Here we explain how much it currently costs to use one, and how this will change from April.

How much do I pay to run my dishwasher?

Research by the Energy Saving Trust has previously shown that dishwashers contribute 8% to the total electricity bill.

But your running costs depend on which model it is and, more importantly, on its wattage.

Price comparison site Uswitch told The Sun that under Ofgem’s current price cap, a 1.6 kWh model costs around 46 cents per cycle.

This will drop to 39 cents for each cycle from April 1, when the new price cap comes into effect.

Is it cheaper to wash by hand?

You might not think it, but a modern dishwasher often uses less water than washing dishes by hand, saving you time and helping the environment.

Research by Compare The Market has shown that one wash of dishes costs the same amount of energy and water as turning on the hot water tap for six to nine minutes or filling four to six washing up bowls.

On average, washing dishes by hand uses four times as much hot water as putting the same number of dishes in the dishwasher.

What is the energy price ceiling?

However, always remember to maximize the efficiency of your dishwasher by making sure it is full before you turn it on.

Help you can get with your energy bill

You can apply for help through the Household Support Fund, which will now close six months later than planned after the government announced its extension in the spring budget.

If you work at British Gas and have a smart meter, you may also be able to take part in the energy company’s ‘PeakSave’ scheme.

It offers a 50% discount on electricity on Sundays between 11am and 4pm until the end of the month.

In the meantime, you may be able to receive free home insulation or have other energy-saving measures installed in your home through the Energy Company Obligation.

The scheme is designed to help low-income households with certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, Child Benefit and Housing Benefit.

The Government previously told The Sun that households eligible for the scheme would save around £600 to £700 on their bills each year after energy saving measures were put in place.

More information about the scheme can be found on the government website.
