A farm worker has died after being crushed by hay bales on an Australian farm when he was crushed by a hay bale.

Paramedics were called to a property on Long Gully Road, Greendale, an hour west of Melbourne, around 4pm to treat a man, 64, injured on the job.

It is clear that he was badly injured after bales of hay, which can weigh up to 700 kg, fell on him.

He later died as a result of the injuries he sustained in the freak accident.

Victorian police remain at the scene, although the man’s death is not considered suspicious, 9News reported.

Farmers and farm workers are consistently ranked in the top 10 most dangerous types of work in Australia.

The police are now preparing a report for the coroner.
