Another nail in reality TV’s coffin? Popular series AXED by Seven – but it could be saved by rival network

SAS Australia will not return to screens in 2024.

Despite Channel Seven announcing the continuation of the series earlier this year, Daily Mail Australia can reveal that a fifth season has not yet been commissioned.

The previous season, filmed in the rugged landscape of Jordan, followed the show’s tradition of challenging locations including the Snowy Mountains, Capertee Valley and Blue Mountains in NSW.

Given the scale of production, a new season should generally be well advanced to hit screens before the end of the year.

Sources at Screentime, the production company behind SAS Australia, revealed that initial casting calls were taking place for the upcoming series.

However, negotiations between Channel Seven and Screentime broke down, leaving the show’s future uncertain.

According to a well-placed insider, rival network Channel Nine has since expressed an interest in commissioning the series for next year.

“Channel Nine has expressed interest in picking up the show before 2025,” the source added.

The decision to ax the show comes as a shock to many, especially given the strong performance of the 2023 finale, which attracted 1.85 million viewers across Australia and on Seven’s streaming apps.

The show’s popularity and loyal fan base make its cancellation all the more unexpected.

SAS instructor and presenter Ant Middleton then returns to screens for Seven’s Dancing with the Stars.

Clearly, Middleton surprised many with his competitive spirit in the dance competition, adding another layer to his dynamic television persona.

Channel Seven has been contacted for comment.
