malaysia.
He said: ‘I took my Nan to Petra because she wanted to see it all her life, so that was really nice, and the whole feeling around the journey was just very positive.
‘The people in Jordan are also so friendly.
‘And Malaysia is also a favorite, because it is just a cheap paradise.
‘But my only favorite place in the world must be Angel Falls in Venezuela.
“They are the highest waterfall in the world, but they are completely from the grid and a nightmare to reach.”
