Belconnen, ACT: Driver ‘caught with blood alcohol reading so high it was near fatal’

An ACT driver has reportedly recorded a ‘near fatal’ blood alcohol level of almost nine times the legal limit.
The 36-year-old man was stopped at around 2am on Saturday evening while driving erratically in a Toyota Corolla in Strathnairn, Belconnen.
During a breath test by the police, the man breathed a blood alcohol level of 0.443.

A statement from ACT Police said it was “one of the highest readings” in the jurisdiction, with a high blood alcohol concentration considered limits above 0.15. The legal limit is 0.05.
The man was immediately given a 90-day suspension and will appear in court at a later date.
A statement from ACT Police urged people not to drink and drive.
“ACT Policing reminds all motorists that poor driving is one of the ‘fatal five’ causes of death on our roads,” the report said.
“If you’re going to drink, please don’t drive.”
Five people have died on ACT roads so far this year.
The most recent fatality occurred on May 23, after a 55-year-old motorcyclist collided with a car on Athllon Dr, Wanniassa.
The Torrens man died in hospital two days later, on May 25.
