The pair are said to have escaped after the terrifying incident at around 12.30pm local time in a getaway vehicle described as a high-powered motorcycle.

A spokesperson for Spain“Fortunately, no one was injured,” the National Police said.

The location in chic Puerto Banus, near Marbella, is popular with British tourists.

Photos from the scene show glass everywhere on the floor of the eatery.

Part of one of the windows has been completely destroyed.

The establishment was reportedly hit by at least five bullets.

One worker said: “It was quite terrifying. It’s a miracle no one was hurt.”

But a well-placed source said La Sala had been hit by stray bullets fired at the roundabout outside the site.

The insider said: “La Sala was not the target.”

A spokesperson for La Sala said: “We are open every day from 10am and were open then but are closed for the time being due to the incident.

“We’re not sure yet if we’ll open tonight.”

Visitors to the restaurant over the years have included Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Erling Harland, Jurgen Klopp and Harry Maguire.

La Sala opened in 2010 and claims on its website that it is the only restaurant in the municipality of Marbella, which includes Puerto Banus, that offers live music, singers and DJs all day seven days a week and on Sundays.

The website adds: “Whether launching the latest Bentley or welcoming Jamie Oliver for dinner, La Sala is now gaining global recognition.

It is a flagship location of Sala Group Holdings, whose chairman Ian Radford worked as a squash professional after moving to Marbella before setting up a sports travel company.

Former midfielder David Bentley, once branded ‘the next David Beckham’, retired from football to focus on La Sala and remains a shareholder in the Sala group which owns bars and restaurants in Spain and Gibraltar.

He admitted to The Athletic in 2020 that he could have continued playing football and made more money, but he didn’t.

Bentley said: ‘I have more money than when I started. If I have $100, that’s fine.

“I loved football, but then it took its course.”
