American couple try a Toby Carvery for the first time – and call it 'more classic' than American all-you-can-eat restaurants and their £9 meal 'quite tasty' (but they do have problems with the beef…)

“If you knock on it, I want to know why.”

So say American tourists Cara Atwell and Jeremy Davis as they film their first ever trip to a Toby Carvery to try a Sunday Roast, which they describe as 'quite tasty'.

The couple does everything they can to reach the 'house of the roast'. They take the train with their dog Carly from Ashford, where they were staying, and then the bus.

After a mile's walk, they finally reach the eatery in Westwood Cross, Ramsgate – and are pleasantly surprised by how 'posh' it is.

In the video, the pair claim upon entering that Toby Carvery is 'a much more stylish experience' than the all-you-can-eat US 'equivalent' Golden Corral.

Cara says: 'The interior is very elevated than I expected. People talk about Toby Carvery as the cheap version of a Sunday roast, but it's very stylish inside.'

At the carvery, the couple opts for a 'little bit of everything', with pork, gammon, turkey and beef on their plate. They then move on to the self-serve side and add cauliflower cheese, macaroni and cheese, peas, potatoes, carrots, onion filling and of course Yorkshire pudding.

They are especially impressed by the potato options.

Cara says, “There's potatoes with some kind of sauce, there's mashed potatoes, there's every kind of potato you could want.”

The pair choose to sit on a table outside and continue with their assessment of the £9 meal.

Jeremy describes the beef as 'tender' and the mash as 'smooth and buttery'.

As he digs into the macaroni cheese, Jeremy calls it “pretty good,” despite it tasting “processed.” Cara adds, “This mac and cheese tastes like one of our famous processed cheeses, Velveeta. It is well.'

After trying Carvery's Yorkshire puddings, they agree: 'There is no bad Yorkshire pudding.'

But they are most impressed by the gravy. Cara says: 'This is really tasty and I can see why Toby's calls their gravy famous. I feel like it's shining on my Yorkshire pudding.'

Carly the dog also agrees and is filmed licking her lips after trying a gravy-covered carrot.

However, the couple is not satisfied with everything on their plate. Jeremy describes the turkey as 'dry' and the stuffing only as 'interesting looking'.

Cara adds, “I don't like beef. That's going to be a no from me. It's just too cool.'

But overall, the couple decides the meal is “pretty nice.”

Cara says: 'It's not the classiest experience you can have, but it's certainly nicer than I thought it would be and for the weekday price of £9 per person – what a deal.'

Jeremy adds: 'Would I prefer one in a fancier pub, like a gastro pub? Probably.

'But that would also be at least £5 more. It's not a bad deal.'

Looking back, did the couple generally feel that Toby Carvery excelled his American counterparts?

They told MailOnline Travel: 'Although US restaurants may have more choice in terms of items available, the overall quality of the food was better at Toby Carvery.'

How does the Toby Carvery offering compare to other Sunday roasts they've had in the UK?

They told us: 'We've had better Sunday roasts in independent pubs and restaurants. We also had some more interesting sides in some smaller places. We had a Stilton fritter, which was delicious.'

Would they go again?

They said, 'We would like to try their breakfast. We were also told that we were missing some sauces and that you can also get special drinks there, so we would like to come back and try it again.'
