Britain is a nation of nosy snoops, with an astonishing one-third admitting to spying on their neighbors.

A new poll shows that Brits are so determined to keep up appearances that they regularly check on their neighbors.

The research, conducted by leading electronics and appliances brand Hisense, found that as many as four million hasty purchases were made as a result.

Some even admitted to spending more than £10,000 on household items simply to keep up with the Joneses.

The Hisense investigation revealed the Covid pandemic has brought neighbors closer together.

But it also made the country even more curious than before – with neighboring countries determined not to be left behind.

The research shows that two-thirds of British households (65 percent) consider it important to keep up appearances.

And mowing the lawn (14 percent), traveling to the same destination (12 percent) and buying a new car (10 percent) topped the charts.

There was a regional breakdown Manchester voted the most nosy city – with 63 percent of Mancunians admitting to spying.

Sheffield (53 percent) came second Newcastle (53 percent) completed the top three.

London came in fourth, with 52 percent admitting to having their street spied on.

Consumer psychologist Dr Cathrine Jansson-Boyd said: ‘Of course people compare themselves to others, especially those close to them.

“Therefore, they tend to keep a close eye on the people around them: what they wear, what gadgets they have, and even what changes they make to their home.

“When others have something that is particularly attractive, that they do not have or that is better than what they have, there is a ‘wanting’ to get the same or something better.

‘If they don’t, they can feel second-class. It’s like an unconscious game of keeping up with the Joneses.”

She added: ‘At a time when finances are tough for people, this can wreak havoc on your wallet.

“So the key is to shop with your head. Stylish-looking items that might make the neighbor green with envy don’t have to be the most expensive.”

Arun Bhatoye, head of marketing at Hisense UK, said: “We’ve all been guilty of looking at what the neighbors are planning or buying – whether it’s a new car they’ve just opted for, or we’ I stopped by and saw their latest piece of technology.

‘Those subtle boasts or new purchases are sure to be the talk of the town, and it’s important that people don’t get carried away and spend a fortune on things they don’t need.

“It is important that people ensure that they make smart choices and get the best out of themselves money – less can simply be more.”
