And XLoader appears to be stealing users’ data by disguising itself as Google Chrome, experts say.

This malicious software has so far been detected in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

HOW DOES THE MALWARE WORK?

NewsBytes reported that the malware is spread via text messages.

The texts contain a shortened URL link that, when clicked, installs the malware on the user’s device.

Once users allow the malware to access their phones, it can steal photos, messages, contacts and IMEI numbers.

Fortunately, Android devices with Google Play Protect is protected against this type of malware.

Play Protect should be enabled by default, but in case you don’t have it, here’s how to get it.

The app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store if it does not automatically download to your device.
