THIS is the horrific moment a car exploded after being hit by a drunk driver on a busy highway.

Nilen Chauhan, 27, was behind the wheel of one Volkswagen Polo when he crashed into the rear of a Mitsubishi L200 and overturned the other vehicle on the A14 at Bar Hill in Cambridgeshire.

The driver survived the collision and was able to walk away.

“I was normal the driving in a straight line and the last minute…I can just see it,” he said.

“I was completely upside down and my head was scraping the floor.”

The crash was also captured on a dashcam in the cab of a truck driver, who cursed and exclaimed, “Jesus Christ! Oh my God!”.

In the dashcam footage, a loud bang is heard and the Mitsubishi is seen rolling on its roof along the highway and then skidding, billowing smoke and a stream of bright orange sparks.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, whose head was covered in blood, managed to walk away from the collision, which happened around 6.35am on September 14 last year.

At Cambridge Crown Court Chauhan admitted drink driving and dangerous driving in a vehicle, Cambridgeshire Police said.

Police said the defendant was from Ilford, in the east Londonwas sentenced to 16 months in prison by the same court on February 26 jail sentence, suspended for two years.

He was also banned from driving for three years and ordered to perform 150 hours of unpaid work.

After the ban, Chauhan will also have to take an extended driving test.

Witnesses said they saw Chauhan weaving between lanes and cutting other vehicles at speeds of “well over 100 miles per hour” before the crash.

Police said several empty beer bottles and a bottle whiskey were found in Chauhan’s car.

He was breath tested at the roadside and registered 104 micrograms alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath, above the legal limit of 35 micrograms of alcohol.

PC. Ben Patten said: ‘Chauhan’s driving was honestly one of the worst we’ve ever seen.

“This was not a momentary lapse in concentration or an honest mistake, it was a prolonged period of speeding, tailgating and vehicular activity while over the drink-drive limit.

“The victim who was hit by Chauhan suffered extensive physical and mental injuries and it is a wonder that neither he nor any other innocent member of the public can go about their daily activities. company was not more seriously or worse injured.

“This type of driving not only affects the lives of those directly involved, but also has a ripple effect on the families of the victims, as well as on local communities and the NHS.”
